GM's Thread About Everything/GM's Thread About Nothing (14 Viewers)

Tough weekend in Minnesota got even tougher late Saturday night, as an acquaintance of my son died in a car accident. 19 years old. Like my son, he was adopted from Guatemala. I coached the kid in little league baseball, the whole bit. Knew the family pretty well. They lived right around the corner from us.

Just awful. Rumors are they were racing or some nonsense. Kids that age are dumb, just like we all were. So gut-wrenching to have it cost him his life. Can't imagine the parents.

Funeral is going to be just brutal obviously.

They can be gone in a blink.

Horrible. Very sorry.

I can't explain how much I absolutely despite the eye doctor.

Up until recently, I had only gone twice in my entire life. I've been having sties (absolutely horrible) on my eyelids, and during a routine check the doctor found an abnormality on my retina that he wants to keep an eye on (pun intended).

The effing machines they use to check everything out drive my eyes batcrap crazy. I just can't do it.... or it takes me 3 times longer to do the scans cuz I blink and my eyes tear up so badly.

I have never been great with eyedrops. I remember my dad had to hold me down when I was a wee tyke and had an eye infection for my mom to get drops in my eye.

Contacts? LOL, that is a hard pass.
went yesterday for the 2nd time in my life and I'm almost 60.

Went from 20-15 all my life to needing 125 readers about 4 years ago. No issues w/ distance.

Tired of the readers for work, and while night driving I've noticed that the head lights were looking more like concert lights...........so I decided to go for a check up. I guess there is a new way to check your eyes w/o having to dilate them, so I chose that. After she gets done w/ the exam she tells me that my eyes are not that bad and that I've got no major issues. She can put me in contacts and/or glasses. I say "let's try the contacts" as I see my sister, niece, and co-workers all swear by them now. So they bring them in and put them in my eyes...........WOW what have I been missing?????? Now the fun part starts as I've got to take them out and put them in 3X in 60 minutes and then watch an educational video. In my head I'm like, we are good to go. NOPE. I get 1 out immediately. Left eye not so much. After digging around for 5-6 minutes she puts some dye in my eye to find the contact.........it's on the top of my eye under my eyelid (explains why I couldn't get it out). So I get a pass on that. I then put them both in with no trouble, and I immediately get the right one out. Never got the left one out as the same thing happened.

I said, let's go get the glasses.

Picked out a pair, and got all the bells and whistles.................insurance paid for 75% of everything, so that is good I guess.

Left eye not so much. After digging around for 5-6 minutes she puts some dye in my eye to find the contact.........it's on the top of my eye under my eyelid (explains why I couldn't get it out).

This seems odd. Maybe they didn't size your eye correctly.

Same thing happened to me when I tried contacts a couple of decades ago. Probably some combination of sensitive eyeballs, and lack of resilience and intestinal fortitude.
Similarly, when I got cataract surgery, I was chided by the surgeon for jerking around when he perform the procedure. Uh, excuse me, but you doped me up and then stuck a knife in my eye and its my fault I flinched?

It dumbfounds me that the how to get to heaven thread is allowed here. Pet peeve I guess.

Understood. It's been a challenge on how to best allow discussions on religion. I"m not at all sure we're doing it the right way.
It s fairly identical to today’s politics. My way or the highway and you’re an idiot if you’re not on my highway.

I avoid it for the most part. Dipped my toe in today. Gross. And that’s on me, I opened the thread. Carry on.

If you ignore the person who started the thread it disappears forever from your life. That way, you lose a pet peeve and the folks who like the thread can carry on.

Totally. But the quoted bits make it hard to follow along. I think I’ve opened that thread 3-4 times. Not my cup of tea. I’ve only blocked 1 or 2 people in the 89 years I’ve been on here.

No, I mean if you put Paddington Bear (thread starter) on your ignore, the entire thread vanishes from your message board. Gone. Like Geyser Solzey.

Thanks. I'm a big believer in saving the aggravation. For the thread, it's mostly non religous people though that are discussing. It can absolutely (and has) gone of the rails at times and maybe it truly is like politics and we're not able to discuss. We'll see.

There are EIGHT seasonal Super Foods that pop in the summertime. They are:

Watermelon
Blueberries
Tomatoes
Kale
Strawberries
Peppers
Zucchini
Cherries

What's your Mount Rushmore of Summertime Super Foods?

GM - Watermelon, Blueberries, Kale, Peppers

Just missing the cut - Strawberries
Overrated - Zucchini

In case you need a definition of a super food (or think corn is one):

Thanks to the season's bountiful harvest, summer is the ideal time to load up on superfoods, many of which are at their most delicious this time of year. “Superfoods” are generally considered to be those that are rich in antioxidants, fiber, fatty acids or other compounds that are beneficial to your health.

So grab your tote and head to the farmer's market. It's time to load up on our favorite summertime superfoods while they’re at the height of their availability and flavor.

Rushmore: 🍅 🍓 🫑 🍒

overrated: 🍉

Careful on those cherries...

Yes, there is a historical account that President Zachary Taylor died after consuming cherries and iced milk on a hot day. This incident occurred on July 4, 1850, while he was attending a ceremony at the Washington Monument. He became ill shortly after and died five days later, on July 9th. While the exact cause of death is still debated, some historians believe it was related to gastroenteritis caused by the cherries and milk, or possibly food poisoning or even cholera.

Love all of these except not really a fan of kale. Try putting zucchini and onions sprinkled with Italian seasoning in an air fryer.
My favorite : blueberries
I am getting some great home grown tomatoes now.

Anyone who drinks milk while eating cherries deserves what they get.

Watercress is the answer

You guys are nuts. Kale is delicious. I put it on my pizzas. So good. Kale salad, kale chips...
sautéed with spinach and garlic, or air fried is best
and dried cranberries

YEAH! Those go into the kale salad my wife makes and I'm a fan!

I also like it when I add the big bunches of kale to my West African peanut stew and I watch it shrink down in the heat immediately. Makes me feel like a mad scientist and in fact, I think I've even said "MOOOOO HAAAAA HAAAA HAAAAA" when it happens.

mmm, Liberian peanut soup. My ex is from there and her cooking along with the general cuisine of the country is exquisite. Do you make fufu with that or do you eat it with rice?

I serve it over rice. My wife is a vegan and makes a ton of tofu, so this is something I like to make that we both really enjoy absent tofu. Trader Joes makes a terrific natural peanut butter that's ideal for this recipe. I've made it a ton of times now - I follow this recipe. She's got some really good stuff for the plant based folks. Lots of flavor!

That recipe looks outstanding, gonna try that. When I mentioned fufu I am talking about the West African side starch here: https://cheflolaskitchen.com/fufu-recipe-how-to-make-fufu/
Scroll down a bit and you'll see what it looks like when done. I use a mix like this one as it is just add water, heat, stir and then use hands to form. Takes some practice to get the right water/mix ratio by sight but worth it imo. Comes in either cocoyam, cassava root or plantain, I prefer plantain.

No kidding? Ha! I've used a few of her recipes as I attempt to find vegan recipes I'll enjoy making as much as I enjoy eating. I love all the spices she uses along with her layered approach to cooking her dishes. Very cool you got to hear her speak.

Ahhhh, my apologies. I read that as "tofu" and am reminded it's been 4 years since I had an eye exam. :bag:

If I encounter fried plantains on a menu, it's an insta-order for me. Good stuff! Thanks for clarifying.
