GM's thread about nothing (103 Viewers)

SF seems like a bit of a no-brainer but I recall K4 looking for someplace with a lower cost of living so she could save up enough to buy a Galapagos island to retire too.
Lots of nice places in Berkeley/Oakland Hills/Piedmont too (if one's working in SF, this doesn't work as well if you're on the peninsula). I think you can get around a lot of the cost if you live outside the city, just as you could do the same in NYC or Chicago I'm sure.
San Mateo Highlands if you got the scratch and you're into suburban isolation.
Burlingliname has some very cool areas, Berkely is good and those two or easily commutable. Santa Cruz is pretty far, but a great place. Lots of really good areas with 60 miles (up 4 hour drive).

Well now Krista is making me blush. One interesting thing for me about the weekend was that there were several unique styles of good time party drunks there, but everyone got along pretty darn well. I think Guster would be at the top of my list of guys to get hammered with in the future, though it would likely cause my wife to get very angry.
I really have to meet this Angry Wife. I've been fascinated by this for years.
The lack of an Angry Wife cameo was the biggest (perhaps only) coshole disappointment tbh.
I was hoping she would storm in, grab him by the ear and lead him off the premises.

She's going to have to commute to Silicon Valley/SF. Don't think Santa Cruz is going to work.

And it's the vampire capital of the world.

Maggots, Krista. You're eating maggots. How do they taste?

Santa Cruz would work well if K4 had a requirement to live really close to a roller coaster.

You are a gentleman and a scholar.

Krista, listen, I gotta tell you something - it's real important. Shh! Santa Carla is crawling with vampires.
The most disturbing thing about that movie was Corey Haim's wardrobe.Exhibit A

Exhibit B

And what was the deal with him in the bath tub? Wasn't he supposed to be about 13 or 14?

 I loved this movie growing up and it still has a spot in my heart. I generally watch it every time it's on.

It's a style radically ahead of his time. You just don't see many teenagers dressed like 50something men rocking a hard mid-life crisis.

:goodposting: There was a dying movie theater that showed movies for a buck and Lost Boys was there for like two months. Me and my degenerate friends would ride our bikes there every couple of days, sneak some beers in and smoke cigarettes like they were gonna stop making them. Good times.

Sometimes I feel like I teach in a gigantic Family Cirucs panel. We're doing a section on immigration (the good wave of immigration..Irish and Germans. Not the one with all the filthy Eyetalians and Polacks.).The last question on the worksheet we're doing asks if they know where their ancestors came from. If they don't know they need to ask their parents tonight. Some of the answers I've gotten:"Irish and white and European...""Mexico, Maya, Hispanic, Spain"This one is my favorite so far: "Mexico, Latina, and 1/3 African American".

Your shtick is rubbing off on them. Serves you right.

I wish that was it.

Anyone think a trip to Mexico is safe?

Some friends are heading down there for a guys trip. There is supposed to be good diving and fishing there. I'm more interested in just spending a few days on the beach with some mexican beers. The location is supposed to be a town south of Cancun.

Wondering if any of the GMTANers have been lately?

Akumal Mexico

Ummm, this was on the Pacific Coast, but I don't think Mexico, is all that safe if you venture off of the big resorts

Akumal is beautiful. Did some snorkeling there this past May. No problems whatsoever. Haven't heard of any real trouble in the resort areas near Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Riviera Maya. Draft with confidence.

It's like fricken downtown Memphis up in there.

Agreed. Been a couple of years for me, but there are police and military everywhere. All of the problems I've heard of were in the north and west. The Mexican government will do anything they can to keep the Riviera Maya safe.
