GM's thread about nothing (55 Viewers)

Akumal is beautiful. Did some snorkeling there this past May. No problems whatsoever. Haven't heard of any real trouble in the resort areas near Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Riviera Maya. Draft with confidence.
Agreed. Been a couple of years for me, but there are police and military everywhere. All of the problems I've heard of were in the north and west. The Mexican government will do anything they can to keep the Riviera Maya safe.
:goodposting:Cozumel seemed the same as always when I was there briefly last month. Headed to Cancun for a wedding (not mine) in two weeks. Not worried.

Thorn & Homer - looks like y'all better batten down the hatches for the Nor'easter coming.
Love the accuracy of these things. One foot of snow, or more, locally up to two feet. Margin of error 100%, or more. :loco:
You're Irish, so having plenty of booze isn't a problem. Do y'all use toilet paper or milk? If not, depth-of-snow won't matter.STAY STRONG
Wait. Thorn is a good-looking Irish lawyer with killer dance moves, smooth with the ladies and dashing good looks? I have a brother!?!?!!!!

Well yeah. I got to see the sun for five days, OF COURSE there's gonna be a ####ing blizzard up here.
Not quite as bad, but landing at Dulles on the way back and we had to disembark down stairs instead of a jetway. Skylady: "Watch out for ice"Me: "Thanks"[methinking: "kiss my ###; you're going back to warm"]

Sometimes I feel like I teach in a gigantic Family Cirucs panel. We're doing a section on immigration (the good wave of immigration..Irish and Germans. Not the one with all the filthy Eyetalians and Polacks.).The last question on the worksheet we're doing asks if they know where their ancestors came from. If they don't know they need to ask their parents tonight. Some of the answers I've gotten:"Irish and white and European...""Mexico, Maya, Hispanic, Spain"This one is my favorite so far: "Mexico, Latina, and 1/3 African American".
New close favorite "Porchigeeese".

I don't like any place conservative.

I don't like any place religious.

I don't like any place with low IQs,

or bad drivers,

or people who have never lived anywhere else in their ####### lives,

or who like chain restaurants

or monster trucks.
Hey! I'm 7 for 7 here!
I forgot to add I don't like any place that is Bakersfield.
SF seems like a bit of a no-brainer but I recall K4 looking for someplace with a lower cost of living so she could save up enough to buy a Galapagos island to retire to

If I could live anywhere, I'd probably go with San Fran or Vancouver or Hawaii. Seattle and Portland both pretty high on my list too though.
:goodposting: on the cost of living. The only thing that would hold me back from SF.

Lots of nice places in Berkeley/Oakland Hills/Piedmont too (if one's working in SF, this doesn't work as well if you're on the peninsula). I think you can get around a lot of the cost if you live outside the city, just as you could do the same in NYC or Chicago I'm sure.
 Do you know who the hell you're talking to?

Honestly not trying to be snarky in the least bit, but (short of the chain restaurants obviously) does Nicaragua fit that mold exactly?
No, you make a valid point. It would fail on the religion and people who've never lived anywhere else, but I should have clarified that I just meant the fundamentalist religious zealots. I'm cool with Catholics. And as for never having lived anywhere else, that's a function of poverty and border control, not lack of curiosity.

Pittsburgh is a cool city, except for traffic and lack of good public transportationPlus mr. Krista likes the steelers

I don't like any place conservative. 5/5 - like Austin, Louisiana is conservative, but New Orleans isn't at all.

I don't like any place religious. 4/5 - b/c of heavy French & Spanish influence and large African American population, I would bank that most of the city "claims a religion"...but mostly Catholics (functioning alcoholics) and none of the bible belt BS that is often associated with the south

I don't like any place with low IQs. 3/5 - there is still a large part of the population that is poor and uneducated...however we've made great strides since Katrina...fastest growing city link (forbes)...have been getting great pub on all young professional and entreprenurship fronts over the past few years

bad drivers. 5/5 - part of this is b/c cost of living is cheap relative to being in a city with lots to do...but if you live close to the action, you never have to really mess with a lot of traffic at all

people who have never lived anywhere else in their ####### lives. 3/5 - see low IQs answer. Not perfect, but vastly improving

or who like chain restaurants or monster trucks. 5/5. I think the city of New Orleans doesn't even allow chain restaurants. Drew Brees had to pull all sorts of strings to get a Jimmy Johns franchise near the Tulane campus.
New Orleans - see above for rankings out of 5. :homer:
Still in my top five.
Denver would be high on the relocation list, I'd think. As a bonus, you get better weather than most people seem to think Denver gets.
High on my list; not as high on Mr. krista's for some reason.
I'll make a weak entry for Ithaca.
I wouldn't reject it out of hand if there were a good job there.
My house is on the market as of today. It's sickly fascinating to see how my home is marketed. I understand this is what I wish to do and it's part of the process, but giving up one's home to strangers is always surprisingly wrenching. :(
Did you land a new job?
I have a couple of offers so far and have been too busy to do any serious looking. Still have a few in the works from when I launched this search. But in any case I want to sell the house so that I have maximum flexibility (assuming a new employer won't buy the house as my company did when I moved here).

I don't know about dashing good looks. More like light-jogging good looks.

I'd like to hear more about this "I don't like people who have never lived anywhere else in their farging lives" requirement.Does the whole city have to have lived somewhere else? How far away is enough? Is it state lines or mileage? Would you still like them if they leave and come back? If so, how long do they need to leave for?Nicaragua gets a pass because they're all poor, but apparently very curious. Anyone else get a pass?

Maggots, Krista. You're eating maggots. How do they taste?

Santa Cruz would work well if K4 had a requirement to live really close to a roller coaster.
Add this to the list. Love roller coasters.

Santa Cruz is a hippie-infested dump. I don't think I'd live there for free.
I have a peculiar affection toward hippies, but I won't make hippie infestation a requirement.

It was really just shorthand for not being in a place that's too provincial or full of people without intellectual curiosity. I have good friends who've never lived outside the general area of their hometowns but are aware that other places exist. I will choose my words more carefully in the future. :)
 Do you know who the hell you're talking to?
Berkeley/nice Oakland are relatively inexpensive.
 Maybe I should look at this more seriously.
I'm a fan of both New Orleans and Pittsburgh, for what it's worth.

No video of the dancing?
:goodposting: Or Thorn and me singing to each other at the bar using bananas as microphones? I do know that Thorn was wearing Mrs. SLB's sunglasses.

Before you can live somewhere you have to have live at least 3 other places. Duh.

Krista, you'd be surprised at the overall coolness of Columbus Ohio. Fits your criteria to a T, plus lots of corporate HQ's there. Now that I think about it, it's a little like Austin North...Liberal city surrounded by Rush Limbaugh country, college town, state capital, mostly transplants, young professionals everywhere, etc.

Does not compute. Now excuse me...I've got a tractor pull to go to.

What's teh intellectual curiousity index there?
