GM's thread about nothing (22 Viewers)

job

Got my offer from Dell. Can't take it I don't think. I need a job but even hitting the sales plan on target I still would barely pay my bills. I would be counting on blowing out my number and making some bonus bucks (which I am confident in doing) but I'm not technically eligible until after my 2nd quarter, so that's 6 months away.

Have a phone interview with a smaller company on Monday and the software company I've been going back and forth with is supposed to be crunching number today (although it's getting a little late to hear from them).

Kind of kicking myself because I had two or three interviews a month ago that paid higher but were much further away so I wasn't as aggressive about them figuring a job at Dell that paid right was a layup. Turns out NOBODY gets hired in to Dell from outside at the number I was expecting, which I have only learned in the last week or so.
Sorry, dude.

My five year old (on the 18th) little girl just wandered out of her bedroom so tired that she couldn't find the bathroom. It made up up Tbone from the weekend to a month. Do we know who that dude is over here?

Funny, I've been meaning to update it. Should probably call my lawyer Monday.

I didn't get on my walk today until very late. Depressing day, cold, cloudy. As I'm walking I get a very serious call from somebody about some potentially life changing stuff and the conversation lasted over two miles. By the time we hang up, I was on the nature trail. It's not exactly in the middle of nowhere but it was in the woods. Right then a squirrel runs across the path about 20 yards in front of me. Except this wasn't any ordinary squirrel. It was brown in the face and body but it had a completely snow white tail. I mean this thing was so white if you compared it to GM you would think Forrest was one of those Nigerian marathon runners. It was really strange to say the least.

So is this a sign or something? I bought some Powerball tickets just in case.
It's not quite like seeing an 18-point buck, but whatever floats your boat, Hiawatha.
I've never seen anything like it.
What's it cost to update a will? Mine was $800 after my divorce and I don't have another $800 to spend updating after remarriage and another kid. *OLD UNSURE ICON - SCREW YOU FBG FOR NOT CHANGING IT*
http://www.legalshield.com/corp/Low monthly fee. Will is included. I don't recall, but I don't think there's a contract, so you should be able to do your Will and then cancel if you want.

I'm no lawyer, but I think you risk being incarcerated if you go from the Grand Canyon to CA without stopping in Vegas. Pretty sure I read or heard that somewhere.

Is this any different from legalzoom.com where you can get a will for like $80 total?

Yeah. You get to actually talk to and work with a lawyer. And I think it's only like $20/mo, so if you cancel after a couple of mos, it would be cheaper, too.Read the details, fine print, etc. I'm no expert and it has been a few years.

I honestly think you people fear change. The new board is not difficult to figure out. Different, yes. Worse than Tbone, no.
We're up to 2 months now.
Is there at least a FAQ somewhere so I can flip to it and figure some of these things out quickly without having to spend time figuring out or asking? I've been stuck in quotes and can't get out. What's the trick? TAB? Double Click? Nothing worked.

Was the link/text thing supposed to be intuitive to all? What was wrong with inserting the link and having an option below to type the text? How was I supposed to know that the new way was to type the text, highlight it and then hit the link button. How is that better? How is that obvious? Where did the subtitles go? Why can't I see the names of people who started threads without squinting? Why is that better?

Has it really been two months? I dunno....I'm with Bentley. I'm made to feel stupid because I can't just figure these things out on my own. Sucks. You get used to something for 10 years and then get mocked because you can't figure out the new system and don't have time to sort it out on your own. A FAQ would have been appreciated.

End Rant, tl;dr (they do that at Shaggybevo, which is where I think I'm taking my talents)

Rude, you can delete my account now. Make me General Malaise guest or whatever Scupper did.

Finally watching season premier of Mad Men...PV says it'll be a snoozer according to the interwebs.
Think I'm going to fire up season two of the ol' Wires this weekend. Think a one-week break was enough for me to regroup emotionally.
Where can you and I go to talk about it? I hate that you're about to lap me, but I'm about 1/3 of the way done with Season 2 and while a little different, it is no less of an asssssssssssssss kicker. TIGER DO NOT READ
How did you deal with Wallace? My wife was emotionally wrecked. I've never in my life seen her react that way to a TV show. Only once in real life have I seen her recoil in horror like that. She loved Wallace. :(
That was gut wrenching. The fact that it made me hurt to see it happen just goes to show how awesome the show is and how it pulls you into the story. As I mentioned before, I started watching "Always Sunny..." after finishing the Wires. Just watched the episode about pooping the bed. While totally different from Wires, I find myself wanting to be there trying to solve the mystery of whose poop it is.

Oh, I like it a lot. Hot Shots was an outstanding episode, very well done. By episode 4, everything falls into place and you're going to LOVE the direction it starts going. I just wish I had more time to watch 'em.
Nah. Savor them. You'll be sad when they're all done

GM, I'm here to help.

Is there at least a FAQ somewhere so I can flip to it and figure some of these things out quickly without having to spend time figuring out or asking?
There was a pinned thread called "Message board update clearinghouse thread" or some such. I'm not sure why it was unpinned but many questions and gripes were addressed there. I'm half in the bag so I will try to address your questions for the betterment of this thread.

I've been stuck in quotes and can't get out. What's the trick? TAB? Double Click? Nothing worked
Not sure what you mean here. If it's something I have encountered then your cursor is stuck at the bottom of some quotes. Hit enter twice to get out.

I don't think the lack of that option was ever explained. One could do it the "new" way on the "old" board. I posted links like that quite often. It kinda sucks but is it that bad?

Where did the subtitles go? Why can't I see the names of people who started threads without squinting? Why is that better?
I think MF said that most of the cosmetic changes were because the software writers were gearing towards mobile users. IIRC he said future versions will even be without "pages" and it will be similar to Facebook or other comment based pages where you would keep scrolling down instead of clicking "Next page".

Has it really been two months?
:lmao: No

Take my ball and go home shtick is very unbecoming of you.

One final trick if you're having problems with quotes. You can highlight and delete just like normal. But if you really want to see the [ quote]

then you can click the button on the top left that looks like a lightswitch.

I'm on a diet where I fast 2 days a week. I don't think it's working well with my PMS cycles.

Maybe, but I think it's time for a break. I get so frustrated over things that don't matter when I really need to be focusing on my job, which pays about as much as not having a job does. I spend too much time on here and the time I am spending on here is bringing out the worst in me. A timeout would do me some good.

You're a good man, Sam. You too, Thorn. You all are. Good ladies too. I'm going to try and get smarter, sharper, more even, less angry, better.

K4 - you WILL be doing Glacier in Montana, yes? Transcendent and I don't think I've ever used that word before. You gotta hit it. If you go to Maine and can get to Sebago,Lake stay at Migas Lodge. I might have an 'in' for you there. We own an island in the middle of the lake that's worth a day trip. Migas is spendy but well well well worth it. If you get a rain storm at night a more peaceful sleep you will never have anywhere else. Deep in the gorgeous woods with the rain tap dancing off the roof tops. Ahhhhhhh. If you're going to Vancouver, you might consider Whistler, even in the summer. A European Village with incredible peaks and no shortage of great restaurants and nightlife.
Adding Glacier. Thanks for the info. Will add Migas to east coast trip. I've been to Whistler and am not sure I want to be reminded of my disastrous attempt to snowboard there.

If GM quits, do we rename this thread?
YSRTAN, pronounced yeesertan?GM, maybe you don't realize that the new board has a much shorter "too many posts" trigger. That screen only pops up if you post again within three seconds, not the 10 or 15 it used to be. Isn't that glorious? Doesn't it make you wish to stay?

Not that the game is going to sell out or anythingWhat do you guys think?
:lmao: I would probably just roll the dice at the box office. If they are at even 20% capacity I'd be surprised. I really don't care which seats, but the $28 ones don't seem too bad. I spoke briefly with guru, and he might be in as well.
Are we talking Astros?what date? Seems like k4s employers should have tickets available. Or I can make a few calls. Sadly my inbev connection moved to Dallas.
Astros v Mariners on April 23rd. So far it seems like the consensus is walk up to the box office.
Man, I'd think we'd surely be able to get some mid-week Astro/Mariner tickets for free or well under face value. Count me in. HOw many tickets do we need? I'll make some calls.

I really suck at following GM's financial advice. Instead of letting my savings sweat I dipped into it to book my flight to Cincinnati. Looking forward to GusterDerbyHole '13.
We'll make it all back and more on my Superfecta wager this year.
*OLDUNSURE*I don't really know much about horse racing other than I always lose. I'm mostly just going to get really drunk and hopefully listen in on some Guster finger bangin'.Cincinnati has lots of hot women, right??
Remember how excited Thorn and I were by all the attractive ladies in Austin? That should tell you something. That said, there is some decent talent (my buddy from Maine who was in this week was impressed) and at the Derby, we'll likely hang out where all the college girls and fine ladies in their mid 20's hang out. Maybe we can pretend we have a lake house and bring some back

No one leaves Neverland. Even you.

I'm watching the new total recall and it is not good enough for me to overcome the "I've seen this before" thing. I'm really just hoping for the three breasted chick. Then I'm out...

You should probably go talk about a comprehensive estate plan. I don't gather that you have a huge number of assets so an attorney should be able to quote you a flat fee for an estate plan (including a living trust - which operates effectively the same as a will but avoids probate if you die, which is huge) and set you up. I'd figure you're looking at something in the $2000 range. More than you wanted to spend, yes, but also worth doing if you have assets, which you do.

I vaguely remember but don't know if it's the same guy.

Quick recap from my cornhole with Drifter:

We met up in the parking lot at his hotel by the airport around 9am and hopped in his rental to go meet with the trucking company that was hosting us for the day. On the drive down we worked on our back story (met through a mutual friend - Damon) and chatted and got to know each other a bit better. I had to make sure I was on top of my game all day - he's kind of a big deal with the company that we were with and I didn't want to out him for bringing along a buddy from the internet.

After a quick tour of the trucking company, we hopped in the trucking guys' SUV to head to Keeneland. While transitioning from Drifter's car to trucking guy's SUV, Drifter gave me the cigars he brought to hold. Trucking guy got excited and asked if Drifter and I liked Cubans. He ended up swinging by his home on our way to the track and picked some up for us to enjoy.

After a short drive and somewhat awkward conversation, we got to the track. Turns out one of the other customers the trucking guy had invited had brought her husband and he was short a ticket until the business guy from the company got there in a little bit. Since Drifter and I weren't in any big rush, we just chilled outside and started to drink while the other couple went up into the big room we had tables reserved in. It was a little after 11

Once we got up to the room, the business guy told us that it was Makers 46 day at the track, which meant while quantities lasted, you got to keep the wax dipped glass the drink came in. Like I needed more incentive to drink quickly. The company picked up our ticket, food and drink the whole time, so it was on. During this time, I was furiously emailing Forrest to figure out what the heck to do. I've never seriously bet on horses and while I could sorta read the betting sheets, I wasn't really sure how to figure out which horses to bet on and what bets to place. I had mentioned to trucking guy that I was trying to reach out to my friend for advice on the race and he kept checking in with me to see if I had any picks yet. Everyone loves a winner!!

I've gotta give GM huge props for his tips. He told me things to look for on the sheet and sent me the expert picks from the website. I basically used those two things to dominate. I cashed tickets on 7 out of 10 races and really shouldn't have played one race that I did just because I was up on the day. I mostly stuck to exacta boxes, but played a couple horses across the board. At one point one of the horses I had bet across the board was in dead last at the half way mark and he ended up winning the race. I contemplated doing this, but since we were with people Drifter does business with, I held back. All in all, I had a lot of bourbon, won some decent cash and had a great time. Thanks for bringing me along Drifter!!

After the race, trucking guy brought us back to Drifter's car and we raced back to the airport to get my car, make a quick stop at my place to drop my car off, get some chipotle and pick up my daughter to head up to poker night. Now Drifter knows where Oregonia is. Unfortunately, Shuke wasn't able to join, but Drifter got to see how a $20 buy in for a hold 'em tournament can last 4 hours...and that wasn't even the end of the game. Drifter got busted out early playing good cards that ran into great hands. I had some ebbs and flows and was top stack with 5 or 6 to go, but played face cards a little too aggressively (was trying to either win quickly or bust out quickly so we could get headed out.

Had a great time!! Thanks so much, GB. Hope you get to Buffalo Trace today
