GM's thread about nothing (26 Viewers)

I can't believe I spent three days in Phily and didn't have a cheesesteak. Pretty poor planning on my part. I did, however, have something called 'scrapple' for breakfast at this old diner and it was incredible.
Scrapple is great. Just don't ask how they make it.
I asked my friend Q, who grew up in Western Penn and spent time in Phily. He told me what it is and jimmy crack the corn and I don't care. Delicious. Absolutely the best thing I had on the trip. The other thing is I absolutely despise the taste of American Cheese. Or at least, I hate what I have been exposed to on the American Cheese front. However, Q told me that the American Cheese you get in Phily on the cheesesteaks is a completely different animal from the ******* version you find elsewhere. I'm still leery, though. I would think Arby's or Denny's would use the crap kind of American cheese that I loathe.

In before some goon from King of Prussia goes apecrap.
I don't know, can you? I realize that yesterday I hit up Jack in the Box and then Jimmy Johns (plus a six pack of PBR) but I have never really been an Arby's guy. Can you really get a Phily Cheesesteak from Denny's? That's where I would go at 3am for chicken fried steak and eggs back in my wilder days.
Those don't even really compare to a real Philly cheesesteak. In Philly they use a special roll (amoroso) and use actual ribeye steak to make the Philly. They also cook it differently. I've been to a few places that has come close (oddly a cheesesteak place in Bullhead City, AZ, of all plces would fly in the rolls daily from Philly) but nothing really compares. It's weird, but true.
There's a place on the northwest side of Tampa (Pinellas Co.) called Delco's which also has a location in Delaware County, PA. Amoroso rolls and all the rest. Fantastic cheesesteaks! A really good tastykake selection too.

Not going to go apecrap but I'm not sure how anyone could believe this to be true if they've actually had a good Cheesesteak. Worlds of difference. That's like saying, "Why bother with good pasta when you're in Italy? You can just go to Olive Garden!"

Exactly.

Looks like we've run out of topics and are circling back for some repeats in here.
We're trying to keep Shuke from leaving and talk of food and pics of comely women tend to do just that. Be a part of the solution, Tre.
Thanks for the pep talk, gb. Anyone ever prepare flank steak? I'm doing flank steak carne asada style and mexican rice and beans tonight for the GF's parents.I bought a nice 2.5lb flank steak at the butcher yesterday and got it in an orange juice/red wine vinegar/soy sauce marinade after applying this carne asada rub I got at the mercado.Sounds like I just grill this thing quick on super high heat to med-rare and then slice it into thing slices against the grain. Wa la.Flank steak btw is basically the stomach muscle of the cow. So, it's thin and tough, which is why the marinade is so important. It has a distinct flavor and odor as well. Skirt steak is similar but more towards teh diaphragm area I guess.
I've done many flank steaks for carne asada just the way your describe and they are tremendous. In addition to the juice/soy/vinegar, I've used tequilla in the marinade. The marindade helps tenderize the meat, so hopefully this thing is in the fridge marinating right now. Should be excellent. Assume charcoal, not gas?Make some cuban black beans to go with this....
Yep, charcoal all the way. And it is in the fridge and I do have tequila. I can call PV and have her put some in there.I was going to do black beans with some queso fresca I bought at the mercado. Anything special I need to do to make them "cuban black beans"?
As I've posted before (and I think Tiger's latched on to this) I mince 3-4 cloves of garlic (depending on how many cans of black beans I'm using), dice up onions and red peppers (de-seeded jalapenos or serranos if the boys aren't eating with us) and sautee them in olive oil for few minutes with Tony's and cracked black pepper tossed in for the hell of it. Then I dump in the beans, a LOT of cumin (1 to 1.5 TBSP), pinch of oregano, a little paprika, garlic powder, onion powder maybe some chili powder if I'm feeling bold and stir in about 1/3 to 1/2 a bottle/can of beer (any beer will work, though I like to use a Red Strip or something similar for no real good reason other than I associate it with "Cubans") maybe some more pepper and Tony's (Old Bay works too), toss in a fresh bay leaf, and bring to a boil on medium high heat. Once you hit that boil, turn it to low and let it simmer as long as you like. Cover it if you want more moisture and more flavors, uncover if you want it thicker. You can't really go wrong here.

I'm not a anti-chain restaurant snob by any means but when it comes to subs prefer local places over chains. Subway's bread is horrid. I only had Jersey Mike's a couple of times and was underwhelmed. Quizno's wasn't bad if it was something like a toasted meatball or beef n cheese.
Danny's Pizza & Hoagies in Bethel Park, PA beats all of those. Too bad it is 7 hours from here.
White House (or like "white horse") subs in Atlantic City is the best hoagie place ever.
Congrats on eating at every hoagie place that ever existed.
Is this now a hyperbole-free thread? If so, I'll meander my way back out as I'm clearly the worst poster ever.
Is this the part where I'm supposed to disagree?

It was a joke, Rocky.

Practically whole hometown is on lockdown because of a gunman, I may have. broken something in my ankle last night, I lost my wallet but the nice people in my hometown Suntrust recognized me because my cousin used to work there and therefore gave me cash for my trip back to Knoxville, and ikm now sitting in one of favorite places in the world: Mellow Mushroom, Asheville, NC.

Missed opportunity here. Should have called me something like Matt Damon or Mickey Ward. Disapointed

That wouldn't make sense. Those guys are associated with Boston.

Kind of bummed my Andy Portico line didn't garner more chuckles last night. Too obscure?

Yes, just a Highland Oatmeal Porter with my calzone. Typos are due to a new phone.

Denny's and Arby's both use Swiss on their version of the Philly.

Um yeah. We just closed on the house. After it was all said and done I have a check for $22k plus. We have a room at The Chase and dinner at an awesome restaurant downtown tonight before the game. I'm tweaked out of my mind.

Zero chance the Rangers win tomorrow.
Carp on 3 days rest, Edwin Jackson, and Kyle Lohse. Despite home teams winning the last 8 game 7s in the WS and what had to be a crushing blow to the Rangers last night, I think it's safe to say Cardinals' fans aren't brimming with confidence right now. I'm certainly not.I'd bet the over. And since we were on the topic of erections yesterday, I've had one for the better part of 9 hours now, and it won't go away no matter how many people I "accidentally" rub up against.
:goodposting: You in town?

Man, my uvula is swollen up beyond belief today. Woke me up early this morning when I damn near choked on it in my sleep. At one point I coughed and it landed on my tongue. Second time this week, too... I really hope I'm not getting allergic to beer or something. Really wish shuke was here, he's my go-to guy for advice on my weird medical ailments.
When I first read this post, my brain misread that as "vulva."I like my brain's version better.

What does this even mean?
I'm having dinner from a franchise restaurant tonight for the first time in my life. See if you can guess the franchise.
OH Bull####
He doesn't mean the first time at any franchise restaurant, he means the first time from one particular franchise restaurant.
:lmao: :lmao: Shuke gets confused by GM's somewhat poorly worded sentence about getting an erection but he completely understands GM's somewhat poorly worded sentence about getting food from a franchise restaurant.

In a related note (re: GM and franchise crapfood), some of the most uncomfortable 5 minutes of my life was when I worked at a Subway one summer. I'd quite smoking the debil's weed for 3 or 4 years then, but my shift partner talked me into smoking a blunt with him to make an otherwise boring night go by quicker. So there I am, high beyond reason, and the door opens to two cops.

They were there for our crappy food.

Now if you ever been to Subway, you have to interact a lot with the customers as you build their sandwich. I did this stoned out of my mind with both cops because scumbag shiftmate ran into the backroom as soon as they approached.

ETA: I think that's the last time I ever did any illegal drug. No shtick.

Congrats, Bob.
On the house, thanks GB. Need one more miracle from the Cards. The way things are going I'm not ruling out me having sex with the entire Rams cheer leading core tonight.

small random box of crap, taped and ready to ship. who deserves it?
:bye: unpublished pics of knuckles in exchange?
WINNERplease PM the pics and your address.
I am not technologically savvy enough to pull this off from my phone--unless you just pm me your phone.number, then I could just text em to you.
Just send them attached to a text message, and enter your email address instead of a phone number. It'll text the pics to your email account. I assume you can take it from there.
