GM's thread about nothing (28 Viewers)

I've watch SportsCenter a handful of times in my life. It has always sucked.

I wish Bobby Sac was still here. We're having Pappy's for our company lunch today.

I've never really understood the hate for Sportscenter. It's highlights of every relevant sporting event that day. What's to hate?
The highlights back in the day on MNF were great. I hate the "experts" but not as much as I hate the guys on Sunday morning recreating plays on the faux indoor field.

Nice. Wife, son, and I will be across the Columbia in Hood River over the weekend. Enjoy Skamania. :)
Sweet! What are you guys doing in Hood River? One of our favorite tasting rooms is in Hood River - Naked Winery. Excellent wines and they have Double Mountain on tap. Fantastic place.
Eh, have had some kinda ugly extended family stuff this year, so we told both sides we're doing our own thing for Christmas. Wife went to HR with some girlfriends a few years back and really liked it, so suggested we head up there (we're in Central Oregon). Staying at a cheap little lodge on the Columbia. Going to a Christmas Eve service, then out to dinner. Christmas day we're gonna brave the cold and sleet and take the boy to Multnomah Falls, hike around, get some pics. He's really into Amazing Race so I put together a kind of "Hood River Amazing Race" for that day, with clues and tasks and such. After we finish that off we'll watch movies and play games and snack in our room. Low key, but I think it'll be fun. :popcorn:ETA: Jack squat open Christmas day, but making a note of Naked Winery for a more romantic trip later. :boomchickabrowncow:
Check out Skamania Lodge before/after Multnomah. They have a gorgeous spread and it might be fun to grab a cup of hot chocolate by the giant fire place. Kid friendly. Also, Full Sail has a nice restaurant in Hood River. If open, might be worth your time. Again, kid friendly. I really like Hood River.

We have eleven grandkids - 9 adults, sweet baby girl (2) and mensachild (12). So natch everyone wants to be around my kids on Christmas morning. We've been waffling if we want a country house or not, but I really want to pull the trigger. Getting the kids out of the city in the summer would be awesome. But mostly, I just want enough room to put everybody up. I'm borrowing two friends apartments this week (one is visiting family in Italy, the other is in Hawaii), and more staying out in Jersey. Its a bit much.
where you thinking for the country house?we're at a point, even with jobs, where we've been completely priced out of anywhere in the city we'd want to be. Country place is the only option in terms of buying... always thought about the Catskills- Andes, Phoenecia, etc. I've always wanted to design our own little freak-a-shack up there.
My uncle has a country house.

I love spreads!

That Skamania spread does look amazing, but we're on a budget. Full Sail was my first choice, but closed Christmas and closing early Christmas Eve. :fishing: Hot chocolate at Skamania does sound like a winner though. :banned:

I think im gonna go and grab 2-3 pounds of shrimp cocktail now just for the helz of it. My goal will to be to eat at least half tonight while I wait for some free leeshes to start. :fishing:

For lunch I made myself a "poorman's chinese food" (grilled chicken breast w/hot sauce and soy sauce and some rice). I really like my faux kung pao with peanuts but didn't have any handy. Then i remembered one of my students gave me a bag of homemade Chex mix.

I dumped the Chex mix out on a plate and took out all the peanuts and cashews. I would have used a shoebox lid or album cover but my kid was standing there.

Am I the only one with a mega-stressed out wife? The holidays ar e driving her bonkers - bunch of out-of-towners flying in, planning dinner, accommodations.

Biggest reason I want to get a country house is 1) place to summer, and 2) get through the last 6 weeks of the year without killing each other.

I'm 180 out from G.M. right now...life is not good. I cannot get upset about things that are beyond my control. I just shrug and move onto to something I can change or fix. Drives Mrs. BL crazy (truth be told, anything I did right now would probably piss her off - she is in impossible to get along with mode).

Cheers anyway.

:hey:
After going to see my family at Thanksgiving and then a trip to Mr. krista4's family for Christmas, Mr. proposed the following: next year we fix Thanksgiving and invite anyone and everyone to join us if they wish. At Christmas we go to a beach somewhere and also invite anyone to join us. I agreed except for nixing the "invite anyone to join us" part on Christmas.YMMV based on having kids, though. But the holidays are for the birds, IMO. Love my family and want to see them, but no need for it to be at this insane point in the year.
Wife and I are leaving town Christmas day (first time she's been in Portland for Xmas) to head down the Gorge and stay here that day/night. Love this place and think I might have mentioned it to you a while back. Tremendous food, huge fire places, great place to sit and read and just relax. Cannot wait. :fishing:
:bookmark: for next summer.
Hey, if we want to get a little cornhole together for a Ducks game, I would for sure be down with that. But getting tickets will be tough and I'd need to know well in advance to get the best deal. Otherwise, we'd be stuck negotiating with craigslist/scalpers. I have two tickets, but can put in for more on any single game. Just need a heads up.Party it up hard in Eugene post game, then meander our way through wine country on the way back to Portland the next day, finishing with some great food and drink in Portland. Could be a lot of fun!
I would be up for September 10 (v. Nevada). The only thing that would prevent our coming would be if my company's in the midst of our IPO, in which case you could just give the tickets to friends (we'd be paying you back for those plus treating you to wine, food, etc. during this as a thank-you anyway).

The Hood River Amazing Race sounds like a really cool idea!

Skamania looks nothing like what I would have pictured if you had just told me that word. Would have assumed lots of hipsters with weird beards, wallet chains, plaid pants and newsboy hats going mad in syncopated rhythm.

Bart - how was the sleep study. Was at the doctor last week and there was a mention of sleep apnea and possible relation to a high BP reading and potential sleep study.

For lunch I made myself a "poorman's chinese food" (grilled chicken breast w/hot sauce and soy sauce and some rice). I really like my faux kung pao with peanuts but didn't have any handy. Then i remembered one of my students gave me a bag of homemade Chex mix.

LMAO

Mrs. Bart just got back from the doctor with Cal. I felt a lump by his neck/chest/shoulder that made me uncomfortable. Plus he seemed to have a hard time hearing us lately. He keeps asking "what did you say" and when I would ask him what he thought I said he would repeat it verbatim or say "oh yeah, right."

Turns out he has a lot of fluid on his ears that caused the lump in his Lymph node. Thank God.

I was telling the nurse hooking me up last night about his trouble going to bed at night and she suggested a sleep study. I told Mrs. Bart to mention this to his primary today and the doc suggested we try melatonin. First 1mg and progress up to 3mg if needed. WTF was she for the last two years with this melatonin suggestion? It has been hell getting him to bed 90% of the time.

Who knew kids would be this much work?

My son is 6 and goes ape poo for it. We do it around the house all the time, and once in a while even around town. This is the first time we're doing one in another town.I found these Amazing Race clue templates via Google: Amazing Race Templates (Sometimes I love middle age hausfraus). So his Amazing Race clues/tasks are things like following me in some exercises first thing in the morning, finding the local hospital and visiting with and giving a gift to one person who's alone Christmas Morning, going to a local trail I read about and counting how many steps it takes to cross the bridge over the creek, going to another trail and checking out an old highway tunnel that's part of the trail, and going to Multnomah Falls so Mom can take pics. Puzzles and brain teasers and stuff as part of the clues. Anyway, it'll end up back at the lodge so he can unwrap his biggest gift, which will be his prize for completing the Hood River Amazing Race.

Pretty sure most kids would enjoy this kinda thing, and it can definitely be molded to fit age/knowledge levels. It's a staple for us keeping him entertained.
