GM's thread about nothing (18 Viewers)

For the 3rd week in a row, Birmingham NFL fans have been subjected to the Panthers game. I assume it's the Cam Newton factor. I've probably mentioned it in this thread already, but in the end, I just assumed some Auburn graduate was making the decisions at Fox. This week though? I thought for sure they wouldn't be airing what was sure to be a craptastic game against Jacksonville, but CBS stepped up to the plate. Thankfully the game ended and I'm watching the end of the Saints/Texans now.
Huntsville got the Saints game on the CBS affiliate instead of the normal Titans ####. I assume it was because of Ingram.
I saw a pissed off Titans fan complaining about this. He showed a release from the station who included Ben Tate as a reason along with Ingram.
I feel I speak for most of America when I say, "Who gives a #### about the Titans?"
 Birmingham and probably Hunstivlle as well have been subjected to their miserable games for years. I always had Sunday Ticket, but would always laugh at the garbage the local stations showed. Now I have to live with it.I admit, the first two weeks with the Panthers actually worked out for Fox, but anyone could see this Jaguars game was going to be an abortion. Only 70 points scored in the Saints game. F'n CBS.

First stop on yesterday's Brew Tour I don't believe in Heaven, but I'm hoping when I die, I spend the afterlife here. Some of you beer drinkers would absolutely love this place. Really cool behind the scenes tour with the Brewmaster. Guy was probably not yet 30, but has the world by the balls. Their beers were incredible.

TF> I'd like to, but I'm afraid that thing is going to be worth a lot of dough in 30 years. I don't want to have sad stories like my dad about how his Mom threw out his Mickey Mantle card. There are some copies avail. on eBay for ~100$ or so.
Yeah I know, I've got a feeling those are fakes though.

I have trouble convincing myself to meet dudes from the internet. So, the guys that have to do it with their wives crack me up to no end. :lmao: I would love to hear that conversation.

EDIT: 9
You should have been there during Sunday Tailgating at PJ20. Explained the many times I've had to explain to Mrs. TF on "What I was doing" and "Who I was going with" for all of the FBGs that I have to TU and BeTheMatch. She's actually met Zilla, KidC, Gator, JoeT, Jplvr, Wilked and CGRDRJoe

God, GMHole 2012 gives me a boner.
Good thing, you're the designated driver. :excited:
:lmao:Extra funny knowing TUP can't drive.
:lmao: Just spitballing here, but checking out VRBO right now to find some nice sized dwellings that would accomodate us all and it seems like our best options would be either the coast or the central part of the state. I can loby for either option, but both would be a lot of fun. If we did the coast (about 90 minute drive from Portland) we could fish on the Pacific and catch things like Rockfish, Sea Bass, Lingcod and other bottom dwellers. We could also do some crabbing for Dungeness Crab, which is delicious. Hikes, golf, casinos and of course, lots and lots of drinking. We could also try and do a tour of the Rogue Brewery or hit some wineries. Central part of the state would be a longer drive for all (though you can fly into Bend which is an option, but would cost a little more) but would offer up a few more things the coast would not. For one, we could set up a rafting trip on the Deschutes, which would be a LOT of fun. Bend is a good sized town that has grown up in a hurry but would have some fun nightlife. Deschutes Brewery is there and the downtown area is really cool. I think an all day rafting trip would be a hell of a lot of fun. Bring a giant cooler with some cold beers...

Although I'm sure I probably won't be able to attend, put me on the tentative list so I can pretend like there's a chance.

MH1 & 2 were stellar.

IMO, you can't go with hotels. Got to have everyone in one place...makes it so much more fun.

This would be my ideal Northwest experience, if you care about fishing:you can rent a floating house or two on the Columbia or Willamette (better) that you can dock boats to. If you did this in early April (depending on the regs) on the Columbia, you'd be able to house everyone on the water in Portland with world class strip clubs, bars and restaurants, plus dock the fishing boats up to the floating houses and fish wide open king salmon in the morning before and after breakfast. This could only happen the second week of April, around the 10th.
Despite the strict timeline and probably crappy weather, this is the best plan put forth for all of this so far (besides the original meet up hitting a local hole idea). Sunriver is fantastic and offers everything that GM said that it does, especially when you start looking into July. It is also about 3 hours away from Portland...not so great for folks rolling into the State when there are so many options just in the PDX area. The trout fishing is pretty good regardless of the method used and there are also plenty of spots in the area to pick up some bass and pan fish. Water-ski, raft, hike, bike, ATV, or shoot, it is all right there...and the properties available in this resort community are outstanding. The drive is worth it, but it is a long way from the airport. The Rouge River out near Medford is worse...the best regional airport to fly into is probably in Eugene. The drive is long and boring down the I-5 corridor. It is another destination spot that is worthy of praise and I doubt that you would regret the trip, but for a mass event it is harder than it needs to be. You will still be stuck with trout, bass, and pan fish if you come during the prime summer period.GM has the right idea of getting folks out to see what Oregon is about, but all of this is available right in the greater Portland area (1/3 scale, but still pretty fantastic and you can catch a bit of the Portland culture). My home is about 90 minutes south of GM in the Willamette Valley...it is a beautiful State, I can not wait until I can return for more than just a week or two.
Good points on the travel, though I'm curious how much more it would be for people to fly into Bend vs. Portland. Probably quite a bit more.Yeah, we could just keep it in Portland and maybe look at renting some houses on the river. I've never tried to find a rental, but I'm sure they are there. That would be fun.

Well all these years I never knew that.So what happened to him? He's a good guy.

So what happened to him? He's a good guy.
Good question. I haven't talked to him in a while. He's kept me out of jail at least once and also kept us from getting robbed at gun point on the same trip, most likely. Considering some people on this cornhole list, he'd be a good one to add and he doesn't live "too far" away.Southwest flies to Portland, so that's good. I'm guessing Bend would be a huge jump in price for me personally.A large enough house or all of us would be the most enjoyable thing, I'd agree. Just make sure it has an outdoor fire pit, preferably one not surrounded by flamable seating.

I really, really, really want to attend GMHole12.

However:

I've never really fished. I want to, I really do, but all that talk about seasons and stuff in the last few pages has me scared. :(

All I really want to do is sit around, drink wine, and have any number of people in this thread make me laugh. I can definitely do rafting or what-have-you, but this trip would be about the fellowship, make no mistake.

Finally, I have no idea where Mr. YSR would be on this. He knows of my involvement here, but I think asking for a weekend pass to Oregon miiiight be a bit of a stretch.

"honey, i'm thinking of spending a long weekend in Oregon with 14 guys from the internet..."

I recommend a one week rental from wed to wed. That gives everyone lots of flexibility on arrivals and departures, A week will probably be only marginally more expensive than a long weekend. Also, other than sat, wed it the easiest and cheapest day to fly.

And what's going to happen- if we can find a place willing to rent to 14 i-friends- is one person will likely have to make the reservation and assume financial responsibility for the thing.

So we need to figure out how we are going to get our funds to the guarantor quickly enough that he's willing to do it.

China Scott has a place that might work for a dozen in Tahoe, but the fishing around there is not so hot.

I have spent the last 30 minutes just drooling at the pictures. Very nice.

I've been looking at SW too, but the 2 stops isn't too appealing. I would probably look at flying into PDX, no matter what. I plan on getting a rental, so we just need to time arrivals.I don't mind having to drive a little to get to a location, but could see how that would turn some folks off.

No reason to be scared at all. The best kind of fishing is sitting peacefully with a bobber and your favorite beverage in hand.ETA: The fishing is really secondary to me, but I always enjoy it. I would most likely skip rafting, water-skiing, or similar activities, and would rather fish and put some food on the table.

I love to fish, but I think the likelihood of me actually fishing much is not high. Now drunk wakeboarding/skiing? I'm down. If we're on a lake with access to a boat, an innertube would be fun as well. Rafting would be awesome. GM, any overnight rafting experiences available so we can try peeing on rattlesnakes or is that just a Vegas thing?

Good point, charv. 2 stops on the way out for me on flights as well. FTS. Maybe I'll have some miles to burn. I might look at that tomorrow.

I'm down with wine/brewery trips, or sitting around drinking and watching meat sizzle on the grill.

A week long rental is going to cost quite a bit of money and while I'd love to cover that sort of expense, there's just no way I can be on the hook for that right now.

I'd propose we appoint somebody as 'treasurer' like we do for fantasy baseball leagues and perhaps set a couple of 'due dates' on the calendar for fees to be into the treasurer. Might be easier on folks if we said $100 is due by all by Dec. 31 (just throwing it out there) with another $100 due March 1 (after folks get tax refunds?). Use that money to cover the house, rental cars, groceries, booze...

That way, we can get a list together of who is serious about doing this...seems like a down payment would signify intent to come up and then we could really get an idea of how many and who.

Would be important to get a date and location established first and I know some of you want to do this tomorrow, but I think planning something like this needs some time to do it right. I also have very little in the way of vacation time right now and again, funds for me are limited, especially after the last few months. The market has absolutely destroyed us.

The important thing would be to secure a location to base ourselves and then just let folks figure out what they want to do. Like I said, there's a hundred things we can do up here, but fully realize not everybody is going to want to fish, not everybody is going to want to raft, golf, etc. I think the most fun will be getting together with some good food, some good drink and some good laughs.

Sounds like a plan there. First order of business would probably be setting a date rather than picking a location. I'm sure there's going to be a conflict no matter what date we choose, but once you know who is available for that particular weekend, you can start researching locations and rental availabilities.

This is pretty much me, except I'll fish while you get beaten black and blue on the water skis.

Agree with everything above. Let's set a weekend.

I'm not going to be able to do more than a long weekend, like flying out Wednesday night, land in PDX Thursday morning, have Thurs, Fri, Sat for cornhole activities and fly back on Sunday (or Monday). Not too worried about airfare, but for me it's looking like $600 rt, so it might be similar or more for east coast folks, just FYI.

I still think we should be able to secure lodging for $150-200/night (looking at options online). It really depends on location, but we'll worry about that after setting a time.

ETA: How about July 12 to 16?

Not me. I'll probably be the best water sport athlete at the cornhole... as far as talent involved in being towed behind a boat is concerned.

A week too expensive?

What are you talking about then? 2 nights? 3? A week is probably 50% more than 3 days and your travel costs remain the same. Per day cost of the trip is substantially lowered.

You realize most people not on the west coast will probably travel at least 8 hours each way. I know I am old and crotchety, but 16 hours of travel for 2-3 days is bad value. Not to mention that Friday, Sunday and MOnday flights are quite a bit more expensive than the other days. You guys have 10 months to plan for this and cannot make it a 5-7 day window?

Now I understand GM, that you just roll out of bed and drive an hour or two at most. But consider those further away. Also- no one has to commit to a week, just there for those that want to take more than two days return for ten months of planning.

People have jobs?I don't care about the cost, but there's no way I am letting the inmates run the asylum with me gone more than 2-3 working days. It's not worth the additional effort getting everything running well again. I could work while up there, but that kind of defeats the purpose for being on vacation.

well, if we need to rent boats, then we have to find a different spot than Sun River/Bend, which is why I started looking at Detroit Lake, which is close enough, but still offers a lot of the things we're looking for.
