GM's thread about nothing (41 Viewers)

My nephew turns two next Monday. Suggestions for a present would be appreciated. He's a great kid, and seems as though he is going to be a natural athlete. My MIL has asked that we give no presents, and that we put a little money in his savings fund. We'll do that, but I also want to do a little something for the kid. It's not his fault that his father is in prison and his mother is a depressed drug addict.
Clothes. Seriously.
#### this noise.
Everybody gives my kids toys. So many toys that can't even play with them all. ####, we have toys still in the package around here. We've given 5x the amount of toys I ever had growing up to the poor already. Clothes are expensive and #### adds up quick. Especially when you have a wife that is "too good" to check out a thrift store to buy or sell clothes. I've already begun to instruct people to stop buying them stuff altogether but if they really feel like they must do something, clothes or savings bonds please.YSR, give him a savings bond in a decent sized box he can play in. He'll love it.
#### that noise.

Thanks for the suggestions thus far. We've looked at all of them. One other thing to mention is that this kid, as smart as he seems (just very aware, very expressive with eyebrows, eyes, etc.), isn't talking yet. He utters little things here and there, but thus far, some semblance of "more" is the most distinguishable word I've heard from him.

So I think I'd like to get him something to help him speak, count, etc. All I know is LeapFrog stuff. And Baby Mozart stuff? Just going off of memory from what I've gotten other friends from their registries.

Also, is two really late for speech development?
Books down?
I'd be all about books for the kid, but honestly, I'm not sure he's getting read to at all. And  for not having noticed that until now. But this is also the kid who totes around a sippy cup full of Coca-Cola. Drive me NUTS.
Maybe you could read to him then? We could just be lucky, but we read a ton of books to our 2.5 yr old and he loves them and has a pretty good vocabulary. It can't hurt, imo.
Hard work GB gives results. :hifive:
Reading to your child is hard work?
not really, or at least it shouldn't be... I've seen a lot of cases where it seems like it is though.

:lmao: Suck my bal.....d head.

If this kid had a typical upbringing, I would agree with Bob. My kids get way more toys than they need and plenty of stuff gets shoved in a drawer or the basement never to be seen again. But given what YSR has said about how this kid is being raised, I don't know if he's got a lot of toys or not. Maybe he needs some.

With that said, are you in a position to give this kid some sort of experience as a gift? Like, take him to a puppet show or a kid's music concert or something? It seems like that could be a good thing for him.

Depending on the maturity level of the 2 year old there could be a ton of things to get him. What does he like to do?

Some ideas:

Books, could do all various levels, from touch-and-feel, picture books, early reading, etc

InnoTAB, Grand Parents got this to my oldest, and she likes it every now and then. It has some coloring application, some easy games, some spelling and word games. Pretty much unbreakable (I think this is around $50

Balls, as mentioned before

Sport equipment, we have a baseball/softball in plastic with a bat, ball and a stand for the ball, that teaches coordination more than anything, or an indoor soccer ball with a small net, or whatever sport you like. Pretty much everything is available in indoor versions.

Pool pass/swim lessons, do you have a place nearby with swim lessons?

Lifetime supply of Metformin, seriously, WTF???? Who gives coke to a 2 year old????

This guy knows stuff. Put the savings bond (or set up a 527 plan since savings bonds are basically paying 0% right now) and the clothes in the biggest box you can find.

Wouldn't the kid just eat the bonds, or roll them up in tubes to sniff/drink his coke?

When I was 2-ish one of my uncles brought me maybe 20-30 banana/moving boxes and some packing tape, and helped me build a fort/house with it. Pretty much the best present ever at that age.

YSR - Slow speech at 2 is a little unusual for typical development but not unheard of. If he get closer to 2.5 with little speech they might consider a speech therapist but kids are going to be different. It can also be a sign of autism and the other two major things they look for are social interaction, usually at this age meaning sustained eye contact or interest in other kids their age, and any kind of super-repetitive behavior or fascination with a particular subject or toy - cars or things that spin for instance. If yous see evidence of that kind of behavior you should encourage them to be given the ADOSS test before he is 3 and they can make an official diagnosis. Having him diagnosed with even just speech delay can qualify him for health insurance paid speech therapy (if they have insurance) and certain publicly funded school programs. In both just regular speech delay and autism, early recognition and treatment is the key
I didn't talk till I was 3. By 4 I was reading at a 3rd grade level. Don't sweat it.
Great, the poor ******* is going to end up driving a Miata.

It can be when he wants to read books all night instead of sleep so Da-da can go get himself a bourbon. ;) Mostly it's pretty awesome.

I'm hoping it's a phase... I love that she wants to read for hours, but after hour 2 and the 15th reading of her favorite book(s), daddy is ready to do some shot videos. :banned:

Lukas arrived last night at 11:33pm in Denver's presbyterian hospital weighing 3 lbs. and 6 oz and measuring at 17 inches. Mom and baby (and dad) are doing great and despite the super early arrival the little guy is breathing on his own which has everyone, medical staff included, both stunned and thrilled. If everything continues to go well they could actually be back home in 2 weeks instead of 2+ months.

Thanks for listening.

3 lbs, 6 oz. is a HUGE baby for 29 weeks. Our son (11 now) was born at 31 weeks. He was 4 lbs, 6 oz. He was home after 8 days in NICU. Congrats and continued thoprawishes.

Great news Frosty!

And I just noticed that this thread's founder, GM, is currently at the hospital waiting on BabyGirl GM. Today's a day for good news!

Awesome

Great news Frosty! Hope he grows big and strong.

AC went out yesterday. It was 97 and will be pushing 100 again today. That does not make a pregnant wife happy, especially sleeping in an upstairs bedroom in a 90 year old house. Luckily we were able to have a serviceman come over right away this morning. A blown capacitor and $200 later I have a happy wife again. Oh and I get to finish painting tonight. That would have sucked balls without the AC.

So our neighbors go on vacation. We usually grab their mail for them but our vacations overlapped this year. So they ask the really, really nice Korean family across the street who have lived here almost 2 years to hold their mail. Something was lost in the transition and the Koreans threw all of their mail away. Interesting conversation when they went to pick up their mail. NO MAIL FOR YOU!
What happened with the 9 girls go to camp fiasco?
The girl that slid in at the last minute, dropped out at the last minute. Soccer moms are something else.

Good. Eff that mom.

Flurry of baby talk here today. Heading to new job tomorrow after background check delay. Can't complain about having a five day weekend. I don't think it's hit me yet that I no longer work in public. I guess tomorrow it will.

I'm in the middle of planning a proposal that involves crossing an international border, a seaplane and a landing craft. Unless she wises up and says no, on September 2 I'm on my way to becoming a poor dumb ******* again.

I'm not positive but based on the last few posts, -fish- is marrying Bogart's ex.
