RFTC existed in Cleveland from 74-75, before disbanding. Guitarists Dave Thomas and Peter Laughner went on to form Pere Ubu, while Cheetah Chrome started the Dead Boys. Both bands early sets included RFTC songs: Pere Ubu released "30 Seconds over Tokyo" as a single, the Dead Boys did "Sonic Reducer." Thomas and Chrome weren't the only songwriters though, Peter Laughner's "Amphetamine" is as great as any rock anthem, and was shamelessly stolen by Jeff Tweedy for the Wilco song "Misunderstood." Laughner died in 1977.There were no studio recordings of the original RFTC, but The Day the Earth Met Rocket from the Tombs collects a bunch of live bootlegs. They got back together in the early 00's for a one-off tour (I was lucky enough to see them in Chicago--they were great) with Television's Richard Lloyd replacing Laughner. The shows were documented on the excellent Rocket Redux.I've never heard of Rocket from the Tombs nor Sonic Reducer. Must check out.'Good said:To be fair, he's 100% correct and you are 0% correct.'Tiger Fan said:Krista> please service Mr. Krista...he seems a bit pent up
I don't care if this post is months old, but it is too horrific to fail to mention. Rocket from the Tombs kicked more ### in the first wave of their brief, under-documented existence than two decades worth of Vedder's affected, sheep-like bleating. Almost no band on earth has come up with anything as singularly awesome as "Sonic Reducer" and it sure as scrotum hasn't been improved upon by Pearl Jam.A whole ton of Pearl Jam ones:
Sonic Reducer
Your opinion on this matter is incorrect. You are a poor judge of aesthetic execution and artistic intention and you are therefore, by extension, a bad person.
Shame on you. Be better.

Shamelessly stolen? He used four lines from the song as a tribute and credited Laughner in the liner notes and on their website. Does it mean you're going to have too much Chardonnay and take a pic of yourself giving us the finger in the men's room?Wife texted me and wants me to meet her right after work at our drinking spot. Oo-la-la. You know what that means?

4 lines, the chords, and the melody. Not that there is anything wrong with that. Seriously. I don't care that he stole it. Every musician I know steals bits of other's stuff. Call it a musical allusion if it makes you feel better. It is nice that he credited Laughner and he obviously loves the song, but the point is that he appropriated a big chunk of someone else's song in his own. I used the word shameless because, well, he did it obviously and without shame.. Incidentally, I just learned that one of my favorite bands stole a chunk of an Uncle Tupelo song (not at all my favorite band) for their own purposes. I doubt Tweedy/Farrar were credited.Shamelessly stolen? He used four lines from the song as a tribute and credited Laughner in the liner notes and on their website. Doesn't surprise me at all. Their records from that era were awful. Incidentally, I saw the Pixies 15 years after their relevancy and thought the same thing. Modern Dance, and Datapanik in Year Zero are awesome, essential albums. That'll give you a pretty good idea of why people talk about Pere Ubu the way they talk about Wire, Devo, Gang of Four, etc.I saw Pere Ubu open up for the Pixies in 1991(?) Snoozeville.
