GM's thread about nothing (9 Viewers)

[asking a used car dealer about the difference in mileage between when he got a car one month earlier, and when he sold it]

"So that works out to about 20 miles per day for a month. Does that mean that you drove that car 20 miles every single day?"

:wall:

This deposition is making me homicidal.
Still going.

This attorney is two steps short of re tard ed, and he's stumbling forward. My stomach's growling and all I can think about is a martini. And I had to have my ex pick up my son from school and take him tonight so I can finish this damn thing tonight, which means I've spent one night with him since Sunday. FML
I've never been in a deposition, but are there ways to amuse yourself (other than posting here) like interjecting ludicrous objections or some such?
The questions are so ludicrous or so poorly posed, I have to object seriously, and it's 2-3 objections at least I could state to most of these questions. I've interjected plenty of pointed, sarcastic comments, but at this point I've got to let this moron finish and it's best I largely stay out of the way.Meanwhile, I've got the FFA, Facebook, texting, a court reporter who was probably cute 15 years ago, an overweight middle-aged Egyptian-American witness, an incompetent white boy defending him, an even more incompetent, pompous and obnoxious Asian attorney asking the questions, and a 27th floor window that's looking more and more attractive to me as a potential exit.

I just hope my old law partner is still at work downtown for me to grab a drink with (he probably is as he's a night owl, but he may be busy).

Thanks GMTAN for keeping me (relatively) sane!
I remember being in a negotiation for 51 hours straight once, and there was a cup of little plastic knives in the room that looked more and more tempting as an exit strategy. Wish I'd had the GMTAN. Stay strong and get to that martini. ;)

I can't even imagine doing that. It was my disgruntlement working in a law firm that led me to being an artist. It was 1991-3, and I was working for this public sector law firm in Sh(P)alo Alto. I had been working as a lead researcher, because I could read fast and summarize well. I used have log onto this wacky, pre-internet WestLaw system that cost the client like $90.00 per hour plus my time. At that time, in CA, you didn't have to have a law degree to practice law. If you passed the bar, and practiced with an attorney, you could practice some law under something called "reading law". The partners were encouraging me to do that because I was a billing machine. Then 1 weekend, I was full in the middle of some similar stupidity that you were, and I thought: this is stupid. I hate this. I am 22 years old, I have no wife, no kids, and I am in a job I hate that will only get worse- for the money.

Blech.

So, if I could ditch this, what would I do? I really liked making paintings. That was awesome.

hang tough tinker/tatum
 There's parts of this job that I enjoy, but this is the stuff that is torture.

I honestly don't know what I'd do without wifi. Probably get arrested for lewd conduct just trying to pass the time.

I suppose I should be insulted cos didn't call me. I don't know any current soccer players, but I did have "fun" with about half the girls on the team at my university back in the late nineties.
One of many things I learned outside the classroom at college was -Soccer players = great behinds.Crew girls = amazing front ends. I married a crew girl.

I just have to post though this is not necessarily interesting to anyone at all. It's been such a good news/bad news day.I know we joke about the cats but our fuzziest and sweetest cat was diagnosed today as being in acute renal failure. He's only about two years old. There is a chance it is just a severe infection (he had a urinary tract infection that was treated but might have spread), but it could be leukemia or something else awful. He is very scared and it's awful to think of. Then about 15 minutes ago I went to check on the older cat that I have to keep separate because the others attack her. She had peed blood all over the bed a few different times. So off she goes to the vet tomorrow morning, which I hope is not too late. She's had a nice life so it's not as hard as the young fuzzy one, but still...On the good news side is not just the job stuff...I posted in here about a month ago about the intellectual property manager on my team who was diagnosed with leukemia (third person in my group in a year to be diagnosed with cancer  ). I haven't followed up because the news for him has been dire. He immediately went into chemo, then to bone marrow typing, then back into chemo. Has not been out of the hospital except to travel to another hospital. Anyway, they had flown his sister in to see if she was a match for a bone marrow donation, and we found out today that she was a perfect match on all 8 of the items they test! Still a very long and unknown road for him but this was great news.On that front, I've been learning a lot about bone marrow donation as many of us had volunteered to be typed if his sister wasn't a match. My understanding is that bone marrow donation is not hard on the donor, and the testing is easy. I'm going to go ahead and get tested and be on the list in case I can help someone else whether I know them or not. Would encourage GMTANers to look into this, too. :)

My wife ran a donor matching program for GM and the UAW a few years back. She got a nice paycheck and I received a nice Charles Haley autographed hat. Life Match

Soccer update - My friend whose wife plays rec league soccer has gone radio silence. So I'm guessing that's out. However, I have another friend that is plugged into the local soccer scene and thinks he can find some players. I sent him an email about 15 minutes ago with the details. The only mildly interesting part is that the guy we're relying on is Lanny, who is better known as "the black guy who wears a kilt to every Longhorn football game."

I have a Charles Haley autographed hat from when he was nailing my 17 year old cousin. I'm sure it was a bad idea for her, but I got great seats to some Cowboys games.

I know this is sarcasm, but that's basically what I did. Walked into the AM station that was carrying local HS football, told them I'd lug equipment, fetch coffee, whatever it took to get my foot in the door. They put me right on the air calling games. I'll never make a living doing it, but I do love it.

By the way, I've thought a bit recently, perhaps coshole-related, about how long the GMTAN notion lasts. I mean, I can't imagine breaking away, but we can't possibly be here posting when we're in our 80s, right? How would that work? Of course I then think of Tanner and realize it might be possible.
Who knows? I got married in 2002, and I've been on some form of the FFA my whole married life. I remember when proninja was fiscally successful and had a full head of beautiful hair. It's a weird thing to think about though.
I announced my daughter being successfully conceived after 4 years of fertility treatments in the Deadly Animal Draft. Years later, I started a thread about my wife leaving me a week before Christmas--GM, Cappy,Ditkaless Wonders and some others pretty much got me through that week. Had there been GMTAN back then, those would have just been posts in here.I got fired after 13 years with the same firm...after telling my GF and my ex-wife, GMTAN found out before the rest of my friends and family. I'm probably in for some version of this for the long haul. By the way, GM, I'm in Portland overnight next Wednesday, after happy hour with some of the people I'm interviewing with.
It's really a form of codependency. I'm probably in for the long haul too.
I realized this a few years ago. I can't quit you #######s.

Hey RFW...how much you want for "Lessons Learned"?
I'm a big fan of "Grab."ETA: and RFW, I still love "Elegies of Gulfport, blue 2."
I think Blue 2 might be my favorite. I thought it said eagles though. bag

Cosjobs - are you going to tell the group about the situation that led to our phone conversation this afternoon? Seems like a story worth telling.
Who'd of thought there would be excessive drama when you get 15 women together, but you never know. There was lotsa drama after the Austin soccer team (the new pro team, many of whom are staying at AO) lost their first game last weekend vs. Texas A&M.

And evidently some things were said that cannot be unsaid and most of the team were fired.

So the owner has a match Saturday against the Monterrey Mexico team here in Austin and is at least a dozen players shot. The owner is super savvy on the business end of things and has sponsors flying in and it would really suck if she had to ancel.

So I spent all afternoon making alls in search of anyone who knew an in shape ready to play soccer woman who would be willing to suit up and give it ago on Sat at noon.

This may come as a surprise to many of you, but I don't usually hang out much with 20 year old soccer players, so its taken a couple of layers of networking to find the bodies we need.

Bentley's in my rolodex and sure enough he hooked me up with someone who knew someone.

There's a chance we may field a team in time.
Pics?

Do you still do this? That sounds like a great side gig/hobby. I've always had a vague desire to try my hand at sports writing, covering HS with the aim of working my way into covering the local AA team. It'd be cool being that close to the game.

This is good stuff. Cos, you should post the stats of each of their games. This business savvy owner must have a team website, right? In fact, the GMTAN should be a sponsor. Who here wouldn't chip in $50 to see a small "GMTAN" patch above these ladies lovely tender yet firm breasts? Better still, let's try to convince Krista to buy the team. :excited:

I'm ramping up the job search again (had not looked at listings in a few weeks) and saw a listing today for Deputy General Counsel at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. Dream job. I'm unlikely to be considered qualified given I haven't done a lot of arts-related work, but might as well throw in a resume anyway.

Meanwhile, the Rye Brook guy is putting on a hard sell, which I have to admit feels very, very good. E-mailed me to tell me how excited the CEO and rest of management are to meet me. :)
Sweet.Btw: "Puppy" in the book you slid me towards may have freaked me out more than "Sticks".
From your note and your post in the books thread I was concerned maybe I shouldn't have recommended it to you. :lmao:
No no, it's all good. I'm enjoying it; it's just creepy as hell. He's already gotten me twice in the first three stories, where I thought it was going one way and it went another - neither of them "Sticks" which I still don't know what to think of.Someone posted an interview in the book thread with Saunders. At one point he says that these stories have a little more hope and happiness in them than his previous work

Hey RFW...how much you want for "Lessons Learned"?
I have to make sure that I still have that one. I am pretty sure I do. The work I made before Katrina on wood held up better than the works on canvas- they just floated around for awhile. For a football guy and a jaded educator (and since I am not dealing with a gallery that will take half of the sales price) I would sent it you for half price of what I get for older oil painting that size$625.00 shipped.
Is there any chance you might die soon? I could probably see spending $625 if I knew the painting would go up in value.

I survived. We finished (and by "finished", I do mean the entire deposition, than God) at 6:50 last night. This is something that should have been done in 4-5 hours, tops, and it took a full 10 hours of grinding ineptitude stretched over two days.

I quit in March 2007 right after Dylan was born for 4 months or so. But yeah.

Pics?

[asking a used car dealer about the difference in mileage between when he got a car one month earlier, and when he sold it]

"So that works out to about 20 miles per day for a month. Does that mean that you drove that car 20 miles every single day?"

:wall:

This deposition is making me homicidal.
Still going.

This attorney is two steps short of re tard ed, and he's stumbling forward. My stomach's growling and all I can think about is a martini. And I had to have my ex pick up my son from school and take him tonight so I can finish this damn thing tonight, which means I've spent one night with him since Sunday. FML

Wow, that would be hell for me. I'm not good at sitting still for that long. After the new guy finished with my snow blower (he grew up in the south side of Chicago, was living in Lisbon, Hamburg, London then moved here from Decatur, IL. Natural progression obviously. This is promising.) I called my GB up the street to see if he wanted to borrow it. He did but I could see him struggling with it so I walked up there with a 24oz whiskey in tow. We got his driveway done and he cracked a beer. His wife then opens the door and says "I bet Bob needs more whiskey" and then filled my cup with nothing but. Twice. Holy Shiva did she get me drunk. I think she may be kind of sweet on me.....
