anyway. I've dodged that bullet twice this time. 2 cigarettes over the those last 9 years, but neither allowed nicotine to grab onto my soul again.I quit from age 21-26 and was dumb enough to start again. A couple of smokes on a drunken afternoon got that ball rolling. Within a week, I was at the conv store counter asking for a pack of Newports when things at work went south one day. I was full-fledged smoker again for about 7-8 years.That's how I started again - even when I quit I always imagined I'd start again at some point. And honestly I am having trouble convincing myself that I'm done smoking entirely which means i may be defeating myself already, but maybe that's normal too.It happens. Not trying to be a deterrent, but 9 years, 5 days and about 12 hours later, I still get a craving here and there. At this point I doubt it will ever go away completely, but I can assure that those cravings become less frequent.Survived another day without smoking.
I have heard that the chemicals are out of your body by day 3 and after that it's all some sort of physical addiction or some such. We shall see.

Actually, I was just relaying the conversation with another coworker and she informed me that her parents own a liquor store and she'll just have them put a bottle aside when they get their next shipment.***
*** Their store is in Kingsport, TN so I am going to take it with a grain of salt.

My kid's school situation is stressing me out again. Last year was a pretty rough year for him as he has some learning issues and his teacher didn't have a clue how to deal with him.
So this year he gets in the program we had been hoping for. Doing better than ever. Finally happy at school. Now, the new superintendent that the district hired this summer wants to shut it down. Frustrating.

And that was my favorite one.
I am seriously depressed. I woke up depressed anyway, and now this has thrown me all the way down. Feel like I'm going to cry from the stress of everything. Or punch someone.

We did. This program is no small thing. There are over 500 kids in it across six grades. The day after the announcement the parents showed up en masse to the school board meeting. The superintendent has now publicly backed off his first announcement but it's clear that he's not going to let things be.

No TV news yet but there has been a couple of local articles and an editorial or two. One problem is that it's a gifted magnet program and there are a lot of parents in the district that think it's elitist, etc. But a study done several years ago shows that it pulls in a LOT of kids that would otherwise go private or charter. It's a money-maker for the district, so we're hoping the board will make the right decisions when it finally gets that far.

His official take is something along the lines of pushing the wonderful things the program does out to all of the kids. In reality, it seems to be due to fear of lawsuits (more demographically skewed than the gen. ed. population).

You don't think the wonderful things the program does can be pushed out to all the kids? Not trying to argue with you - I'm just curious as to why any superintendent, as under fire as they almost always are, would want to cut a successful program.

I've read a lot of the research on the subject over the last year, both as we considered putting our son in the program and with the latest mess. Basically, the buzzword du jour in education is differentiation. The more unique that teachers can tailor the learning experience to suit each kid, the better. By taking the gifted students out and putting them in a separate classroom, the band of ability narrows both in that classroom and the general ed. room. The research says this is a good thing for all involved.
Plus, a lot of these kids have quirks. ADHD, anxiety, OCD, Asperger's, etc. is all over the place in my son's program (he's ADHD). So my son had a miserable time in the classroom because keeping his attention is hard enough, but when he's bored because the material is easy it just became impossible for the teacher to manage. And a lot of these kids have this experience.
So the program gives them a chance to be around kids more like them. The social improvement has been profound.
For each unit of school, they move much quicker than the general ed. classroom. They then stay within the unit and go deeper in the material (more projects, experiments, etc.) This has been awesome to keep these kids involved. So even though they don't move faster than the regular classroom, they get more challenges. The teachers couldn't pull this off if they were all integrated back into the regular classroom.

And as for why he wants to cut it. I have to think it's the discrimination thing. Minorities are even more under-represented in this program. Of course we believe that would be better addressed through the admittance process than just doing away with the program.
Also, the elementary school and the middle school where the program is also have general ed. classrooms. One thing this causes is that when the state tests are done, these schools get flagged for having too much variation in scores which leads to extra attention from the state. We would argue that the solution would be to give the program it's own building. There are more than enough kids for it and the building space is there. But it would force a re-districting which is never popular.
