Didn't know about UHaul. We looked at craigslist and found some for $40/hour for the loading, and we also thought about just going the Home Depot day-worker route. Will check out U-Haul.Oof.I recommend hiring local movers to help you load and unload. UHaul subcontracts companies that will rent you a couple of movers for ~$50 an hour per guy. Strong backs and lots of energy.Back to business...today I had two moving companies come to give me an estimate for our move to Seattle. JFC are moves expensive?!?!! You would think I would know this, but other than moving out of the country and back, I haven't paid for my own move since 1993. It's insane. Activating self-move.
Wow, maybe mine aren't so bad. Got one for $8300 today and am awaiting the second. This wouldn't seem so bad but WE HAVE NO STUFF since moving back to the country. Really, a couple of beds, a couple of TVs, a couple of couches...not the years of stuff most people would have nor the tons of stuff we got rid of before moving. Just seemed outlandish. Old Krista (no comments) would have just paid without thinking about it, but this is not your grandfather's Krista.I'm only moving ~300 miles. One company quoted me $4300 and another $2500.Back to business...today I had two moving companies come to give me an estimate for our move to Seattle. JFC are moves expensive?!?!! I nailed that advertising presentation today, BTW. I'm sure y'all cared. Anyone in the room today would have been convinced that I knew what I was talking about and that the pages in that report that I'd randomly flagged and looked at during the presentation had actual meaningful information on them. CEO loved my first choice for the campaign, which wasn't the first choice for either my boss or the marketing VP. And I got the "I'm retiring in a couple years and you should keep up the good work" speech from our marketing VP again after it.
Think I'll get piss drunk on rum again tonight to celebrate.
That's cute.I already have some gray on my chin...
Should I invest in some Just For Men?Every bottle of that should come with a pair of boxer-briefs that has "Just For Men" embroidered on them. That's cute.I already have some gray on my chin...

Apparently there is some tariff issue with a PA intrastate move that makes it expensive. The $2500 company is shipping my stuff on a big truck with other loads and can only promise me delivery between feb 26-28 right now, but will know the real date by feb 20. The other company would move m stuff alone and deliver the day after packing.Didn't know about UHaul. This is true. I'm sick that I am paying all this to move, then paying high rent for a house, only likely to move in 12-18 months when I buy a house. I'm not in the position to qualify for a mortgage with a new job and close on a house in less than a month right now.Moving is worse than Hitler.
How much would it be to rent the truck for a self-move?Oh yeah, that is the other HUGE advantage to moving ourselves...because we have so little stuff, there is a three-week timeframe where we would get delivery. Three weeks. Driving it ourselves means we get it in three days.
How about just buying new beds and stuff?Oh yeah, that is the other HUGE advantage to moving ourselves...because we have so little stuff, there is a three-week timeframe where we would get delivery. Three weeks. Driving it ourselves means we get it in three days.
It's a large container that you pack up yourself and then they store or move it for you. Is this for me? Who are PODs?Is PODS an option?
I use Just For Men - Landon Calrisian

you don't know what PODS are?Is this for me? Who are PODs?Is PODS an option?
Thankfully my GB owns a moving company. My next move will be a hole in the ground. This is true. PM Shuke for the answer.Just got a sarcastic sensi-poo PM from a fellow Seahawks fan for a smart-### remark I made in the pool.
This is a thing? People do this?
This is what I was thinking. Why not just sell the stuff you have on craigslist then buy new stuff when you get to Seattle? Throw your clothes and a few personal effects in the car and ROAD TRIP!!!How about just buying new beds and stuff?Oh yeah, that is the other HUGE advantage to moving ourselves...because we have so little stuff, there is a three-week timeframe where we would get delivery. Lol...yeah check it out. I've used them on a local move and would use again. My buddy used them for cross country move once I think. Worth looking into.Is this for me? Who are PODs?Is PODS an option?
with the benefit of hindsight, this probably isn't a thing a grown man should say even in jest"sensi-poo"?
We used it when we were staging the house. Pretty convenient. Had the movers unload it though.you don't know what PODS are?it's a moving service. they deliver a big box, you put your stuff in it, they move the box, then you unload your stuff. Is this for me? Who are PODs?Is PODS an option?
Truck is $1400.How much would it be to rent the truck for a self-move?Oh yeah, that is the other HUGE advantage to moving ourselves...because we have so little stuff, there is a three-week timeframe where we would get delivery. Three weeks. Driving it ourselves means we get it in three days.
Definitely thought about that. Since we have so little and are not connected to it (not like when I got rid of the rest of my stuff in August) we could just start over, mostly, but #######IT I hate buying mattresses. That is the biggest factor; they are so damn expensive and such a pain and I love the two we bought. How about just buying new beds and stuff?Oh yeah, that is the other HUGE advantage to moving ourselves...because we have so little stuff, there is a three-week timeframe where we would get delivery. I berated my GB from KC for a solid five severely drunken minutes for saying "phone tag" Saturday night.with the benefit of hindsight, this probably isn't a thing a grown man should say even in jest"sensi-poo"?
Yes, that was my reference to "a couple of TVs". They are big and beautiful. We could sell and rebuy, I suppose.didn't you just buy 2 new flatscreens in Atlanta?
Why would they be much cheaper than a normal mover? Nevermind, will check out. Thanks!Lol...yeah check it out. I've used them on a local move and would use again. My buddy used them for cross country move once I think. Worth looking into.Is this for me? Who are PODs?Is PODS an option?
Hold on, WAIT! So all they do is the driving? I like the driving part. Why would they be much cheaper than a normal mover? Nevermind, will check out. Thanks!Lol...yeah check it out. That may be true, but I think you are failing to appreciate how far it is from Atlanta to Seattle. I just asked the google and the reply was:Hold on, WAIT! So all they do is the driving? From Minnesota to New York as a kid and from Minnesota to Utah as an adult. Enjoyed and hated them both in different ways.Big fan of driving across the country at least once in your life....it's a big asssssss place.
Oh, I'll definitely look into it tomorrow. Thanks for the recommendation (you too, Aaron). Other than Nica I have never been in control of my own move so really don't know much, or anything really, about choosing how to move. I guess as great as the cross-country trek sounds (I've never been to South Dakota!) it might not be the ideal time to do it. Might be best just to get the #### out there without the hassle. You can still drive all your cats and husbands.Hold on, WAIT! So all they do is the driving? I'd just look into it as an option but don't know if it's the best option for you. I drove from Texas to Oregon...but all I owned back then was clothes, fabulous hair, books on tape and unbridled enthusiasm. My parents shipped my giant speakers.
I would like someone to drive me across the country.Big fan of driving across the country at least once in your life....it's a big asssssss place.

I've done Chicago to LA and back on my own when I moved to LA, as well as Chicago to southern Utah on my own when I decided to volunteer for a long weekend at an animal sanctuary there. Chicago/LA was about 29 hours each way. I don't know...I like the silence and playing music and listening to radio. I would have Mr. krista with me now but he sleeps a lot and doesn't really talk so it would be about the same.I drove from Arizona to Chicago and it's 2 good 14 hour days in the car. I can't imagine driving from Atlanta to Seattle. It would be beautiful I bet, but unless you have things to do along the way I just think I'd go insane.

No shtick, opened the thread and this was the post it took me to.This new board upgrade is GREAT!!!what happened to the new blackdot?
Hmmm, good point. When I routed it, it showed going straight through South Dakota and all of Montana. That sounds pretty awful. There was a slightly longer "Southern" route that had a bit of Colorado and Utah instead...has to be better than Montana. We were too poor to fly much so we drove from Texas to Maine several times and Texas to Idaho and Minnesota once each. My drive to Oregon took 4 days and doing it alone got to be a bit much. Frick Wyoming in particular. The remoteness and nothingness was overwhelming.
