Didn't know about UHaul. We looked at craigslist and found some for $40/hour for the loading, and we also thought about just going the Home Depot day-worker route. Will check out U-Haul.
Wow, maybe mine aren't so bad. Got one for $8300 today and am awaiting the second. This wouldn't seem so bad but WE HAVE NO STUFF since moving back to the country. Really, a couple of beds, a couple of TVs, a couple of couches...not the years of stuff most people would have nor the tons of stuff we got rid of before moving. Just seemed outlandish. Old Krista (no comments) would have just paid without thinking about it, but this is not your grandfather's Krista.

Apparently there is some tariff issue with a PA intrastate move that makes it expensive. The $2500 company is shipping my stuff on a big truck with other loads and can only promise me delivery between feb 26-28 right now, but will know the real date by feb 20. The other company would move m stuff alone and deliver the day after packing.Didn't know about UHaul. This is true. I'm sick that I am paying all this to move, then paying high rent for a house, only likely to move in 12-18 months when I buy a house. I'm not in the position to qualify for a mortgage with a new job and close on a house in less than a month right now.

it's a moving service. they deliver a big box, you put your stuff in it, they move the box, then you unload your stuff.

This is what I was thinking. Why not just sell the stuff you have on craigslist then buy new stuff when you get to Seattle? Throw your clothes and a few personal effects in the car and ROAD TRIP!!!

Lol...yeah check it out. I've used them on a local move and would use again. My buddy used them for cross country move once I think. Worth looking into.

Truck is $1400.
Definitely thought about that. Since we have so little and are not connected to it (not like when I got rid of the rest of my stuff in August) we could just start over, mostly, but #######IT I hate buying mattresses. That is the biggest factor; they are so damn expensive and such a pain and I love the two we bought.

I'd just look into it as an option but don't know if it's the best option for you. I drove from Texas to Oregon...but all I owned back then was clothes, fabulous hair, books on tape and unbridled enthusiasm. My parents shipped my giant speakers.

Oh, I'll definitely look into it tomorrow. Thanks for the recommendation (you too, Aaron). Other than Nica I have never been in control of my own move so really don't know much, or anything really, about choosing how to move. I guess as great as the cross-country trek sounds (I've never been to South Dakota!) it might not be the ideal time to do it. I really have an almost endless capacity for driving. Can easily do 1000+ miles per day (actually actually true). Not ever being able to sleep is a big plus in this instance.

Agreed. I drove 17 hours in a move once. That was my limit, though.

I've done Chicago to LA and back on my own when I moved to LA, as well as Chicago to southern Utah on my own when I decided to volunteer for a long weekend at an animal sanctuary there. Chicago/LA was about 29 hours each way. I don't know...I like the silence and playing music and listening to radio. I would have Mr. krista with me now but he sleeps a lot and doesn't really talk so it would be about the same.

We were too poor to fly much so we drove from Texas to Maine several times and Texas to Idaho and Minnesota once each. My drive to Oregon took 4 days and doing it alone got to be a bit much. Frick Wyoming in particular. The remoteness and nothingness was overwhelming.

No shtick, opened the thread and this was the post it took me to.
drove Chicago to Seattle in summer and then Seattle to Chicago in winter.
The summer drive was awesome because it stays light until about 9 or even 10 in some places so you get to see a ton. Also the time zone changes are nice going West because you get more daytime.
The winter drive kind of sucked because it gets dark so early, and driving East means you lose another hour when the time zone changes.
I enjoyed the experience overall though. Would be less fun driving a big Uhaul though I think.

Hmmm, good point. When I routed it, it showed going straight through South Dakota and all of Montana. That sounds pretty awful. There was a slightly longer "Southern" route that had a bit of Colorado and Utah instead...has to be better than Montana.
