My wife's away on a business trip. Before she left, I called her into the kitchen and calmly explained that after 8.5 years, I think it's time that she gets one free pass.

Instead of being grateful or politely refusing it because I'm the only one for her blah blah blah, she immediately starts yelling at me because she thinks I'm angling for a pass. Women are the worst.

Hey Abe. I asked this in the cable cutters thread but not getting a response. Are integrated graphics from intel and amd good enough for htpc and which do you prefer? Ordering a motherboard today.

Amtrak is awesome. We're planning a trip to visit friends up and down the East Coast in August, and I'm really looking forward to taking Amtrak when we can. Love train trips.

If you have done so so far, stay out of the Ham thread. His longer update just now is the worst thing I've ever read.

Every update he posts with details runs my head through the Rolodex of clients I've had with deceased children suing just to get some kind of peace. I really wish I were a better human being in the moments, but it makes me so angry I just want blood for his family's sake.

I believe I just felt a twinge of empathy for lawyers. It was fleeting so I can't be sure.

I couldn't eat dinner tonight thinking about Chad and his family.

My daily routine is to leave for work around dawn. I have a nanny/cook who arrives at 6 to cook Chloe breakfast - invariably, pancakes - and I cut out around 4 or 5 to pick up my daughter from Afterschool. Left early today. Her teacher was there organizing - I rarely see her since I don't do drop off and dismissal is a few hours before I normally pick up - so I took pictures of her and my daughter. Pretty terrific K teacher, really lucky. Instead of heading straight home I let her play in the sprinklers in the park for 90 minutes. Threw off the nightly routine but I didn't care. She got to bed later than normal. Instead of me reading, she wanted to read aloud (she's moved up several levels and she's pretty proud she can read beyond sight words now). Such a sweet girl.

Called my 15 y.o. son and talked WC for 45 minutes.

Then I cried. A lot.

I've dramatically changed my mindset when I'm with my kids now (hopefully to hold on to moving forward) to be as present as possible when I'm home and they're awake. No phone, no computer... although the World Cup is hard to avoid, I'm avoiding it unless it's with my son (who just turned 7!). I've wasted a lot of time around them not really being with them.

Ham's story- and I got to the point where I just can't even look in the thread any more- has completely gutted me. I am fairly certain if it was me, I would either withdraw into an angry useless hole or just walk around like an exposed socket kneedeep in water electrocuting anybody who waded in nearby. I know, I would not be able to handle this, and I worry that my marriage wouldn't either. So absolutely horrible for him and his family. :(
