We won't really know anything for sure until he talks to his doctor tomorrow, but there are a lot of good signs right now:

1. It's Stage III. Stage III is 99% survivable assuming the cancer hasn't spread (this is the real concern at this point I think)

2. They took 12 tissues samples of the prostate and only 3 contained cancerous cells. I have no idea if this is actually a good sign or not, but it sounds like it should be a good sign.

3. My dad has routinely been getting checked every 6 months, so it can't be any older than that, which is good I think.

All in all it sounds most likely that it will be unpleasant for him (I can't imagine the treatment is fun) but relatively not dangerous - assuming it hasn't spread.

Thanks for all the kind words. This thing has me pretty shook up. We have luckily enough to not have to deal with anything like this among our immediately family, and as silly as it sounds for a 37-year old to say this I think I still had that kid mentality that figured my dad would live forever. So yeah. Tomorrow at 1pm we'll all know more, but it's looking positive for a negative.

But, on the flip side, this one has a very good recovery rate and is very common. My dad was diagnosed with severe prostate cancer well over 10 years ago. They removed his completely. He has been cancer free and is a beacon of health now. Will be 70 in October and is doing great.

And obviously the last thing on your mind, but you mind want to go get checked yourself just in case. After my post vasectomy followup, my urologist told me if there was any history of it in my family to start getting checked now (I'm 35)

Oh yeah, I've been getting checked every other year for a decade. I've come to enjoy our little game of 'poke' at the Dr.'s office. I even tell him 'no glove this time'.

I came inside after spending four hours building a retaining wall. I then proceeded to drink three beers very quickly without having eaten in several hours and I was dehydrated before I drink said beers. Woukd it be wise to go back out and try to work anymore today? My mom is tough as nails. Raised on a farm, one of 14 kids, constant manual labor projects around the house, etc. I just had a chance to talk to her one on one. She's a complete wreck. So that's neat.
