You guys are missing the point. Of course picking up a putt that's not conceded results in the loss of the hole. When that doesn't matter is when you've already lost the hole. Chet was correct that when he missed the putt the hole was over. Don originally thought otherwise and made a big stink. Technically, one could surmise that when Don said "You got a 5 and we got a 4" that he had conceded the putt. But if still in the hole I would never pick up until I hear "that's good".

Don is a grade A #####. Golf can bring the best and worst out of people.
I think you're probably right, but let's get a ruling from Lou Loomis to be sure.

Just curious as someone who knows very little about golf or wagers: what does Calcutta money mean?
its an auction where anyone has the chance to bid on teams. you usually have the opportunity to buy back half of your own team.
Total size of the pool was ~$150k.
Of course it was.
I have no reason to lie about this.
You have no reason to tell the truth either.

I am not going to get into this with you. If you don't believe me, move on--I don't care.

With him coming out and accusing you of being a cheater, it sounds to me like you have that reputation maybe?

Do you get lucky and find your ball still playable 99% of the time when it's obviously heading OB?

I'm not being a ####, just saying there are guys like that in my Monday night beer league.. and the stakes are virtually nothing.

Not at all. Based on my performance in this tournament last year and other games, there's no chance I'd be accused of this. In fact, I probably would have received the most honest golfer award if there were one.

There is a team like this that's played for the last 4+ years. The guest is a former LB at FSU and is a ####. I've never played against them, but my guest did last year and overheard the member telling the FSU LB to drop a ball when he couldn't find it. 4 years ago, the LB "bumped" a 60yo man after the LB was confronted about finding another ball. I don't know why they're allowed to play.

There were 48 teams broken down into 8 flights of six teams each. Flight A contained the six teams with the lowest combined indexes; flight B contained teams 7-12 etc.
side rant: I played in a Member-Guest like this a few weeks back and I have to say its a terrible format if the clubs goal is to award the teams that play the best. for example, my partner and I shot net 62 the first day but halved two matches, and then shot a net 64 the next day and lost two matches. Both net scores were low in our flight for each day. We ended up halving and losing our two matches the last day with a net 66. We had the lowest net score in our flight (192, -24 under par) yet finished dead last. We cleaned up on our team side bets for almost $400/each and won a couple hundred more for our low net scores the first two days but still..... Match play is just as much about how the team you're playing against is playing as it is how you're playing.

I have another Member/Guest this weekend that uses Stableford scoring. The first 2 days, we only count the low score out of our two balls, and the last day is worth double points as both balls count. Its a much better guage of who played well and awards those who do. Just you and your partner against the course.

Jesus - I couldn't get all the way through this so I'm sure I missed some good advice.

- As you said, you messed up by not knowing where your shots were and picking up without being given the putt. At the point you picked up your putt -- YOU LOSE, be mad at yourself.

- So he discovers you had a shot, he didn't need to throw a fit because you had already picked up. If you just acknowledge that fact - all becomes good again. You way over-reacted and clearly had an attitude about the guy prior ...deserved or not.

- Sandbaggers are an unfortunate part of the member/guest deal. As a member of the club the pro needs to be more diligent about him acquiring that handicap. It is delicate - but that is part of his job. It is incredibly satisfying to beat those ####### cheaters though. You could have said "takes one to know one" though.

Calcutta's can get pretty big. My club is pretty cheap. And ours gets over $40K
Club down the street raised ~$475k with a very famous althete's team going for $75k. They had around 100 teams. We had 48 teams and the highest priced team was $15k.

I was told this raised the attention of the feds and next year, the club will in no way be affiliated with the auction. i.e. They won't conduct the auction, collect the money etc. It will have to be at someone's house with cash only the night of.

It was brutal. I played as poorly as possible and contributed almost nothing to our team. I was ready to throw my clubs in the lake.

Last year, I never made my nut in the weekly members' game (stableford)--I played 3x.

Before you clarified about your putter, I understood why you picked up when you were 6 inches out.

A couple of holes later, he tried to make small talk. I looked at him and said, "Don, I don't appreciate how you handled the situation. None of my friends would have handled it remotely closely to how you did. I don't have any respect for you. I don't like you. I don't want to talk to you ever again unless it's directly related to the match at hand."

Yeah right then if I was Don I would have told Chet to go make love to himself.

Big fan of the tour velvets. The white ones are like marshmallows

What you've got to do is cut the hamstring on the back of his leg right at the bottom. He'll never play golf again, because his weight displacement goes back, all his weight is on his right foot, and he'll push everything off to the right. He'll never come through on anything. He'll quit the game.

Just curious as someone who knows very little about golf or wagers: what does Calcutta money mean?
its an auction where anyone has the chance to bid on teams. you usually have the opportunity to buy back half of your own team.
There were 48 teams broken down into 8 flights of six teams each. Flight A contained the six teams with the lowest combined indexes; flight B contained teams 7-12 etc.

The night before the first match, each team was auctioned to the highest bidder. If you didn't buy your team at the auction, you were allowed to buy half from the succesful bidder. 85% of the money stayed in the respective flight (75% to 1st and 25% to second) and 15% went to the shootout pool. The winners of each flight competed for the shootout pool after the matches were completed.

Total size of the pool was ~$150k.
Pretty sure the biggest altercations during club play is due to Calcutta. There was a super high end club around here that had a near 7 figure calcutta. It's split all up like flights so not sure what the total payout is on each.

One guy wanted to buy his team, but someone bid him up to insane levels, talking like 100k for the team. srs.

Before the tourney the team wanted to buy half the team and the guy says no. It's not mandatory, but always a courtesy that is usually extended.

Well on the back nine of the tourney they were up by enough that it was over and he starts calling the guy. He still says no.

Owner drives up to the tourney and watched the team go ocho ocho ocho to finish out what would have been a half mil payday go to zero. And a bag of golf clubs ended up in one of the dude's windshields, but not sure whose.

And thus ended the fun for everyone.

Anyone have a serious answer? I agree that neither of us handled the situation optimally; however, he was by far the bigger #######.

Also, he's a sandbagger. 1 over through 7 playing to a 15 and doing the same thing in his other matches.
Man i hate these people. You said there was money involved so he was, by the book, probably correct but come on.....Typically it is assumed that anything short of 24" is good. Had he given you putts earlier in the match? Had a taken a freebie earlier in the match? I would honest let it go but never play with him again.

Pigs get fat; hogs get slaughtered. :2cents:

Just curious as someone who knows very little about golf or wagers: what does Calcutta money mean?
its an auction where anyone has the chance to bid on teams. you usually have the opportunity to buy back half of your own team.

ours is mandatory. if you want half of your team, they've got to sell it to you. I hope ours doesn't get any bigger. we already have a member's friend who's a cop escort the money back to someone's house with a safe. we have it on club property, but club is not involved outside of that.

Yep. Calcutta bidding starts and anyone not associated with the club or the event is quickly asked who they are and what they are doing in the club.
