Greatest Video Game Draft 2011 (1 Viewer)

12.11 - Braid - Puzzle/Xbox 360

I'm fudging the "games I've actually played" rule a bit as I've only played the demo of this game. But even that sucked me in and I'm sure I'll get to it someday soon.

The atmosphere and melancholy mood combined with truly unique puzzle solving made this game one of the highest rated puzzle games ever.

Edit: Dr. Mario will have to be moved to the 5th generation category (N64).
Andy, I already have you owning Dr. Mario as your puzzle. Where would you like Braid to be or switch dr mario?

Write-ups to come, but I'm throwing strategy out the window and grabbing 2 badass games that should' ve been taken a long time ago.

12.13 F-Zero (SNES, 1990) 4th Generation

13.01 Blades of Steel (NES, 1988) Flex

F-Zero might be an even better choice than my current game in the racing slot (N4S), but I think F-Zero can hold it's own in the 4th gen category, so I think I'll take a shot there. It seemed like, if you had a SNES, you had F-Zero and loved it. It was one of my 3 or 4 favorite SNES games and it had crazy replay value. Besting best times is fun in all racing games, but it felt even more fun in F-Zero. I had a blast playing it as recently as 2004.

Blades was a true classic. If it's not obvious, I spent my childhood playing sports video games. I spent tons of time on the NES and SNES, but I never beat single Mario game and I hated Zelda (probably not wise to discredit myself like that). For me, that time was about Tecmo, Pro Wrestling, Tyson, Double Dribble, and of course, Blades of Steel. It was so exciting to be able to play a tournament or a season in single player, then be able to face-off against your buddies. Like those others, Blades was fairly simple, but there was plenty of strategy behind those simple controls. Accessible and loads of fun.

I feel comfortable in saying the Blades reigned supreme over the hockey genre for the next 6 years and there might still only be one hockey game that was better.

Blades also has the added bonus of being one hell of a fighting game too. Nothing like being in a tight hockey battle (or getting your butt kicked), then taking a break the pummel each other.

See the edit. Dr. Mario goes in 5th generation as an N64 game.

I have been sniped all but like 3 rounds. :lmao:

13.03 - Shodan - Best Villain

Going to have to completely break my rule here as Shodan is just too good of a villain to be left on the board. (Am I missing that she was picked before?)

She is characterized by her megalomania and chaotic, discordant speech. Her words are accompanied by stuttering, fluctuating voice pitch, shifts of timbre, and the presence of three voices speaking the same words with the constituent voices alternately lagging behind and leading ahead, as well as computer glitches resembling a sound card malfunction.

is Dr Mario the same as Dr Mario 64??? There is actually a difference between the two...

13.04 - Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (PS2) - 6th Generation

13.05 - Super Mario Galaxy (Wii) - Platformer

13.06 - The Simpsons (Arcade) - Beat 'Em Up

I don't know if the Simpsons was on anyone's radar, but this was the first game I thought of when you guys gave me the description of this category. Loved the graphics, multiplayer capability, sound effects (especially homer), loved the combo moves. Spent way too much money on continues in this game. Would have been bummed if someone got this before me.

NERD! :goodposting:No there's not. Give it a rest already. It's exactly the same concept, just different graphics, as you go from platform to platform.
I was just asking... sheesh...and Dr. Mario 64 has a whole "story mode" with characters from Wario Land 3 and stuff... Plus like 4 different multi-player modes...Dr. Mario just has normal puzzle mode and a basic multi-player mode...

Reminds me of a conversation I had last night with someone...
I know. Andy, I don't know much about Dr. Mario, but according to the wiki the N64 one introduced a single-player story mode and 3-player/4-player competitive modes. In my mind, that makes them different games.

13.07 Illusive Man ( Villain)

"Though he's technically one of Shepard's allies, only a fool would trust the Illusive Man. This puppet master claims to look after humanity's interests, but his devious methods and xenophobic agenda make him a dangerous man to be around - even if he says he's on your side."

I don't think he's even human.

Yeah. My bad. I'm sorry I brought that tone in here from another thread. :goodposting: :wall:
Andy did draft the N64 version. I'm not familiar with it to say how different it is myself. I just know I took Dr Mario off my list even though they were for different console because they are still too similar to be drafted in the same category. I just wouldn't want to be the one drafting it later. My opinion. If the judges say they are different enough to allow for another version to be allowed, then go for it. It's your pick.

10.11 - Dr. Mario - Puzzle/Nintendo 64And I thought Tetris was addicting... :goodposting:
Here's your original Dr. Mario post with no edits Andy. Did you intend for it to be on the N64 or GameBoy/NES? Right now the Dr. Mario on N64 is not actually a real game.
With Nintendo's naming of everything [game] 64, I think this is a gimme, IMO. C'mon. He meant Dr Mario 64. Just like there's no Superman 64. It's just Superman.

 I was just asking for clarification sake... if he said N64 in his pick thread its not even the point... It just surprised me and I didn't even realize there was a Dr. Mario on N64...

Pollard with first pick who would you have taken?
Probably Super Mario Bros. Obviously, Pac-Man makes a great #1 pick, but I think Mario was more influential. Pac-Man was a cultrual icon, but the arcade industry was doing just fine before it showed up. The depth of the arcade category is a testament to that. SMB changed gaming in ways that Pac Man just doesn't compare, imo.

For those that have played System Shock 2... Is it necessary to play the first to enjoy the second?

I'm not sure I have the patience to play through the 1st with it's sub-par graphics no matter how good the story.
