21.09 Counter-Strike: Source, PC, First-Person Shooter

Counter-Strike was originally developed as a Half-Life mod by Minh "Gooseman" Le and Jess Cliffe. The game quickly gained a following in the mod community and those at Valve took notice and purchased the game, making it a full-fledged retail game. Counter-Strike quickly became the most popular and top played first-person shooter game in the world.

After release of Half-Life 2 and the Source engine, Counter-Strike was retooled and remade to use the new engine. The original gameplay mechanics are exactly the same and no changes were made other than the game physics. Of course, some maps are different, since Source .bsp (map file) files are different than those using the Quake engine that the original Half-Life and Counter-Strike used.

For those not familiar with the game, Counter-Strike: Source pits a team of counter-terrorists against a team of terrorists in a series of rounds. Each round is won by either completing an objective (such as detonating a bomb or rescuing hostages) or by eliminating all members of the opposing team. Depending on how well you did in the round, you will earn money, which is put toward upgrading and buying weapons and ammunition for later rounds.

I was thinking about taking it in the early teens but decided against it. Don't really like it and I would rather have other games in its categories.

Looking down the draft board, I see all these weak, antiquated, 8-bit, childish games that are picked picked purely out of nostalgia. CS is legendary in the PC multiplayer community. This is like Aaron Rodgers falling to the 24th pick.

I guess its really if your a PC or console guy. Out of my main group of friends there is one PC guy. He's iffy on Counter Strike and the other 12-14 guys haven't even heard of it and they are big time gamers.

I'm a console guy for the most part, but I've spent more time playing Counter-Strike and Diablo 2 than any other games.

I already deleted my Master Chief writeup, but basically, this is the gist of it. I was looking for a character in the Main Character genre that people identified with video games. Pac-Man does that. Master Chief does that. People outside of video games don't know who Nathan Drake is. I'm not a Halo fan and most people can tell you that, but he is about the only character left that is synonymous with gaming.

I must really be out of it, because I have never even heard of Master Chief until this draft.

10. larry_boy_44

11. rikishiboy - i have

12. Mario Kart

13. BlueDredSo

ROUND 22

1. BlueDredSo

2. Mario Kart

3. rikishiboy

4. larry_boy_44

5. Slax

And, Master Chief is on TLC or some channel with all those cooking shows.

You said you lived in Japan, correct? If this is true, then I can see why Master Chief isn't as well known as it is here. The XBox brand isn't as accepted in Japan as it is over here in the US. Even if you don't know the name, Master Chief, you'll likely recognize his likeness. And larryboy hasn't picked yet? (Mario Kart is thinking of Master Chef. I make the same joke sometimes too, though.)

The problem is that Master chief is recognizable but not by name. I had no idea what his name was before this draft. I knew what he looked like though

ask anyone who mario and link are and there is no question. Same with Pac man

And Lara Croft

biggamer3: Racing franchises can only take once per franchise. Gran Turismo IV was taken at 2.3, so the rest of the series is off the table. Sorry. :lmao:

Duke Nukem way more known than master chief

Interestingly enough, I just showed my girlfriend, who is not a gamer, pictures of Link, Duke Nukem, and Master Chief. She correctly identified both Link and Duke Nukem by name (which surprised me, because I don't think I would've been able to ID Duke Nukem), and identified Master Chief as "that guy from Halo...does he have a name?"

The test would be MY wife. lol I wonder how many she could identify. I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna gather some pictures and see how many she can identify by likeness. See if she can name them and tell me what game they come from. I'll post results after the draft. I don't want it to affect judging.

To her credit, she did play her share of video games as a child, but hasn't played anything since probably the early 2000s. I believe she had played Duke Nukem a number of times growing up, which probably explains that one. Why parents would allow an 11-year old girl to play Duke Nukem is beyond me, though....

I played Duke Nukem as a side scroller. Never played the FPS. Master Chief is immensely more popular than Duke Nukem.
To be fair, Duke did have some great lines in the FPS, even if he did have to steal his most famous one from Rowdy Roddy Piper.
Yea my nephew told me that line was from Duke Nukem and I was like "thats impossible because Rowdy Roddy Piper said that in They Live way before there was a Duke Nukem."

Well, I gave my wife the test. Out of a list of 35 main characters (all of those drafted and 14 that I had on the list that hadn't been drafted), she was able to recognize 17 names by looking at a picture of the character. She blanked on Andrew Ryan, but could tell me that he created Rapture and was the main character for Bioshock. I didn't give her credit, but that's pretty close. So, that's 17.5. She was able to name 27 of the games out of the 35. I was impressed. She does pay attention to what I play after all.

Oh, and if you're wondering. Out of the ones drafted, she hadn't heard of 5 of them at all.

You best treat that lady right tonight. Tell her Mario Kart gave you permission to rev her engines up and take a spin around Nub Island.

Does she hang around when we have been playing the Lara Croft game? If she was, there might have been a few awkward moments in the background if she was listening to your play by play.

So, Master Chief is the character that's the face of a console that's so legendary that people recognize his picture, but can't name him (can we even be sure people don't think they're looking at the FOX robot?)?

If this category is going by popularity, wouldn't that place him somewhere behind Sonic the Hedgehog? At least the gen pop knows his name.

If we aren't going by that and it's been freely admitted that he had virtually no character development, I don't see all the fuss.

Great 20th round pick, but I don't see how it's a top 5 category pick.

We have lost Slax for the evening. Although, if he does it right, his lady will be sleeping by the end of the hour. So, we may get him back by 11:00 central. No pit stops or refueling.

No. She was playing on Facebook during that. Although, she may have heard a bit of it. If she did, it doesn't worry me. It's nothing she hasn't heard before.

I never said he was a top 5 category pick; I said I projected him to go early, potentially even top 5. Regardless, he's a steal this late.

for sure one of those is mine...

21.10

I don't have my list, its super late, and I'm super tired, so I'll just go with the game I was planning on picking at some point from here out anyways:

Final Fantasy X, 6th Generation

the last great Final Fantasy game...

btw, my rankings for American released Console Final Fantasy games:

1. Final Fantasy VI

2. Final Fantasy IV

3. Final Fantasy IX

4. Final Fantasy X

5. Final Fantasy VII

6. Final Fantasy

7. all the other crap since X

if anyone was curious...

21.11 Time to get Nostaligic for those of us that got the original Nintendo. For most of us that system came with none other than Duck Hunt. Who can forget that annoying dog laughing at you for letting those darn ducks fly away. This is my 3rd generation pick.

21.12 - Toejam and Earl - Genesis - Best Story

Two urban like alien youths crash on Earth and need to reclaim their space ship in order to leave Earth. Their spaceship is a bunch of pieces that form into a giant jukebox. Great story.
