Greatest Video Game Draft 2011 (1 Viewer)

26.11 - Super Sprint (1986) - Racing/Arcade

A fairly simple racing game with nice clean graphics, up to three players could drive simultaneously on a circuit against each other or against cars controlled by the computer. The circuits are viewed from above and always fit on the screen, so the game never scrolls. After three laps the winner advances to the next circuit. There were 8 circuits in total, but the game only ends if gamers can get to race 85 where the bonus Super Speedway circuit is played. As the player goes to higher levels, more and more obstacles appeared on the track, like oil puddles and tiny moving tornadoes. If the car touched them, the player lost control over the car for a short time while it is sliding and spinning. Driving into a wall with high speed or falling from one of the bridges destroyed the car, but a helicopter quickly appeared to replace it. You could customize your car by collecting wrenches that lay on the track. The player could exchange three of them for improved traction, better acceleration or handling.

Why do we have rules if we are not going to follow them. The atari 2600 Pac-Man is a port. It was horrible, but the original content was to be just like the arcade except the limitations of the hardware made it so it was not possible.
Can you explain why the map is different?I get that the hardware required the flashing ghosts, but the fact that you are navigating a different map in my mind makes it a different game, not a port. You wouldn't call Ms. Pac-Man a port of Pac-Man, would you?

It was horrible, but the original content was to be just like the arcade except the limitations of the hardware made it so it was not possible. So they had to cut corners and make changes. This happens all the time with ports. Its just the Pac-Man one was the worst possibly ever attempted. This would open up hundreds of other ported games for everyone even though your not allowed to dfrat them.
It wasn't due to hardware limitations. Wikipedia may say that, but that's not why the game was bad. If it was, then why was Ms Pac-man light years better? Answer: They looked at what he had after 3 or so weeks and saw what he did "alpha build" and said "that's good enough, let's ship that" and did. With the name "Pac-Man" on the box, they thought they could do no wrong. Truth is that Tod gave them the alpha build and told them it wasn't ready and they turned around and sold that. It wasn't the final game. It had nothing to do with hardware limitations. That's just the PR BS that people bought into in the 80's and still drag into today. There are several books written by those who actually were in the business and they tell the real story. You should read them. The stuff that anyone can edit on Wikipedia isn't always the truth, ya know.

"My name is Ezio Auditore da Firenze, and like my father and grandfathers before me, I am an Assassin." Ezio Auditore da Firenze.

26.05 Ezio Auditore da Firenze, Main Character

Ezio Auditore is the main character* of both Assassin's Creed 2 and Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood. Adding very much other info would spoil the game, so I'll leave it at that, but I will leave you with the following videos below. I hope they will not spoil too much. I hope they help introduce you to Ezio, if you are not yet familiar.

*Spoiler

Desmond Miles is technically the main character of the Assassin's Creed games, however you play as Ezio Auditore for the majority of the time in game as you are in the animus. Most players of the game still don't relate or care about Desmond, therefore, I'm counting Ezio as the main character.

And for my final pick of the draft, and certainly the least...

27.09 Plumbers Don't Wear Ties, 3DO, Worst Thing To Be Released and Actually Called a Game

Ok, I know. This one is probably too obscure for most of you to have heard of, so bare with me. It's crap-tastic. And you know I'm gonna explain and show you why. First, let's look at the game box.

Game Box Art

"Plays like a game... feels like a MOVIE!!!"

The front of the box says that it features: A Plumber, which is good, since the name IS "Plumbers Don't Wear Ties". A Daddy's Girl. Chickens. Crazed Yuppies, can't have a game without those. Evil Bosses, there has to be a villain in the game, right. Shower Scenes, so that's gotta be fun. And Race Cars.

The back of the box says:

"Plumbers have everything: Greed, sex, spirituality, white-knuckled chases, shameful propositions, a nun, humor, true love, jaded love, taut action, comedy, a bad guy, a good guy, a hero, spine-tingling suspense, a hot babe, a damsel in distress, and a hollywood ending!"

Now. The game. Who better to give a demonstration of this pile of trash than the Angry Video Game Nerd, himself. Take it away, James.

AVGN Review of Plumbers Don't Wear Ties - http://www.gametrailers.com/video/angry-vi...rewattack/52921 (As always, AVGN is NSFW due to language) - Review starts around 3:30, he reviews the 3DO a bit first

And a BONUS treat. You can play this game now for yourself in its entirety for free! Yes Free! On YouTube! Here's the link to the start of the game:

(I should be a disclaimer here: This game is rated M for Mature. There's no nudity (sorry), but it's also probably NSFW.)

Flex Video Game(1) Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven (PC) Flex

"The game was well received by critics and gamers upon release as a more realistic and serious Grand Theft Auto-styled game. Such was the realism that unless a mission was timed, many found that actually obeying the road rules proved to be faster than speeding, as the latter would more likely result in accidents and injuries. Mafia contains a much bigger city to explore than most video games of the time, with multiple forms of available transport in addition to an expansive countryside. IGN gave the game a rating of 9.2/10 while GameSpot described the PC version as "one of the best games of the year". and rated it at 9.3/10.Game Informer compared it favorably to Grand Theft Auto III, and said, "From the living city in which you reside, to the incredibly realistic vehicles, this title has the heart and soul of a blockbuster".

Flex Video Game(2) Socom II: US Navy SEALs( PS2) Flex

Dirt 2 360 Racing- very good racing game with great reviews

Syphon Filter- Playstation Flex. I absolutely loved playing this game 10 years ago, was a lot of fun

Mad props to Madshot and all the others who made this draft fun and all

Good stuff here, another reason why FBG is the bomb

Final Draft Line-up:

SlaX

Arcade(1) NBA Jam TE (4.05) - write-up - video

Arcade(2) Daytona USA (14.05) - write-up -

We'll see how that squad fares. I'm happy with it either way. Other than Worst Game, I'd be happy to be stuck playing these games for the rest of my life.

I would like to thank Madshot for an awesome draft. He did a super job of organizing, editting and still participating and keeping up to make his own picks. It really was the Greatest Video Game Draft!

Ditto. Madshot did an awesome job with this thing. I haven't participated in any of the other drafts in here, but it went really smoothly. Thumbs up to all the drafters as well for making that happen.

And a BONUS treat. You can play this game now for yourself in its entirety for free! Yes Free! On YouTube! Here's the link to the start of the game:

I paused about 50 seconds into the clip and wondered why you didn't select this game in the "best game ever" category...

This thread caused me to go out and pick up the Ultimate Genesis Collection for the PS3. $17 for 40 Genesis games, including 6 Sonic games, Phantasy Star 1-4, Streets of Rage 1-3, Golden Axe 1-3, and much more.

We'll see how it plays, but it seems like a steal. I wanted to get something the wife might want to play so she won't hate my PS3 so much (she loved old school platformers, but has no interest in any new games). I can check out a bunch of these games that I never played back in the day.

Ok. So the missing picks are rikishiboy x3 and Yo Mama x2.

Is that all?
Yes. Although I have 8 spots left on the category charts so I'm missing 3 selections somewhere. Check if your games are in each category people.
Would it be okay to start discussing games that weren't picked yet? I know there's five picks to go, but does it really matter much?
Go for it.

One thing is that Atari didn't want to spend the extra money on an 8K cartridge which was now available, so they required a 4K cartridge to be used. The Ms. Pac Man cart used the 8K version. The main problem was that it was rushed to market. The Ms. Pacman atari 2600 version was a port and I don't think anyone would disagree with that even though the maze was different as well although closer to the original and the dots were wafers just like the 2600 Pacman.

I'm not in this draft nor am I a judge, but I think this is a port. A horrible port, but a port none the less. People bought this game expecting it to be a port, not some new different pacman game. There were some other horrible ports on the 2600 as well, but they're still ports. (I.E. Defender, and others I didn't want to spotlight)

26.08 - Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box (DS) - puzzle

27.06 - Total Annihilation (PC) - Multiplayer

Great draft everyone.

All right, figured out what was not entered in yet. Only thing left is rikishiboy's 3 picks. If you want a category moved now would be the time.

Games on my shortlist:

Wave Race 64

Anything Wing Commander. Wasn't this a hugely popular PC game series?

Star Wars Battlefront 1 & 2/Republic Commando: All really fun & simple multi player games. And Commando isn't a too bad campaign either.

Some Apple games I liked:

Taipan!

Hardball!

Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord

Arcade Games

Time Pilot

Burgertime

Qix

Mach 3
Yep, Wing Commander was a hugely popular & successful game series. So much so it had a horrible movie made out of it.

Some notable games that weren't picked:

Arcade: Tron, Gorf, Lunar Lander. Missle Command. Tron in particular would have scored well. Missle command too.

RPG: Fallout, Daggerfall, Morrowind, Icewind Dale, Wizardry, Eye of the Beholder (a bunch of those old Gold Box games, really).

Strategy: Heroes of Might and Magic 3 (best of the Heroes games - top 3 strategy game if I were judge), Master of Magic, Age of Wonders 2 - Sahdow Magic, Master of Orion, Myth the Fallen Lords (and Myth 2)

Horror: Sanitarium, Phantasmagoria

It's probably depends on age, but the overall console slant in this draft was really evident (and surprising to me). At least some of the above are glaring omissions (imho). I agree these days, PC gaming is nothing to write home about, but man, the mid to late 90's were incredible.

Edit - surprised the Thief games didn't make it in somewhere.

My RPG category I was deciding between Lost Odyssey, Morrowind, or Fallout. My last Arcade spot I went with Area 51 and had Tron as the backup pick.

It's a disc. Got it used at GameStop. I tried to find something similar in the PS Store, but all I saw was Sonic Adventure for $10

I went back and forth on whether to pick Fallout 1 or 2, but eventually settled for 2. Both were excellent games. Ever since playing Fallout 3, I've been wanting to go back and play them again. But like all other games, it's a time thing.

2 neat stories about FO2:After Fallout came out, I was a regular on the interplay messageboards. A group of us banded together to get a spammer banned (at that time, messageboards didn't have the ability to ban people - you actually had to call the offending person's ISP, send proof, etc, and they "might" suspend him). We ended up forming a group / gaming community, and one of the developers rewarded the group with a special encounter in fallout 2 (Unwashed Villagers vs the spammer). 12 of us got our online alias in (I'm Night Owl in the encounter.)

They also solicted new perk ideas for Fallout 2. I came up w/ comprehension. Dave Hendee (one of the designers on FO and FO2) loved it, and put it in. It's still in the current games, which is kinda neat.

True stories both.

The games I wanted to take next were

Twilight Princess

WWF No Mercy

Super Castlevania IV

Metroid Fusion

Super Dodge Ball

Company of Heroes

American McGee's Alice (thought about taking for suspense/horror)

Wanted Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit (1998 original) or Need For Speed: Most Wanted but it was taken off the board before I could take it.

Am I the only fan of Ken Griffey Jr. Baseball for SNES? My cousin and I played that game A TON.

I know the Sports category was deep, but was kind of surprised this wasn't taken.

I liked it... I think I still have it, in fact...the problem is that there are too many sports games, really...
