Guardians of the Galaxy -- tracking at 100% on RottenTomatoes (1 Viewer)

Speculation on the internet is that the cocoon in the Collectors collection contained Adam Warlock (has recently been confirmed by the director) who is intimately tied to another of the Infinity Stones in the comics.

In the Howard the Duck scene, the cocoon is in the scene and has clearly been opened following the devastation to the collection. He probably will figure in prominently in the next Guardians movie.

Is Howard the Duck a superhero too? I just thought he was a wisecracking duck.
No superhuman powers. Trained in the martial arts well enough to hold his own. A bit of mystic ability which led Doctor Strange to teach him some spells and offer to train Howard, Howard refused. In general Howard is used to make social commentary or to send up the genre. He does have armor as well. When using it he is Iron Duck. It comes with flame throwers but not flight IIRC.

Well Adam was part of the Guardians.

What was the point of Howard the Duck at the end? Just something he collected?

That was just really random.
I was thinking the same thing, Didn't he say he was going to "get him" or something. I was so thrown off by HtD in a Marvel movie that I didn't catch what he said. Loved the flick, Most fun I've had at the movies in quite a while.
You do know that HtD is a Marvel character, right?
No?
didnt you play Lego Marvel? Hes one of the unlockable characters

Good lord, that's awful. I sure hope we've seen the last of him/it.

I doubt it. You don't make end credits if you don't have a future role generally. As I said with the expansion of Marvel into it's cosmic side Howard will be there somewhere. He has figured in some story lines that cross stuff we have seen. The bigger deal there was of course Adam Warlock but that was to be expected once you start playing with the Gems story lines.

How young would this be OK for? Thinking of taking my eight year old -- crazy?
If he saw any of the other Marvel Avenger based movies and those were fine for him, this should be too.

No nudity, no sex, handful of light swears and tons of comic book violence.
:goodposting:

My son makes 8 soon, and there was nothing objectionable at all for him in GoG. What swear words were in the movie, for better or for worse, were swear words my son had already come home with from the schoolyard.

The "comic book violence" could be more of an ethical problem for some families, though that's typically a case-by-case thing IMHO. To me, the violence was far enough within the realm of obvious fantasy that few school-age children would be disturbed.
Took my 9 year old yesterday. Other than the "100% ****" comment which he picked up on and repeated it was fine.

Luckily the painting comment even went over the heads of the two 15 year olds that I also took. Pretty obscure and definitely designed to go way over the heads of kids.

I read an article a while back so please understand that the below is me paraphrasing the story;

========================

James Gunn had completed the GOG script and sent it out for review.

They called a meeting where a bunch of people in a room gave their feed back.

Everyone almost universally loved it

One guy sat quietly in the corner not saying anything.

Gunn finally said "ok Joss, what is wrong?"

Weadon paused and said "look, this is great but something is missing. I was very happy when your were going to be the writer because I figured we would get a classic James Gunn scene of no action and people just sitting around talking. That is missing from the script and is needed."

Gunn took the advice and added in a scene

==================================

The article did not say what the scene was but I am thinking it may have been that awesome scene where they are all sitting in a circle talking about the plan and Rocket keeps translating for Groot (the scene which ends with them all standing and Rocket making the wise ### comment).

Great scene to add if indeed that was the one that was added.

There's no point at all except a snicker wink wink from Marvel to their core group of pimply fans.
Absolutely incorrect. Howard has been a mainstay of the cosmic side of Marvels Universe. I don't know if he will get a movie of his own but as the Universe expands we can expect to see him.
I hope not. Not a big fan. Maybe because of that god awful film in the 80s.

As for the scene implying anything, it didn't. He made a joke. The Collector shrugged wearily. The end. The whole point was to show us Howard the Duck for some inside haha. This wasn't Scarlett Witch and Quicksilver freaking out in a Hydra cell.

Only good things come from Joss Whedon having so much creative power in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He was their first round draft pick and all indicators are that they're treating him as such.

Wait what? We haven't seen Warlock yet, right? No, I'd pick up on that.

I'm not expecting him until Avengers 3 or at least the third phase of solo films. When/where ever the sixth gem pops up.

Yes they showed his cocoon open and empty in one of the Collectors cages. During the Howard the Duck scene.

Totally missed it. And that's WAY more important than showing Howard, imo.

Apparently they could do both and enough people saw it that the director confirmed what it was.

So the movie has grossed over 300 million between domestic box office(176 million) and overseas box office(138 million).

That was a great scene. One of the funniest scenes in the whole movie.

loved pretty much everything about this movie. all the characters were great. wasn't sure how good Batista would be, but he kinda nailed his part. and Rocket was perfect...instant classic character.

I loved the throwback music, the scenery, even Lee Pace. was hoping for a little more Benicio...

question for those who have seen it.

Gamora's half-sister (Thanos' daughter) made it out alive, right? I remember her falling off the big ship, landing on one of the fighter ships, and taking off. I don't remember her dying or anything, so she's still out there, right?

yes

My son came home with a starlord figure today

Was the end of thor 2 a set up for this movie. Just caught it today

Beta - Ray Bill can also be seen in a container as part of the Collector's collection.

One of my favorite characters, so is Adam Warlock.

I have a pretty solid theory for who Star-Lord's father is going to be in the next movie. Has nothing to do with this film and is different than the comic version but I'll throw in spoilers just in case:

A a few clues from the film:

When Peter's mom is dying she makes a few references to his father she says young Peter looks just like him, and also describes him as an Angel, composed of pure light.

At the end of the film when Nova Prime is telling Peter he's only half human, she says his father is something "very ancient" they hadn't seem on Xandar before.

Finally, as the Ravagers are leaving Xandar, Yondu makes a disparaging remark about Peter's as to why they didn't deliver him as a child as they were paid to do.

So piecing that together: Peter's father is an ancient character (or race but the comment was worded pretty carefully to suggest his father is ancient), looks like Peter, and while good hearted is also possibly has some questionable character

Who fits all that? Eros of Titan (AKA Starfox) . A few key facts:

Is a member of the race of Eternals, and younger brother of Thanos.

Has red hair, which both young and old Peter are shown to have in the film

From the description of Eros:

While his brother was captivated by Death, Eros loved life, and began visiting other systems for adventure and romance. Eros even visited Earth at least once, and was remembered in Earth's legends.
His primary power, aside from being an Eternal, is being able to stimulate pleasure in other beings... or pelvic sorcery in other words.

I always thought Starfox was a good shot at it. I think theres a good chance you're right, it just ties the GotG even closer to Thanos.

HtD is basically Ted (the bear)

I saw a 17 minute IMAX preview of it a few weeks ago. Those 17 minutes were better than any whole movie I've seen all year. This is THE movie your kids will love as Star Wars was to us. It feels like Star Wars meets Indiana Jones. I have tickets ready for Thursday night at 8:00 to take my kid. I CAN'T WAIT.
This was my exact first thought five minutes in. Star Wars meets Indiana Jones. That's not a bad thing.

Good theory. I thought about this as well. I also was curious about it possibly being the original Captain Marr-vel, as he was composed of light with the quantam bands. I think either could work, from a Thanos angle or a Kree angle. The only part that throws me is Yondu saying his father was "an ###".

Pretty sure it's Darth Vader.

This movie kicks ###. The only reason that people say Avengers is better is because Avengers combines all of the great brand name characters to great effect. (which in a sense does make it better for many people) I would argue, however, that GOTG is a more complete film experience. Personally, I teared up at a couple different points in the film, I thought the action set pieces rivaled any good action film, and the comedy was incredible. Chris Pratt is an incredibly gifted leading man, he has great comedic timing, while at the same time has the ability to project earnestness. The other actors in the ensemble were pretty great, but the one that really shocked me was Dave Bautista. I did not expect his character to be hilarious, he nailed it. I also rank this above Avengers because of the music. I admit, there are some people who do not care about music at all, but I do. The way they use the songs in this film is beyond impressive. Overall I would rate this a 9/10 and would implore anyone who is on the fence to go see it.

On a side note, because I am too lazy to look for the Netflix thread, I saw that 'Blue Ruin' is on there now. Anyone who likes movies should watch this now. It is a taut 90 minute thriller about a homeless guy's revenge plot that boomerangs back on him in a nasty way...I would also rate this a 9/10. You are welcome.

:lmao: wtf
I just lost my mother, so the opening scene made me a bit misty.
That's what I'm talking about...how can a truly caring person not tear up a bit when a kid loses his mother? Same deal with Finding Nemo and Bambi. If you are like most people and grew up liking your mother, it adds a little bit of heft to the story in my opinion.

You've got the MadMen logo, did you tear up when Draper took his kids back to the house where he grew up? I thought that was pretty powerful.
