HC Dan Campbell, DET (1 Viewer)

Week 11 Locker Room Speech

Game balls:
  • Everyone on offense (lots of team records including 645 yards, 38 first downs, +46 point differential)
  • Jared Goff 24/29 412 Yards 4 TDs
  • ARSB 11 targets 11-161 2 TDs
  • Kerby Joseph 7th interception
  • Jack Campbell 9 tackles 0.5 sacks (first career locker room game ball)
Dan Campbell's record since Halloween 2022
  • 31-9-0 .775
    (16-4-0 .800 at Ford Field)
Detroit's 29-8 regular season record in that same stretch ties the best 37-game span in franchise history.

(4x between Nov 1951 and Nov 1955; Detroit won titles in 1952, 1953, and lost the NFL Championship Game in 1954. Their 4th and last title came in 1957.)

Detroit has never started a season 9-1.

The first year in Detroit, they won their first 7 games by shutout, and started 10-0 in their first season in Detroit. They finished 10-3.

The following year the Lions went 7-3-2 to win the Western Division. They defeated the NYG 26-7 to claim their first World Championship, two months after the Tigers won their first World Series.

We're on to Indianapolis.

Stay humble, boys.

Campbell finally took all the criticism to heart this last week and did not try for one of those damn fake punts (which he is 7 for 9 on).

Lions updated DVOA numbers through Week 11:
  • Overall: 1st
  • Offense: 2nd
  • Pass O: 9th
  • Run O: 1st
  • Defense: 2nd
  • Pass D: 2nd
  • Run D: 5th
  • Special teams: 1st
In other to properly understand this, we need to start by recognizing:
  • all three of his hand-picked coordinators are genius level
  • his general manager delivered him first rate talent through the draft
  • the locker room and Allen Park is filled with inspirational leadership

    Strengths:
  • he gives good postgame locker room speeches
  • he speaks turnovers into existence in halftime sideline interviews
  • his in game management is questionable (despite quantitative evidence it's elite as he is BY FAR the leader in +EPA added by coaching decisions)
Always remember that first press conference, amiright?

Bring it up every time you speak Dan Campbell's name. Dudes that talk about biting kneecaps have calluses on their hands from the knuckles dragging while they walk.

Some will try to tell you Dan Campbell is an empath with an uncommon EQ, but don't listen to those chuckleheads.

Remember the narrative; the public facing persona tells you everything you need to know. Hold onto that first impression narrative.

Mans nothing but a more macho version of Anthony Robbins. His reign of terror will crumble when his coordinators scurry off to get that bag.

:sarcasm:

Week 12 locker room speech

game balls:
  • LB Malcolm Rodriguez - filling in for Anzalone, tied with Jack Campbell for team high in tackles
  • P Mr Jack Fox - pinned IND 4x inside the 20, highest paid punter in the league is having an incredible year
  • Assistant Head Coach/RBs Coach Scottie Montgomery (came over to the Lions from the Colts 2 years ago)

Dan Campbell's record in 2021 and through Week 8 2022
  • 4-19-1 .188
    (0-11-1 .042 on the road)
Dan Campbell's record since Halloween 2022
  • 32-9-0 .780
    (16-5-0 .762 on the road)
Detroit's 30-8 regular season record in that same stretch ties the best 38-game span in franchise history.

note: Lions won NFL Championships 1952 & 1953, lost NFL Title game 1954

This is not a particularly rare stretch in NFL history; 461 times a team has had a 38 game stretch with between 31 and 34 regular season wins. It's only rare by the woeful Detroit standard.
  • 1985-87 Bears and back to back SB Champion 1971-73 Dolphins teams hold several iterations of the record. 34 wins, 4 losses.
  • Patriots best 38 game stretch was 2006-08, and Manning's Colts 2004-06 matched their 33 wins.
  • Madden's Raiders 1974-77 and Lombardi's Packers 1960-63 also won 33 out of 38 several times.
  • Going back to the 1950s, the Browns 1950-53 also had many 33/38 game spans.

How the heck did McNeil not get a game ball yesterday? He was dominating.

It was a statement to the studs to step it up and not rest on accomplishments to date. Giving a game ball to the punter and an assistant coach just says i expect better next week. He even said we have a lot of things to clean up. Hopefully Goff's 10 ffp is one of them

Or, ya know, it’s a statement they expect McNeill and Ragnow and Sewell and all the other second contract players to dominate every week.

Rodrigo was a nice 6th round find in Y1. Then Barnes passed him, and Jack Campbell was drafted in the first round. Had him playing fullback last year. Special Teams only in the first two playoff games.

NFCCG, played 41 snaps off the bench, mostly in coverage, had a stellar game.

Yesterday he was their top run defender. Has a PFF grade over 90 in run defense for the year. As the LB4. Stud.

Heck, the punter was embarrassed he got a game ball. Probably thinking all this attention and the really football players are going to stuff me in a locker...thanks for nothing coach.

Mr Jack Fox is the highest paid punter in the NFL for a reason. Dude is a weapon.

But yeah, when you spend your entire season working with 2 other guys on the adjacent field, I imagine low key is the way to go lol.

He's a pretty funny guy. When he first came in the league he started a social media account nobody knew about called Matt Prater's Massive Schlong or something like that. Think it was the year Prater had 8 FGs from over 50.

Bates and Fox are super humble and the long snapper is a rookie, so the whole operation consists of probably the biggest wallflowers in the locker room.

I saw Bates and Fox's wife/gf at the Indy game. Pretty hot. They were hanging out together.

placeholder for the Week 14 locker room speech (0:25 snippet from NFL Prime - destined for this; just stay the course)

Dan Campbell's record in 2021 and through Week 8 2022
  • 4-19-1 .188

First win as Lions head coach was 3 years ago - December 5, 2021 walk-off TD with 0:00 left, Goff-to-St Brown for the rookie WR's first NFL touchdown

Dan Campbell's record since Halloween 2022
  • 34-9-0 .791
    (18-4-0 .818 at home, 16-5-0 .762 on road)
Detroit's 32-8 regular season record in that same span is the best 40-game span in franchise history.

Detroit's current win streak of 11 games is a new franchise record; the old record, in 1934, was their first season in Detroit. They started 10-0.

I can't say that going for it on 4th and 1 from your own 28 is a smart move, even if you were successful on all but one 4th down tries. He almost failed on two of them when Goff fell down, but somehow managed to handoff to Montgomery who got the first down. If he does that in the playoffs it could very well bite him in the bum.

I think it's the exact opposite when it comes to the playoffs, you are one and done and anything more than 13 seconds is a long time (giggity) when you have a competent offense as your opponent.

And if he doesn’t it could bite him too. Who do you trust more- the best OL, RB group, slot WR and OC in the league or a defense with 20+ guys out with injury and giving up 10 yard per pass?

Campbell’s last 4th down decision was smart. His decision to go for it on his own thirty was just cocky and ignorant. It’s not like it was a yard or less. He got lucky with the win this time.

I know that's a reference to the Chiefs-Billa game but to me it's 100% Galaxy Quest.

I'm not sure I'd call the last one smart, lol, but the one in his own territory was simply reckless. Nobody does that with a lead and at home, no less, especially with a good punter (for good reason). It made the game MUCH harder than it had to be. My guess is Gamble is one of those guys who believes he's the smartest guy in the room and has to prove it. It's ok to think you're the smartest guy in the room, but the problem is the last part (thinking you have to prove it).

I've heard comments that if Gamble loses a game on one of his silly decisions, it's ok because he'll win several in the meantime. Well, winning a game you already had essentially locked up doesn't count. I believe that's simply who Dan Campbell is and he's not going to change. If he does change, that means he made a bunch of bad decisions and got burned...either way isn't good.

I had my suspicions Gamble was impulsive after the game in Dallas last year when he knee-jerked and still went for 2 from the 7 after a penalty, but it now looks like he seems to have trouble controlling his emotions and it affects his decision-making. Imagine how full of yourself you have to be to go for 2 from the 7 against a good D (at the time) when you didn't have to. It's going to be interesting to see how Detroit does once they lose their coordinators. Gamble could be in over his head without a top OC/DC. Hard to say right now.

Gonna cost his team a SB
If the Lions lose because he was aggressive and it failed, us fans can live with that.
If the Lions lose because he took his foot off the gas and played conservatively, we will be pissed off.

Exactly. Notice how it is Packers and other fans who are 'worried' for us. Campbell has molded this team around his philosophies. The Lions fanbase, players, ownership, management, and coaches are 100 percent bought in on what Campbell is doing. We laugh at outside criticism.

As a Packer fan, I’m not worried for you guys at all. Big fan of how DC coaches. And literally spend zero time worrying about what happens with the Lions.

Good Luck Dan. He said what needed to be said. This will be a good week to build some DL confidence with reps against a team reeling. If the Bears Offense looks good against them, I'd be concerned.

Rooting for Detroit and Buffalo this year.

Hoenst question to those out there (Dolphin Fan here so no dog in this fight), but would you prefer a coach who basically said "we are not punting, period" vs the coach who punts when he shouldn't?

If I was an owner, I'd want the coach to go for it on 4th and 4 or less almost all the time, and on 4th and 7 or less about a third of the time. Sure, sometimes that can be a disaster, but caution doesn't really tend to be teh +EV play in football.
