Sean Payton is a good match in that he's the best coach available and Denver -- which offers stable ownership and a roster with talent -- is drawn to that. But some around the league are skeptical about whether Payton wants to tie his future to Russell Wilson, who struggled mightily in 2022, though he improved late in the year. A massive six-year deal can assuage any concerns if Payton wants to wait out Wilson and develop another quarterback eventually. The organization has shown little patience with head coaches, six of whom have been fired since 2009. John Fox was the only coach to last longer years, and he got to a Super Bowl. Payton might opt for more stable ground elsewhere.

Won't the money basically be the same wherever he goes? I mean, how much more money would it take to get someone to tie themselves to Russell Wilson?Have to wonder if Payton wants a fresh new QB to groom or inherit a proven guy in Wilson and help him regain his footing. My vote would be the latter, but I guess money talks at the end of the day.
why would he go to denver?? why would anyone go to denver? Colts have the best team in the NFL that no one is talking about. but, it's indy. who the hell wants to go there?
Cars? why would you ever want to go to the cards? losing franchise with shabby players and a lousy QB.Panthers? that's purgatory. hell zone devoid of talented players. Dalls will be open as of tuesday morning when Jones fires McCarthy after a debacle in TB.
And the Chargers cannot and should not continue with the weak coaching staff they have in place.
I thought it was going to be like a #1 but I've been hearing at least 2 #1's, maybe will rise to something close to the Gruden level.Curious what the Saints will get in return. Gruden brought 2 1sts and 2 2nds.

If I'm a fan of a team looking at him I'm sweating it out every day hoping they go in another direction or he finds someplace else he wants to go. I'm out on that.
Saints just said they're bringing Allen back. Not sure what the motivation would be to not be truthful about that. But anyway, given the likely price tag, what if the most sensible spot is.........New Orleans?
Bring in a QB and go toe to toe with Desmond Ridder, Sam Darnold, and whoever the back up in Tampa is.
He's a great coach
His resume is nearly identical to Mike McCarthy.
[Sean Payton] just said he talked to [Saints' GM Mickey Loomis] and the comp will be somewhere around a mid to late 1st round pick
He was just on Colin Cowherd and just said that that is what Loomis said it would take .
I find it odd that Payton would make that info public but it is what it is I guess
Just passing it along in case you did not see the interview
I think that’s probably true. I do think Payton is a good coach but he’s not on the mega elite tier.Payton is way overrated in my opinion. Drew Brees covers up a lot of dumb coaching.
Amazing to me that anyone voluntarily watches that.Anyone here catch Colin Cowherd's show today?
Obvious you didn’t pay attention to what he did last year with the carousel of QBs he had. Over-opinionated has never been something short on these boards the past 20 years.Payton is way overrated in my opinion. Drew Brees covers up a lot of dumb coaching.
Sean Payton said the Saints have informed him they want a mid-to-late first round pick as trade compensation.
It's been widely assumed that at least one first round pick would be required of whatever team lands Payton this offseason, but that speculation has now been confirmed. Payton has been a hot name on the coaching market this offseason and met last Tuesday with the Broncos for an in-person interview. The Broncos, who traded away several first round picks to acquire Russell Wilson last offseason received a 2023 first round pick from the Dolphins when they traded away Bradley Chubb at the deadline. That pick could prove crucial in acquiring Payton if he decides to resume his coaching career in Denver.
If Dallas is One and Done my thinking is Sean goes to Dallas once McCarthy is fired.
That sounds…steep.
Yep - and enough competition for Payton that someone is more likely to pay. That sounds…steep.
There's a lot of moving parts. Jim Harbaugh has just announced a return to Michigan, so that's one less big-name coach out there.
They have the pick that Denver doesn’t.If Dallas is One and Done my thinking is Sean goes to Dallas once McCarthy is fired.
A lot of fans here are banking very hard on this. We'll see.
They have the pick that Denver doesn’t.
Oh snap - I forgot about that too.I forgot that Denver does have the 49ers first rounder, plus picks 68 (from Indy) and 69 in the third.

Arizona has hired a GM now

But brees wasn’t an obvious undeniable qb talent in the nfl. Payton really figured out how to get the most out of him. Whether he can do that with another qb remains to be seen, but Payton deserves a lot of the credit for making it work.Turned a horrible franchise into a successful one.Obvious you didn’t pay attention to what he did last year with the carousel of QBs he had. The Chargers moved on from him, the Dolphins chose Culpepper rather than him and his shoulder was iffy when he got to NO...he was not the Drew Brees we know now when Payton got him.

Brees was coming on in San Diego, and the Chargers moved on because of his shoulder and the fact they had drafted Rivers.
I think it's silly to suggest that Payton made Drew Brees.
Not very quantitative, but if every game I watch a team and ask "what is he (the coach) doing?" I tend to not think much of the coach.
Sean got more out of him than Marty ball, but I think Brees was going to be great regardless. But brees was t an obvious undeniable qb talent in the nfl. No...it actually is not silly to think Payton had a very big influence in Brees' career development...and if you want to look at the history of the NFL almost every great QB had a great Coach (and vice versa)...they go hand and hand.
The Advocate's Jeff Duncan reports Sean Payton is believed to be seeking $20-$25 million per season in contract negotiations.
Duncan also reports that Payton is seeking a four-year deal, and that the Saints consider two first-round picks the "starting point" in any trade discussions. Ay caramba. Payton is a difference-making coach, but that would be close to franchise-crippling for a team like the Broncos that is already out its 2023 first-rounder. Payton would have to do the job of his life with declining franchise quarterback Russell Wilson to make that deal worth it. Consider us skeptical any team would cough up a pair of Day 1 selections despite Payton's track record.
