High Quality Tequila (1 Viewer)

Don't see an "official" thread for this one yet.

What are the favorites?

My top 3 are siembra valles, fortaleza and tequila ocho

All those are extremely drinkable, smooth

Got a new bottle of Siembra Valles blanco which Im going to get into tonight!

I bought a bottle of Cantera Negra extra anejo in March. It still in 3/4 full, but the couple times I have had a bit it is pretty decent I think.

I am no expert though. At the very beginning of the pandemic I bought a hundred dollar bottle of almost every type of liquor(1 tequila, 1 gin, 1 whiskey, etc), even though I am not much of a hard alcohol fan. At the time it seemed like a sensible thing to do.

Depends. Blanco, Reposada, or Anejo?

For blanco I prefer Tierra Fertil. Great for making ranch water.  Espolon is a close 2nd.

Not sure I have a favorite reposada.  I rarely buy it. Don Julio is always a solid choice across all categories.

My favorite Anejo is actually an Extra Anejo called Mexican Moonshine, soon to be renamed Cancion. I'm sure it isn't as good as I think it is as I have an emotional attachment to it since I backed it many years ago on Indiegogo. Tears of Llorana is also excellent.

This is a great thread.  I will echo Espolon for Blanco.

I want to drink more anejo. I am not sure I have a favorite.

I don't know if this is the place but how come mezcal in Mexico is incredible and here it's either non existent or not good.

Cuervo Gold.  The reason I can't do tequila in any straight fashion -  even 24 years after the fact.
I kind of get what you are saying because cuervo gold ruined a couple of nights for me when younger too but good tequila is such a completely different experience, I don't even think about it anymore.

I typically drink blancos or reposadas, not that I have any problem sipping on an anejo but its not my first choice usually

Cuervo Gold is the nastiest stuff known to mankind.  Charcoal tasting nastiness.  Total rookie move.

I have tried a couple in restaurants but I doubt the choices were great.

I may need to try some of these mentioned.

God I can't imagine I will enjoy this but I'll try to find one of these bottles tomorrow.

If I hate it I'll find a way to drop the remaining bottle off at @Judge Smails in Austin next week.

A couple of bottles that I brought back from Mexico last year were quite good.   Both are Cuervo products.  The first was Familia  reserve Anejo, very smooth and nice all around.  The other was 1800 Melenio extra Anejo, maybe one of the smoothest and best tequilas I have  ever had. A perfect after dinner sipping drink.  Way tastier than an Armagnac which I also love.   Both were highly recommended to me by a friend and they were somewhat reasonably priced in La Paz Mexico as opposed to buying in US. When or if I can even find them in Colorado.  Sadly they don't stay around very long at my house.  But luckily it just means another trip to Mexico is needed to replenish my cellar.

Let me tell you a little story about a young Foosball God, a game called Drink-o, and his freshman year of college.  No, no, it's too much.  Lets just say I drank a half a fifth of Cuervo shots and chased it with some Everclear "punch".  Then spent the night in and out of black out puking out my insides and was hung over for two days afterwards.

   I was just thinking the same thing and I hardly even drink but I'm tempted.   Hopefully I forget about this thread before I make my way out into the world.

Hard pressed to do much better than patron silver.  The price point for it at least here is a bargain.  Don't care for aged stuff.  Would rather drink whiskey than whiskey flavored tequila.

🤣 I hope you're trolling.  Patron. ¡Dios mío!

Don Julio. Espolon. Cazadores. Corazon. Tierra Fertil. Avion. Herradura. Milagro. Take your pick.
Don julio has really hiked their price point, to the point of being too spendy.  It was the go to.   Herradura and patron both have reduced a little in the last few years and I find them interchangeable.  I try to keep to something in the $80/1.75 range. Taxes and stuff will change that in your areas.

I don't drink much at all but I appreciate the input. Where and when I do I've usually gone much more upscale in the prior two years or so.

I would like to try milagro but their bottle is stupid looking and i can't mentally get past such a fugly bottle. Sorry. The rest I'll look for and I'm not familiar with.

I visited a Specs today with the intention of trying one of these bottles - and they were sampling Patron and some other tequila that was supposed to be better.

I suppressed vomit after the patron.

Just can't do it.

On the opposite end, Poncho Villa.....had a couple rough nights with that el crapo back in the day......it is cheap, and bad

Pulling this back up.

Reading a lot lately about how if you're going to drink alcohol, Tequila is the one to drink. It's of course not "healthy", but most seem to think it's better than others.

I like a Ranch Water and usually just classic with Topo Chico, LIme and blanco Tequila. I know some like some sort of sugar or syrup but I usually omit.

For a reasonable priced blanco, what's the current thinking? Currently have a bottle of Espolon. My little local liquor store carries that in handles along with Olmeca Altos.

Thoughts?

Also, what about sipping neat?

Interesting to hear. Anecdotally as my age increases I've found that my body doesn't react nearly as well to Bourbon as it used to. Even with just a single pour it affects my sleep and I often wake up sluggish or with a mild headache the next day. With multiple pours of course much worse, even when I'm not getting hammered or anything.

I've started drinking more and more tequila lately because I've found I don't have the same effects, at least nearly as bad, drinking Tequila. Just sipping on a nice reposado or anejo like I would a glass of bourbon. I don't like it as much as bourbon, but it's still nice and I don't feel nearly as bad afterwards.

Just sipping on a nice reposado or anejo

Thanks. Do you have recommendations there?

As mentioned above (back in 2020, I guess sitting inside sipping Tequila was something we were all more into then!) Clase Azul Reposado is my go to, though it's gotten more popular and the price has increased substantially since then.

I was sipping on El Mayor Anejo last night and enjoyed it. Don't know much about it other than I bought it and it was good.

Teremana (the Rock's brand) is surprisingly good among cheaper stuff (under $30/bottle most places).

I'm more of a vodka guy these days (less headaches than the dark whiskies that I loved the taste of), but just wanted to mention I have a friend that enjoys a good añejo, but for some reason mixes it with diet orange soda.

That azul ain’t cheap. Wife saw the bottle somewhere it was like $50 a shot
I think I paid $150 or $175 a 5th. Dont remember if we tried it yet

Good stuff here. I’ve only recently gotten into tequila, and I’m amazed at how smooth the better ones are.

Like many, for the longest time I had a negative impression of tequila based off the awful cheap stuff we drank in college.

Always looking for good (albeit not pricey) recommendations). My wife enjoys palomas (Casamigos with Fresca).
