Braves with first postseason series win in 19 years.  I never would have guessed that.
And it's been 25 years since the WS win.  They had a few off years but they've been a really well run organization since 1991.  Another WS win during those 30 years would have been nice (and maybe expected considering their opportunities) but they keep putting themselves in position.  Maybe we will get lucky one year (doubt it's this year but who knows).

Well aware of that other stuff.  I've been a fan since the early 80s.  Was just surprised it had been that long since winning a postseason series.  Thought for sure they had another in that time I wouldn't remember if they got bounced shortly after.

Been fun having these games on during the day while working from home.  I really do miss the fans during playoff games though.  WAY more intensity with the volume of fans after a big play or with 2 out and 2 strikes.  Just not the same.  Covid can bite it.

Did the Padres really use 9 pitchers? What is the major league record? And what's the record for fewest pitches for a winning pitcher in the playoffs?

Just read this on ESPN:

"San Diego is the first team in major league history, regular season or playoffs, to complete a nine-inning shutout by using at least nine pitchers, according to ESPN Stats & Information research."

ETA: 8 or more pitchers in 3 consecutive postseason games.

Padres first postseason series win in 22 years.

loved having the expanded playoffs... not a realistic scenario for a regular 162 game schedule, but watched more than I thought I would.

Did they shorten the fences in petco? Ball is flying out.
It was doing the same thing at Dodger Stadium.....plus it was weird with the walls being navy blue instead of Dodger blue.  I had forgotten the game was being played in LA and the first few innings I kept thinking this looked like Dodger Stadium but something was off.  It was just weird seeing the different colors.

It was great watching the Astros play away vs. Oakland and not have to listen to that damn drum and all the distractions at the Coliseum.  No ugly green and yellow either.

Can. Not. Wait!!!  So excited.  Wish we had Lamet as we need him against your powerhouse and hopefully Clevinger is healthy but either way should be fun.  We’re no doubt the underdogs but we’ve got some scrap in us!
Losing Lamet is a huge hit to the Padres.  Their pitching staff is a problem with all the injuries.  They will have to outslug the Dodgers to win but it's possible.  Plus Roberts will over coach and cost them at least a game or two there as well.

Did Roberts jump ship in the afternoon to manage the Yankees for a bit?  There is no other explanation to pulling out Garcia after 1 inning in that game.  Talk about over thinking things and putting your team behind the bullpen curve.  Garcia has been outstanding.  This made zero sense.  Now your bullpen has been seen by the Rays for an additional time which will only help in a series as the more you see a guy the better feel you have for his release point, movement, etc.  I don't understand these managers for the playoffs....

Boone doesn't decide something like that.

Yeah, clearly the "analytics" guys decided to get cute. Apparently its REALLY important to get Happ (who, to be fair, had a nice run this season) as many innings as possible.

Just incredibly stupid. Rays killing them again tonight. Totally changed the momentum of the series.

Great game.  Agree with dkp that Bellinger’s grab swung the game and perhaps the series.

Tatis is ridiculous. I’m sure he’s pissed about losing that HR, but I think he’s most pissed about missing on the first pitch from Kelly in the 9th.  He guessed breaking ball, and Kelly left an 86 mph hanger that Fernando JUST missed.

What a fall for Paddack. 3 months ago he was presumably the Padre ace; now he’s behind Zack freakin’ Davies in the postseason rotation, if he even gets to start tonight.  Tingler/Preller may go bullpen game again.

Gore’s star must be falling as well.  Strange that he can’t help this team and that Ryan Weathers got the call before him.  Preller has a lot of work to do this winter if Clevinger and Lamet injuries are serious.

I don't think it necessarily means his star is falling.  It could just be that the usage they planned for that roster spot didn't fit his strengths.  He is probably groomed for starter only and they may not want to throw him to the wolves in the playoffs out of the pen.  I don't think SD initially planned for this to be the year but then it kind of presented itself so they made trades to go after it.  Then after that injuries have decimated them.  I think Gore is the long term solution as a staff ace or #2 and they didn't want to push him in this particular situation.

Realistically I was surprised the brought up Patino early season instead of Gore.  But again, it may be since they were using him out of the pen and I think they want Gore exclusively as a starter.

Was just saying the same thing about Paddack the other day. Really thought for sure we had a top of the rotation guy after last year.

Gore’s Thing is really strange as well. I thought for sure he would get called up right before the playoffs. You’re absolutely right there must be something going on there. Especially considering how aggressive the Padres have been in recent years about calling up young guys.

I know I should just be happy that we’re competitive and making some noise for the first time in forever. But losing your top two starters also leaves a bitter taste in your mouth. Really think we had a run in us at the Dodgers if we had those guys. Alas off into the fair good night we go.  We’ve got a ton of talent in the future looks extremely bright but being a lifelong padre fan I’m pretty jaded and scared that this might be a one and done thing.   Sure hope not.

I think the Padres are going to be good for a few years. That team just has too much talent.

Jansen sucks

And Joe Kelly Dave??

Seriously??
No way your Doyers win the WS with Jansen closing things down.  Local radio suggesting Dustin May could possibly close.

They've been the jokes of the NL West for soooo many years, it's cool to see them build up all that young talent that's budding right at the same time.

Roberts will trot him out there til he blows at least one

:kicksrock:
He's young, fearless and has great stuff.  I mean, he emergency-started opening day and had a nice outing, no?

Some combination of Joe Kelly, if he gets his s--t together, and May, would be a solid close combo.

I think Jensen is toast.

No offense intended @shuke - Reds had a good year and have a right future with those young pitchers.  Some talk around Atlanta about trying to sign Bauer after that performance against them.

Sorry, I meant Roberts will keep calling for Kenley
