How Do You Get Your News - Email Newsletters? (1 Viewer)

First. Do NOT make this a political / bias thread. If you want to that, go ruin the one in the Political forum.

I'm always interested in how people hear about news.

One way I've found useful is email newsletters. It's pretty straightforward - sites take in all the news of the day and condense it down to a summary of things they think you need to know. It's the exact same thing we do with the Footballguys Email Update for NFL News.

For regular news, what sources do you guys like?

I do a few. (And some of these are referral links as I'm interested in how sites do these too)

NY Times Daily Briefing

Morning Brew.  Basically general news.

USA Today. Just what you think.

The Hustle.co. More business oriented.

Daily Skimm. More casual. Seems often geared more towards women

Are there newsletters you like?

Sorry but  :lmao:  @ the bolded.

I actually get my news from the FFA. If it's worth it, I'll go read about it on my own.

reuters.com

BBC.com/news

Dr.dk, tv2.dk

And the national newspapers, e.g.  South China Morning Post, Straits Times if in Asia

One of my favorites, and yea it is probably considered "Old School", is Yahoo.
It is my go to site first thing in the morning to catch up on what happened while I was

Nicely laid out format of the latest news from around the world from many different sources.

CBS in the morning when I'm getting ready to go to work and a little in the evening while making dinner.

Learn about some events here and then explore the internet but no real go to site.

I find the news and how we get it more interesting than the news these days.

I get the NYtimes daily briefing email and do a quick scan of my Google aggregator news feed in the am (as well as check in here in the FFA- often the place I hear things first, like the Nashville tornado).

At lunch I check the Google feed (and make sure to occasionally click on CNN and Fox so I can keep those in the feed). Then scan through in order: NYTimes, BBC, Al-Jazeera.

Feel I get a decent balance of big/small picture news from enough POVs to cut through the editorialized crap of MSM.

Twitter, google news feed, cnn. I literally cannot imagine subscribing to any email news letter but to each their own.

I used to love getting to work, opening up CNN and just reading the news for a while.  I'd take some time around lunch to pull up Yahoo news articles and then at the end of the day I'd read some lighthearted MSN articles about travel or fun things.

Then 2016 happened...

Honestly, I have pretty much given up on news.  Everything is political.  Everything.  Before 2000, about 80% of this country went most of their lives never talking to anyone about politics.  It was the best of times.  Now it's the worst of times.  Everything is so hateful and black and white.  If you don't agree with me on my position, I hate you and your family with the intensity of a thousand suns.  And that's not just politics.  That's whether or not you think a show on FX is good or not.

I can look up articles about sports or entertainment and still 80% of those articles have some tie to politics.  It's so annoying.

Then, on top of that, every article is slanted in a huge way, to one side or another.  So you don't even know if you're getting real news.  I see a headline and my first thought is, "Wow.  I wonder if that's actually true."  That's what we've come to.

When it comes down to it, I'm pretty cool with not getting news.  It's depressing anyway.  My only complaint is now I have so much free time at work, the days drag on forever.

Thanks a lot, MSM!

Another vote for the FFA. I come in here and read topics. If something seems noteworthy, I read the links provided. If it's something really newsworthy, I go down the rabbit hole looking for articles that have radically different POVs, and try and find "truth".

I stopped watching TV news years ago. Stopped reading newspapers/websites a little later. Too much manipulation and fear-mongering.

Yep.

That's why I still get the KC Star newspaper.  I don't get ads popping up on me and there isn't a comment section at the end of of each article. The KC Star headlines are relatively benign in terms of any slant, so I can read the major stories and get a good gist of what's going on out there.

I can then go online and read more if I choose to.

Same boat. But that's why I use the Google aggregator and do my own aggregation. Allows me to even skim headlines from varying sites about the same story and parse together more of a truth than just picking one.

That's what it's come to.

But even supposedly more newsy sources like NYTimes have always had a slant...or at least as long as I've been reading it for 30+ years.

I get a few industry newsletters, but I never read them.

I hop on this forum every weekday at around 9:30am, so I get a lot of my "news" here.

Also scroll through Facebook at around the same time, so get updated there too.

I used to buy USA Today a few times a week to read at lunch, but then again I was only looking at the sports page.  I haven't done that in quite some time.

I would like to like this post, but can you tell me who you plan to vote for first?

For stuff dealing with the latest from the White House, there is a great daily aggregator (Maurile has mentioned it as well).   The name doesn't work with your language filter.

Spell out WTFjusthappenedtoday.com.

I used to know stuff from here that I would later see on Facebook. Now sometimes I see things in Facebook first. But I don’t need to read anything in Facebook because I know by who shared it what it’s going to say. At least here I can be surprised.
