I'll give an example if you don't know what I mean.

You have your sights set on one major sleeper. His name is Joe Blow. It's the 10th round, and this is right about where you had him targeted. A couple of picks before you, Bob is on the clock. Some bigmouth in your league says "Hey Bob... JOE BLOW IS STILL AVAILABLE! He's gonna break out this year. You should take him!!!"

This has happened in my leagues, many times. If the blabbermouth owner really feels that way, why announce it to everyone else?

This behavior, to me, is completely unacceptable and should be met with immediate eviction from the league, if not Capital punishment.

What say you?

 
The mere fact that someone is attempting to help someone else win, would have me leaving the league.

Defeats the entire purpose of a competitive league.

 
If there's any money on the line I would absolutely be pissed. I've seen this in free leagues & blew it off, most money league guys know better.

People in my league do this all the time. We will announce that everyone from Joe Blow, who is the #2 reciever on the Bucs, to John Doe, who is an undrafted TE likely to be cut, is still available. Usually people throw out names of guys they don't want and someone else to waste a pick. It is up to the guy drafting to cut through the chat and take who he wants.

 
name dropping is not allowed at our drafts, plain and simple.

unless you are being facetious dropping silly names like Mark Sanchez as a 1st rd pick to our 2 Jets fans in our league.

 
No different than the idiot who speculates during a hand on a poker table....or worse what he folded. There should be rules against it. Money on the line means ####

:goodposting: If I drafted every player whose name was mentioned when I was on the clock, I'd have the worst team in the league. With that said, there's one league where every year after I draft a TE, I say "uh oh, looks like it's about time for the TE run to start". It's a total self-fulfilling prophecy- everyone starts anticipating a TE run, so they grab a TE to get out ahead of it, resulting in a TE run. I have no idea how no one has caught on yet.

 
I don't see the issue. At least half the crap we say during the draft is dis-information anyways. I think if you are in a competitive league with smart guys, there shouldn't be any owners that don't already know the names....rendering name dropping pointless and just a fun part of draft chat. Just my 2 cents.

I think this is a great question. IMHO It's too hard to enforce. Especially if people are drinking and getting loose. I dont ever remember this happening in any league I've been in but if it did; I would be pis'ed. I'd probably make said person look like a jackass in front of everyone and probably not invite them back. Maybe next time they are in some other league they remember.
 
For my only live draft we have a rule that if an undrafted player slips past your lips he's yours your next pick if no one ahead of you takes him.

Exactly. I know there have been plenty of times I've been in the middle of the 6th round and commented "wow, no kickers have been picked yet. Surprised." Or ask an innocent question like "didn't JOE BLOW sprain his ankle last night?". Its all in fun and usually meant to get a laugh. Now, this is in small money leagues like $50 to $100 with friends and co-workers. All part of the fun with a live draft.
 
My leagues are fairly friendly leagues where everyone knows everyone and are $100 or less. So it wouldn't bother me a bit. A big money league, yes, I can see having a problem with it.

You really want to throw someone out of a league for speaking openly about who is still available at the draft? That's sad. Try to enjoy fantasy football as a fun hobby with friends, and stop looking at it as a battle between enemies.

In auctions I like to throw out things like, "In 20 minutes middle tier Ds are going to be going for (4x current price) when you guys realize how much money you have left."Pisses people off sometimes, but if I'm a fan of disinformation and maximizing your team through different means during live auctions.
 
I dont mind it at all, all the people in my local leagues are poker buddies, we angle shoot each other the entire way through the draft.

It's worse in our auctions. You get all the comments about how cheap players are going for, just egging guys to keep bidding. It's funny stuff but it will drive you crazy when you think your getting a steal on a player & then the comments start flying & late bidders jump in.
 
Naming players who really suck or kickers pre-10th round or so is no issue. Nobody's gonna take Seyi Ajirotutu in the 3rd, so if there's a running joke about him in your league...have at it.

If however, it's the third and some ####### goes "Hey Rivers is still out there..." then he deserves to have a hot fire poker shoved up his ###.

yep, getting people to draft players that you dont want is part of the strategy.
 
I remember back in the day when Bo Jackson was going to play a half season for the Raiders, I was all chubbed up to take him late in my draft, and someone "jokingly" shouts out his name and he goes right before I picked. That's how long I've been dealing with this crap. It ain't right.

 
Worse - the guy that's not paying attention to the draft and in the middle goes, "What quarterbacks are still available?" or "Is so-and-so hurt?" Usually somebody else ends up answering and it drives me crazy. But how much of an issue do you want to make of it? I don't want to be "that guy" that everybody else in the league thinks is a giant tool because he's whining about the way other people draft.

I did draw a line in the sand one year when someone took Byron Hanspard after Hanspard wrecked his knee. Somebody else commented that Hanspard was out for the year and the drafter said, "Oh, well then I'm taking somebody else." I said, "No, you picked him the pick stands." At this point the drafter showed what a giant tool he is and started going, "F You (except the actual word)!!!" I told him, "I'd reply to that but then I'd be just as big of a jackass as you." Fortunately, a couple of owners said, "Mark's right. We can't go back and change picks. It's your responsibility." The commissioner backed us up. The guy threw a fit about it and left the next year.

Some guy in every draft thinks he's auditioning for Mel Kiper's job. Every now and then some guy will do his bad Phil Hellmuth impression.

Let it go. Concentrate on your draft and concentrate on enjoying the experience rather than focusing on annoying guys.

 
Fight fire with fire- start throwing out names before everyone picks. Pretend you're Rainman if you have to, act like you can't control it. Eventually, they'll probably get the hint.

 
I hate it. In the same vein the " i'm drafting X, it was between him and Y" :rant: no one cares why you picked what you did until after. ST FU

This guy is SO GOOD and is guaranteed to have a breakout year that I waited until the 10th round to get him.

Then they stole my 10th round pick. LOL

All joking aside... I think it is part of the fun.

Last year my league laughed at me for drafting McFadden. I dropped him after like week 1 to free up a slot. One of the guys that made fun of me for picking him, picked him right up.

 
There's not a rule about it in my draft but no one does it. We laugh and joke and have a good time while getting more and more drunk and still no one slips and does it. The implications in earlier posts that a draft can't be "fun" while maintaining tight lips on draft picks is off base.

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with it, though. If it's the norm in your draft then people expect it and take the shout-outs with a grain of salt. If, though, your league is like mine or Raider Nation's and then someone calls out a legit name then it's BS. It all depends on the "unwritten rules" of your draft. Everyone knows them (or should) especially in leagues that have been around a while.

Do whatever you want but be prepared for retaliation. If it happened in our league, especially later in the draft when we are all mostly trashed, the person who did the name call out would be in deep doo-doo. He'd get razzed the entire night, would hear about it for years on the message boards and would probably get denied trades with responses along the lines of "Why don't you trade with your buddy who you made a pick for last season, d-bag! Haha!"

Of course we are all on friendly terms, some of us buddies - some just aquaintences, but either way we know the unwritten rules.

Know them in your league as well, I suggest.

My auction draft last night the commish in the middle of an ongoing bid for Best, who I was about to get for a real bargain, said, "rascal about to get a steal here because nobody wants to bid"

Price promptly doubled and I didn't get him.

I'm unsure of what i should do at this point other than #####ing about it. I was livid at the draft, but having anger issues the last thing I wanted was a fight so I said it was BS and left it at that. He didn't do it again, but i'm still pissed.

Well, on a serious note, if you don't like the style of your draft then I'd leave the league after this season.Is it your first year in this league? If not then has the commish done this before? If he has then there's probably no changing the situation. If not then maybe he just effed-up. Talk with him about it and let him know that it bothered you. Be polite but let him know that you don't really feel comfortable in a league where The Commish helps low bids become higher - especially if there's real money involved.If you don't feel comfortable approaching your Commish like this then maybe that's a sign you might want to shop around for a new league next year.Either way, talking with him about it is the way to go. Like I said in an earlier post - each league has it's unwritten rules and they are very different sometimes. Find out if what the Commish did is "OK" in your league or not. From my point of view the guy running the show (the commish) should be as neutral as possible. I'd tend to be on your side in this one.

A lot of guys are making legitimate points here that should actually be addressed when discussing rules in the offseason.

Rascal has every right to be absolutely livid. He's also right that he doesn't want to start a fight during the auction. Raider Nation is right that Namedropping shouldn't be allowed. He's also right that he doesn't want to be "that guy" right in the middle of the draft.

Some of the owners in my main league have gone to our commissioner during the rules suggestion period in the offseason and have had these issues put on the agenda to discuss as rule changes during our predraft organizational meeting where we address possible rule changes. We've got the league to vote into the rules an owner has announced a selection it is official." "Owners may not offer advice to other owners during the draft."

You usually have better discussions when you're not in the heat of the draft and those that are "namedropping" can hear why it's bad and hopefully understand.

 
I absolutely can't stand people doing this.

We have a draft with two separate conferences that draft separately. My biggest thing tthat bothers me is people in the other draft helping out the guys that didn't prepare.

We are all playing for the same money. Its not an entirely different league.
