Not as far as Yakov Smirnof or Gallagher.

Yakov was on WTF ahwile back. He's spent the last 20 years performing for about 2,000 people/night, 5 times a week (over 4 million total), bought his own theater, earned a masters and teaches at colleges, etc. Compare that to Dice's last 20 years and he would wish he'd "fallen" as far as Yakov (the two are friends and were roommates when starting in comedy, btw.)

Dice is still performing, had a part in Woody Allen's "Blue Jasmine" appeared in The Blacklist, had a Showtime special about a year and a half ago, recently signed a book deal with Simon and Schuster. He's not doing bad. But for poor Yakov, there's only so long senile senior citizens will come to his show in Branson Missouri because they think the 80's cold war is still going on.

He was the boy band of comedians. Something as big as he was had no chance of sustained success, not unless he had another good idea--because the whole Dice thing was ONE good idea. He didn't have another good idea.

Lowest common denominator, never a bad idea. I liked his character, and especially enjoyed people that didn't get the joke. Tragically, that was a lot of his crowd. Bros, before they were called that, yelling out the jokes before he could tell them, how much fun can that be at a show?

Became awful real quick, a caricature of a caricature.

I thought he was stupid back then, and I was in high school. I remember seeing one of his shows on TV after he broke really big, and the whole crowd was reciting the punch lines to every joke and I just sat there like

Dude was a legend in his time. When I first saw him on Rodney Dangerfield's young comedian's special on HBO, I had never laughed so hard in my life. There was no comedian like him. Filthy as you could ever imagine, yet hilarious.

But as Lisa Lampanelli said, "I can't believe nursery rhymes have a shelf life!"

I think that same show had Jim Carrey on it. But I agree, ADC was hilarious.

Not sure what you want me to unpack. He's Jewish, I never knew that because he always played the stereotype NY Italian. I just found that out when we did the HBO thing last year.

Kinison had great material though.

Dice is more performance art than straight comedy. (unless you are a teenage boy, then the comedy is funny)

I saw him in Vegas two years ago, he got badly by a heckler. Then his gf or wife or whatever fell over drunk on all the Dice merchandise, it was awesome. He forgot a couple of his punchlines but the value alone was worth the price of admission. I'm shocked he's not dead.

Did you catch his reality show about 7 or 8 years ago? VH1, maybe? It was pretty sad. He was old, bloated and generally unhappy.
