How much do you pay for a haircut? (1 Viewer)

I'm mildly shocked to read so many are going to chain barbers.  I thought for sure the super elite upper tier guys would be going to local shops only.
A number of times over the years, I went to salons or high-end local places.  My experience is that there was little to no difference between the cuts I got and the ones I got at say, Sport Clips.  The chain places, you just need to find someone that does a good job and make appointments with her and then hope she doesn't find a better job.

$20 + $5 for the tip.  I take my son at the same time and spend $50 total.

I've been cutting my own for maybe 12-13 years. On my 3rd set of clippers, I believe. I use a 10 or 12 guard and have it down to a science.

I wonder how difficult it would be to open an independent barber shop. Never mind the costs in licensing and other associated fees, just making the rent in today's strip mall for a barber would have to be pretty difficult. The only independent barber shops around here I know of are comprised of old timers or their kids operating in a ramshackle shop that has been going on forever and the building likely paid off.

All you make pattern bald dudes, we get it you cut the sides and back of your head yourself. This thread is really about those of us with full heads of hair.

Nope just trying to paint a complete picture here.  Some of the self cutters aren't bald either.

My wife has cut my hair since the early 90s.  My only cost was hearing her sometimes complain when the time came.  Back then it was about every two weeks, but for the last ten years I go a month or so between cuts.  If/when she decides to quit, I'll do it myself as I know the routine.  Ton of money saved over the years.

I go to the Aveda 10 salon.  I get a free beer with my haircut (decent microbrew selection also).

$26 + $4 tip.  Been going to the same guy for 20 years.  He can't cut hair worth a damn, but I'm afraid to go somewhere else.   I've had friends who have "left" him for others and their names are no longer spoken.

I haven't paid for a haircut since high school.  I met a cute girl my freshman year and she cut my hair until graduation.

After I graduated I was a long hair and never got a hair cut.

When I entered the corporate world my girlfriend/wife cut my hair and has been doing it for the past 25 years.

$30 cut and like $7 tip. It's crept up the past year from like $25 but I like the shop. No discount for kids cut, sadly, and that means my boy is getting clean up cut for around $15 at some place like Hair Cuttery.

Agree with this.  I have a full head of hair, and would go down to a #1 all around by my wife hates the look.  Her words, "why would you bald yourself if you're not bald?"  I said ok, I'll keep some up top but told her as soon as it starts to recede, I'm buzzing it.  That was when my brother, who is two years older, started to get a bigger forehead.  Mine hasn't started yet.  :kicksrock:

At the salon from my stylist, just a cut $25 +$10 tip.  Cut and color $60 + $15 tip for the stylist +$5 tip for the shampoo gal.

I go every 6 weeks and get color every other time.  Haven't been for about 10 weeks now though as I'm growing it long right now.  Hair variety is the spice of life.  Ok, not really but it's a way to shake things up.
Mani/pedi too, Jamie?

Over-regulation killed the industry. In most states, you can't get a barber's license anymore. You need to get years of training at a salon school, learning to cut men's and women's hair, and get a Cosmetology license. Used to be you just had to buy scissors, a couple of combs, and get an apprenticeship at a shop. Now you're looking at three years of school. Once you're done, well, you really going to throw away 90% of that education giving guys $15 haircuts, or, put what you spent all that time learning to use and cut women's hair for $90?

I go to an old-school guy who uses scissors, no electric clippers. Took forever to find a decent place that still had scissors.
I don't know if the regulation is state to state or what, but there are different levels.  Some guy came into Sport Clips on day and wanted to be clean shaven with a blade.  They had to tell them they didn't have that liscensing to use a blade.

I don't know that it cuts down on the education a lot, but there are levels.

I go to a real barber shop with a real barber pole out front and rear barber chairs inside. Men's cuts are $10. I toss in $3-5 tip. All the hair cutters are women.

Exactly. I went once and was disappointed yet paid twice as much.

I always have the same person cut my hair as well. I always call to find out if she's there before I go. Never even have to ask for what I want.

I've cut my hair actually a trim,  for a wedding once in the last three years.

In my younger days when I had 2 roommates, I gave roommate A a haircut with a set of clippers. I thought I did a pretty good job for my first time. He asked roommate B how he looked, B said he looked like he got a free haircut. :(
I've never cut anyone else's hair ever again.

If his name ain't Sal or Vito or something similar, it ain't a real barber shop.
All the barbers under the age of 70 around me are women as well. They went specifically to barber school to cut mens hair.

Well there are lots of younger male barbers, but I'm not sure they would know what to do with me hair.

My barber is in his late 70s. His shop is just like Floyd's on The Andy Griffith Show - bunch of old dudes who all have known each other for decades. It's got a wood stove that's still in use.

This barber has been cutting hair his entire adult life. I believe he told me he started when he was in the service. He can free-hand a flat top better than anyone I've ever seen.

He's only open three days a week and doesn't rent a chair to other barbers. The sign says he's open til 4 p.m., but he's liable to leave anytime after 2 if he's empty.
