I am no longer a member of any religious denomination; however, I was raised Catholic and spent 12 years in Catholic school. The high school I attended was run by a Jesuit branch, which has a tradition of scientific leaning. The answer they gave us was this (paraphrased):
"Belief in science does not need to contradict with our religious teachings here. Humans evolved, just like every other animal on the planet, in their
outer form...the body. However, humans are created in the image of God in their
inner form...
the soul."
Not sure how satisfying that answer is, but it is all I've got.
EDIT: Oh, just want to clarify, I have heard other explanations, from other spiritual perspectives, but this is all I've got from traditional Catholic teachings.
