How would you handle this situation? (1 Viewer)

On Dec 21, I PM'd someone from another forum who was advertising a set of wheels for sale.  He was asking $8500 and I offered $6500.  He asked if we could meet in the middle at $7500 and he would cover the shipping.  I agreed to $7500.  He's been out of town, and I replied there's no rush as I won't need them until the spring.  Today, he sent me a note and said, "Wanted to let you know in all fairness that I received a full price offer from a local guy this morning on the wheelset, wanted to know your thoughts?"

How would you respond?

After you sleep with his wife, you go scorched earth on him.  Sign him up as a male escort, hang him in effigy, set a box of turds on fire on his porch - assuming this lowlife has a porch.  Finally, put him in a room with that dolt of a CEO that runs CYDY for a month.  Dr. Nick Riviera or whatever.  You cannot let the bad guys win, Chet.

I see nothing wrong with responding with:

”I’d still like the wheels at our agreed upon price but in case you are asking if I will go higher, no”

Or if you really want them just pay it.

Or if you think the guy is a jerk for even sending it and don’t want to buy them any more then don’t even reply.

Did you send him any money?  If not, although crappy, nothing stopping him from taking the full price offer.  I would just respond with "are you not honoring our agreed upon deal?" and see what he says.

Good for you! Have a great year.

So this is what's going to happen, he is seeing if you will reply, to match the offer or beat it. He'll say great, you were first/I'd rather give it to you.   If you reply and don't match the offer a few days from now he will contact you and say "hey, that deal actually fell through and I felt bad since we technically had a deal first"...

"That's funny, I had a local guy offer to sell me the same wheels for $6500 but I thought we had a deal so I had to turn it down"

I don't like the "want to know your thoughts" comment from the guy.

My thoughts? I thought we had a deal as I agreed to your counter offer.  And I expected you to honor it.

Agree with those who say to just move on - assuming no papers were signed and no money changed hands. Guy got a better deal and I’m willing to bet he needs the extra $1k more than you do.

It’s uncool and not a guy I’d do business with in the future. But not worth any emotional energy.

My response:

Sounds like you had a great trip.  Thx for the suggestions.

I don't know what to say about the wheels.  On one hand, we had a deal.  On the other, I haven't sent you any money.  I see both sides and will honor my side if you decide to go through with it.  If not, there's not much I can do.

LMK what you decide.

Chet

I thought we had a deal. But i guess things changed. Have a good day.

if he comes back later saying deal fell apart, if it is still a value to you, execute on the transaction. Overlook his poor behavior and move on.

@chet without putting a deposit don’t there not much you can do.  I’m sure when you got your 812 they asked for a deposit for your spot in line right?  If it was a friend I’d understand but a random on the internet 🤷

To my thinking waiting to spring to seal the deal allowed complications and changes in circumstances to happen. One of them could be the guy kept on advertising/letting others know the tires were available.
