Being a Packers fan in VA, I think it changes things a little. I don't get to see the daily stuff and insider stuff that people in the GB area see/read/hear, which may be a good thing. I always appreciated Favre and thought of him as a Packer Legend, but since he left GB, I would never pull for him unless we needed his team to beat xxx team for standings or division reasons. If anyone thinks that makes me a bad fan, they can kiss my butt, I don't tell anyone else how to root for their team and I don't need anyone telling me how to root for my team. TIA
You sound like a rational fan. You don't have to root for Favre, and you definitely don't have to root for the Vikings. The part that confuses me is the hate from some of the fans for one of the iconic players in team history - and NFL history. It's just baffling.
He hated us fans first. Then we hated him back. It shouldn't be too difficult of a concept to grasp.
That is so wrong. Even if you think that why can't you get over that and remember all the great years he gave Packer fans.
who are you to tell me how I feel is wrong? Listen, in a few years from now (assuming he's not playing anymore) I'm sure I'll get over it. Of course I remember all the great year and we'll all think back of how lucky we were to have him on our team. But he jerked us around, quit on us and then ended his career on the rivals' team. So for now I'm largely anti-favre.

The thing that gets me in all of this is the Packers fans who have turned on Favre. He's still one of my favorite players ever to play the game, and I went out of my way to get tickets to the Pats/Vikes game earlier this year to get one last chance to see him. I used to buy into the notion that the Green Bay contingent was special - that there was some kind of loyal fanbase who bought shares in the team and sold out the stadium in the freezing cold despite their tiny market and was part of the lore of the NFL. Now I look at them as just one more group of jaded fans who will turn on the greatest player in franchise history and talk about him like just another former player in the era of free agency. This is easily the uncoolest response by a fanbase that I can remember to any event in sports in my lifetime.
No, bostonfred is incorrect. Packer fans revere their Packer legends. They are hailed as heros in this state. Plenty of Packers have gone on to other teams, but have been respected as they exit and welcomed back with open arms when they return. Look no further than our feelings toward Aaron Kampan, a guy that got a fairly raw deal from the font office, but never went out of his way to talk about 'revenge' on the Packers. In fact, Kampan took out a full page newspaper ad thanking the fans for their support. The difference is Favre was less than straightforward in his dealings with Green Bay, and wanted us to believe 'his' version of events. His aim was divide the fan base and paint Ted Thompson as the bad guy. He wanted to enjoy the same control of the team he had when Mike Sherman was in town, and Thompson believed 'control' belonged to the GM.Regardless of which 'side' you took during the Green Bay departure, most reasonable people now feel they were duped by Favre. His off field demeanor was really buried in Green Bay, and the press has readily admitted they kept stories buried out of respect for what Favre had done in Green Bay. Once he hit New York, all bets were off, and it really opened people's eyes to Favre off the field. I can separate off field vs. on field to an extent. I will always, always respect what the guy did on the field. He was a big part of bringing Green Bay back from the abyss. But I can also objectively look at the situation and understand that he wasn't the guy we all thought he was off the field. And that's hard for many of us to justify. Regardless, when he's ready to come back to Green Bay to be inducted into the Ring of Honor, I'll stand up, cheer, and fondly remember all that he meant to the franchise. And I'm not alone on this.
Absurd. Packers fans turned their back on Favre long before these "buried stories" started coming to light. This thread has all the evidence you could ask for of this fact.
Sorry BF, you're just wrong here.

Not really baffling at all. After the Vikings played the Bears Favre made it a point to tell Julius Peppers to beat the Packers in two weeks. Not even the next week, but in two weeks. A Bear victory over the Packers in the last week would knock the Packers out of the playoffs. The Bears Packers game had no bearing on the Vikings or Favre at all. But Favre had to take sides and root against the Packers. Couple this with other stories of Favre openly rooting for the Packer's opponent (calling up Detroit and offering to share the playbook when he was with the Jets, etc.) and it's no wonder the Packer fans don't embrace him. Packer fans cheered him like crazy when he was in Green Bay. He knows as well as anyone what the Packers mean to the city and state and the fans. And yet he can't put his feelings for Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy aside and takes it out on the fans.

No he isn't. There are some Packer fans that turned their back on Favre before he retired. If you don't know that you really don't follow the Packers.

I disagree that he hated the fans.I think he disliked management enough that it did not matter to him what the fans thought at that point.

It's bizarre that you are extrapolating based on a few small pieces of anecdotal evidence.

Any Packer fan that craps on Favre is a moron. Favre had his day and now Rodgers has his. Aaron is the guy the will lead the Pack from here on. Brett Was, Aaron is. Feel appreciative that you can span two QB's with no dropoff.
We're just returning the crap that he left for us. Everyone know the story. He was treated like a God around here but decided that wasn't good enough. He even turned down $20 million to stay retired and be an ambassador to the team.Rodgers has shown a lot of class through it all and is more accurate than Brett and without the negatives.Good luck Brett in your retirement but we are better off with with Rodgers.
Of course, "everyone knows the story". You now have a TEAM LEADER instead of a selfish POS. Ted Thompson may be the best GM in the game right now.The Packers stole Aaron, Charles Woodson, Raji, Jennings, Jones, Starks. etc. They have the smallest market and they will still kick your behind.

Aaron Rodgers is easily the best QB in football right now.
Tom Brady says hi.And while Favre is guilty of many things he was an outstanding team leader. He played every Sunday and typically won. A lot. You don't have to like Favre and plenty of people don't but the guy earned his Hall of Fame stripes with the Packers and anyone who seeks to diminish what he did with Green Bay is, quite frankly and honestly, an idiot. That said, Rodgers has become a terrific quarterback. While many teams spend countless number of years trying to find a decent QB the Packers have now gone nearly two decades straight with an elite one. Credit Ron Wolf and Ted Thompson for that respective stroke of genius.

I have to respectfully disagree. The Packers had some outstanding teams and Favre could not get them to the Super Bowl. People rip Donovan McNabb for his failures in the Championship game but Brett gets a pass because Reggie White came to Green Bay? When all is said and done, Brett is a choker. Reggie Jackson is not called Mr. October because of his work in spring training.

Would you care to elaborate? Dan Marino is is usually eliminated from "The Greatest Ever" argument because he never won the Bowl. Are you telling me that if Rodgers wins the Bowl he is not equal to Favre? Stats are great but QB's seem to be rated by wins. BIG WINS. Brett is a Hall of Famer but if you look at his career from a distance, he should have won more.

This is where the Favre detractors fail. They don't want to give him any credit for his success and helping the Packers. All they want to do is blame him for their losses.Favre had a great career with the Packers and it is purely subjective for you to think he should have won more. And why are you bringing up Rodgers? I didn't say anything about him. Oh, and Marino isn't usually eliminated from "The Greatest Ever" arguments because he is considered one of the best QBs to play the game.

Where are you from that you said Favre was an outstanding leader. You must not live in WI. I've listened to Gilbert Brown and LeRoy Butler over the past 3 years say the opposite. They said Brett was never a leader. He didn't study the game film well, he just wanted to go play. He played great at times but made way to many mistakes to be considered in the likes of Montana, Elway, even Brady. Everything I've heard about Favre was he was an awesome guy when Homgren was around but then he changed when he became HUGE!!! Listen to Chmura talk about him, they used to be best friends, now they don't talk. Remember this to. What team did Favre ever lead to a SB. Reggie White was the leader on the team in 1996, not Favre. I am a Packer fan, and I thought Favre was a great QB, but I never was one who thought he was one of the greats. Way to many TO's to me. I don't think Packers fans will forgive easily. Packer fans are different than most. We feel like we have a stake in the team, like we own part of it, like we have a say in the organization. I don't see Favre getting his praise until he come forward, but that won't happen as long as Ted Thompsen is here. Which is fine with me.

I am not a Brett detractor. I am blindly objective. I do not think that Joe Montana is the greatest QB ever, but most people do. I grew up in Wisconsin. The reason Chmura and Favre don't talk anymore is that Favre broke his ties with him when he was trying to clean up from his drinking and vicodin. Then Chmura had his troubles with the post prom party and that solidified things with Favre and Chmura. You guys can bash Favre all you want. All I know is I have nothing but great memories for what he game to Packer fans when he played. He was a joy to watch and he loved the game. After watching the Packers in the 70s and 80s it was great to see things change.

Incredibly pathetic. It's amazing to me how Packer fans rip on Favre. Favre is one of the key reasons why anybody cares about the Packers again. Like I said, you don't have to like the guy but he was an outstanding player (obviously), a sure-fire first-ballot Hall of Famer and probably one of the Top 2-3 Packers of all time. It's staggering to see Packers fans so obsessed with hating him they seek to diminish his greatness while with Green Bay. The Packers were lucky to have Favre for as long as they did. Now they're lucky to have Rodgers. Consider yourself fortunate as Packers fans that we've been able to see such a high level of QB play for nearly two decades. First Favre, now Rodgers. I think it's safe to say a lot of teams would kill to have one of those guys. Green Bay has been fortunate to have both.

Aaron Rodgers is easily the best QB in football right now.

How? If you are trying to pin the loss against the Giants you will fail. There are many reasons the Packers lost that game. Also, I suggest you look at some of the games that season that Favre helped them win to get to 13-3. The fact you think you are objective is a joke.

This just isn't true. I've heard both of them as well and they both have said Favre was a leader, just not a vocal leader. He led by how he played.

Pathetic :goodposting:
This just isn't true. I've heard both of them as well and they both have said Favre was a leader, just not a vocal leader. He led by how he played.
Exactly!

Aaron Rodgers is easily the best QB in football right now.

 :goodposting: I agree with everything you are saying here 100%.I will also add that the way Rodgers is playing, I think he will end up being a better QB than Favre.
Favre is a Top 5-10 all-time QB in my opinion. That would be something if Rodgers became better than Favre. Include the vastly under-appreciated Starr and perhaps we should change Green Bay's team name from the Packers to Quarterback Central. :goodposting:

It was the right move at the time, though it could have been done sooner. Rogers is a great QB.
I knew Rogers was good but watching the game very close last night I never realized what a quick release and great arm he has. Very impressive.
Ross Tucker (ESPN): “I know this sounds crazy, but Aaron Rodgers throws like Dan Marino & moves like Steve Young. He really does. I’m still not over it.”That is one scary hybrid.
One of many reasons why this NFC Championship game is going to be something special.

I am not a Packer Fan!! I am an objective football watcher who thinks that Roger Staubach, Johnny U, Bart Starr. Terry Bradshaw, Bobby Layne, Dan Marino, Dan Fouts, and Otto Graham were better than/or equal to Brett. As a Packer fan, it was great to enjoy watching him play, as an NFL fan, he was a great passer who amassed great stats but didn't win titles. His interceptions are as memorable as his TD's.

You are not objective and which is it...you contradicted yourself in that post. You wrote "I'm not a Packer fan" then you wrote "As a Packer fan". :banned:

I mistyped and I will have to remove my Bills tattoo. As an NFL fan, I enjoyed watching Brett play. Besides my ignorance, are you defending Favre?

I disagree that he hated the fans.I think he disliked management enough that it did not matter to him what the fans thought at that point.
you're right. I concede that point. BUT...as a fan, I still feel slighted by what he did.

I can't wait for the day when Aaron Rodgers plays a game like he did last night, and Brett Favre isn't mentioned.
It may never happen. Young had to deal with Montana's ghost for a while. Enjoy the fact that two HOF QB are back to back in the pack. (I know that it is premature for Aaron)

i will say this as a packers fan i do not feel as nervous when rodgers is on the field as i did when brett was under center because you never knew if it was going to be a 6 interceptoin game or an awesome pass to andre bad moon on the rise rison

As a Lion fan who has no dog in the fight. I take Rogers over any QB right now.
I would too. There are other great ones obviously, but his combination of accuracy, arm strength, and mobility are superior to anybody else in the game. The fact that he has a work/study ethic similar to the other greats is also notable. I would also take him over Favre in his prime.

JUDAS!!!
It did taste horrible coming out, but I don't think it can be denied anymore. This does make the NFC North much more credible...maybe the east coast will take notice!!
The NFC north has shown this year that they are the class of the NFC. Even the Vikings will bounce back next season with solid QB play (Webb looked solid and he's as green as grass). The Lions are no longer a laughing stock and could approach 9 or 10 wins if the ball bounces for them a bit. They have the best weapon in the NFL at receiver and if Stafford can stay healthy they will challenge for the playoffs (big if). The Falcons were pretenders but they have a lot of pieces in place. Problem for them is that Turner is almost at that magic number of 30. So the window with him (and that offense really revolves around him) is closing quickly. The Saints are tough but they obviously faltered so who knows. The East is the most overrated division in the league. East Coast bias in full effect here because they are big markets. But the glass of the east was 0-3 against the class of the North this season. Plus they are weaker right on down the line as well. Washington < Detroit.

NFC North is going to be real tough next year. Look at Detroit against the final 4 playoff teams: 1-1 against the Pack, seemingly beat the Bears week 1, and then lost to the Bears by 4 with their 3rd string QB, and choked away the Jets game in the final minute. If those are the supposed 4 best teams in football, it makes me feel good about the Lions next year.

They will still get it from the media when Rodgers gets hurt. (A matter of time imo-given history) They have a legitimate contender...and no b/u plan if he gets hurt. Terrible. If they somehow make it w/o him getting hurt...they're lucky. This may not have as much to do w/ Favre as letting 2 rookies be behind Rodgers on a contender. Inexcusable...and I hope it bites them i the butt. I can't believe people aren't making more out of it. I would be on the phone w/ the Bucs if they really want to let Garcia go. (If I were the Pack!)
Garcia is still available.
