I wanna be rich (2 Viewers)

Man... this is all I want also Otis.. not so much being rich.. but just having enough jack that I don't have to work another day.

I also play the lottery like a poor bum... about $10 a time but only about 5-6 times a year... hoping to hit it rich so I don't have to pull another tooth or do a crown the rest of my days.

I figure I need about 5 M and at 36 I don't even have 1M yet.... so I really don't know how anyone does it without adopting the Mr. Money Mustache method.. which unfortunately is just too extreme for me.

 You start a lot of complaining threads.
Do you view this as a complaining thread? If so, why? Is it bad to not want to have to go to work? Is it bad to inquire about the best way to collect ~9MM?
Yeah, I would characterize this as a complaining thread. Sure, he's got the shticky hook of "tell me how to get boatloads." But the subtext seems to be "I am unhappy with my current situation."
I'd hardly consider myself unhappy with my current situation. I just would prefer not to have to go to a job every day. Maybe I could have taken my kids to the zoo today instead. I love the zoo.

FINALLY, someone who understands.

By the way, never realized how many of you guys hate the zoo. That's not cool. Oh, the zoo and guitars.

Better yet, get paid to go to the zoo. Work there.

the dude rides his bike EVERYWHERE and does all his own construction...

There's a point where I put my foot down... and that's riding a bike and doing construction... I'd rather do dental work than those things

I had the rich or levels of assets conversation with a buddy of mine about 15 years ago when we both started with the same company. $1MM is a big milestone for sure but you are far from set. $3MM and you can get by the rest of your life on what it makes if you're solid with how you invest it and live within the means of it. Once you get to $5MM it's a little bit different and obviously can indulge a bit. Once you are $10MM and up I'd say you can park the bus and do what you want. Granted it all depends on where you live and the lifestyle you are accustomed to or want to live. I also view these numbers through an after tax prism. It's the old CPA in me, but I have a tax rate input on my asset sheet that deducts tax liability for asset sales or cashing in of retirement accounts to give me a true after tax net.

You can adopt the methods without taking them to the extreme IMO. There is a lot of wisdom there.

interestingly enough this is pretty much the way I see it... 3MM and i think you can get by in a low cost area like the midwest and live a very adequate albeit not fancy life

5MM and you can retire and enjoy some swanky stuff

10MM and unless you live on the coast and couldn't see yourself driving anything other than an italian luxury car you should be able to do pretty much whatever you want, when you want.

Unfortunately as inflation hits someday I expect 5MM to be the new 3MM so that's my goal.

So far I've made money on both of the first two homes I owned;
Counting the money you put into it and transaction costs?
Correct.
Great, now I'm just realizing slapdash is going to hate me even more now that he knows I'm great at real estate.
Hate? I'm just here to take shots while you're still kicking.
It won't be much longer, so you best be quick about it.

You could have taken them today or tomorrow or some other day. You just can't do it every day. How much leave do you take each year?

I hate it when Slapdash and Politician Spock post in the same thread. That is all.
It's awesome, but I have avatars turned off at work anyways.
Hold the phone. We can do that? When the board migrated a few years ago, I could never find that option like I could on the previous version. I used to have it turned off, too, for work.
There is no option. You have to use adblock through Firefox or Chrome maybe.

Honestly don't get the luxury cars thing anymore. I used to see a guy driving around in a Ferrari when I was like 20 and think "lucky *******, that looks so awesome, I need one." Nowadays I see that and my first thought is more like, "pff, doosh." I'm not sure what caused the perspective shift. Having kids maybe?

I sure would love one of those old Broncos, restored. If I had a desperate need to buy a super fast sports car, it would be one of the current Corvettes -- they're beautiful, and what bang for the buck. But the high end stuff? I just totally don't see it.

Less than I probably should.

I read almost everything the guy writes and although I think he spouts a TON of BS and I think he's really not retired because he both does contruction AND is a full time writer and website maintainer.. both of which are jobs.... despite all that I think there is a lot to be gained by the things he writes.

Retirement can be defined in a number of ways.. MMM defines it as doing whatever you want and not being a slave to anyone else... and that's a fine definition.

Mine would be that I basically didn't have to ever do anything I didn't want to do (within reason). LIke if something breaks in my house.. I could choose to fix it... but if I'd rather continue sipping my scotch by the beach/pool and pay for it to be done, I can afford that easily as well... Basically a hedonistic, lazy lifestyle.

I would much rather have an older muscle car. Maybe a 63 split window vette. Or a 69 Camaro SS.

Otis, if there is one thing I can tell you about vehicles.. it's that old stuff is completely overrated in every way. I have and maintain an older British convertible and an old boat and I have come to HATE maintaining old things and really appreciate the advances that have been made in modern vehicles.

I'm not talking about bluetooth speakers in your car or an 8" heads up display w/ GPS or a tailgate that closes itself.. a lot of stuff they pack into today's cars is just garbage that is going to break.

But modern breaks, seatbelts, attachments for car seats, airbags, smooth transmissions, etc... that is all really good stuff... screw old stuff... and I'm speaking from having way too much experience

Serious response: get an investment group together, find a couple partners and get in real estate. As an atty that already reduces a lot of your costs. Put together a "fund" of qualified investors and partner with a good local builder with good ties. Start small and go from there.

Fwiw, can't wait to do this on my own at the right time either regionally or if biz keeps going the right way on a more national scope.

I always thought that taking the shells from some of the old school steel-body beasts, and modernizing them with modern breaks, air bags, etc and selling them to the parents of teenagers would be a pretty fun way to make money, and cut down on the number of fatalities when these little snowflakes decide to wrap their fiberglass sweet 16 present around a bridge abutment.

Understood. This would be a weekend car for tinkering around town or down to the beach. For a regular driving car, regular modern stuff is the way to go.

Maintenance issues are overated. My family had a 63 split window. Once my step father and I finished the restore there was no huge time/money investment in maintaining it.

I really try not to be that guy. I knew what you meant so no big. But it was catching.

Mrs. S just wrote an account last night for a guy who founded a website that you've heard of... and that you'd look at and go, "THAT made someone ridiculously wealthy?!?!?"

But he solved a problem people were having. And there's value in that.

1. Identify your 5-10 biggest problems that are not, "I don't have as much money as I want". Are any of them shared by others (i.e., not just O problems)?

2. Find an original solution to that problem. The more people who share your problem, the better.

3. ?

4. Profit.
Finally something constructive.

Wanna partner?
I have a giant schwantz. Pants are difficult. That kind of problem?

Got a notice? Time for Otis!

Call Otis. He's not bad, for a guy from New York.

PLASTICS.

(seriously, get that group together and invest in real estate. a lot of structural change in the housing market with an evolution of consumer preferences, and well off regions such as NY have pockets of great opportunity for areas that have witnessed strong market constraints (i.e. NIMBYism and 40 years of anti-growth policies) such as Long Island.

This makes me sad.

Mainly because my penis does not make for any problems whatsoever for putting on my pants. I didn't realize this could be an issue and now I have this pants problem envy.

Wait, weren't you the one who dropped $100+ on a Pebble? Maybe "forgetting" where your money goes is part of your problem.

ETA:

Holy crap. I've never done anything on this Kickstarter before, but I thought this iPhone-linked watch was pretty cool, and plunked down 115 bucks or so to back it and lock up a watch for myself. They had like a hundred grand in backers at that point. Not a big deal I figured.
Otis sporting the white Pebble this morning with the dressed up look

I don't care what Zed thinks, I think it's a pretty cool looking watch.

Casual, different, etc. If I wanted another dressy watch with a black leather band, I have plenty.
Looks like your watch slot might be taking up more than 80 investable dollars.

Well, you got that right- the link you provided in the other thread couldn't be more clear how wrong you are.

Even if you are as bad as it seems when it comes to business, just think about it- do your numbers seem reasonable to you?
Christ you are trolling this thread pretty hard.

But since you insist, post up so links, facts, reports on the McDdonalds franchisees. Plenty of people will read them.
Here's your post from the other thread with your link in it.
No, I wanted YOU to add some new information. Some substance. Plenty of people will read good info on the topic.
What is there to add? Directly from your link:

Franchises by the gross

Most franchisors don't provide net profit figures. Here's a sampler of gross revenues and profits after cost of goods. Remember, you'll still have to calculate your rent, labor costs, taxes, and other expenses to come up with a final answer to how much you'll bring home.

And:
Fast-food titan McDonald's breaks down earnings claims based on three categories of store volume: $1.3 million in sales, $1.5 million, and $1.7 million. All produced gross margins of 70 percent or better and an operating income margin of at least 24.6 percent. Out of that franchisees still must pay rent, income taxes, and other fees.

Enough substance for you or would you prefer to keep pulling numbers out of your ###?
