I also play the lottery like a poor bum... about $10 a time but only about 5-6 times a year... hoping to hit it rich so I don't have to pull another tooth or do a crown the rest of my days.

I figure I need about 5 M and at 36 I don't even have 1M yet.... so I really don't know how anyone does it without adopting the Mr. Money Mustache method.. which unfortunately is just too extreme for me.

Yeah, I would characterize this as a complaining thread. Sure, he's got the shticky hook of "tell me how to get boatloads." But the subtext seems to be "I am unhappy with my current situation."

I'd hardly consider myself unhappy with my current situation. I just would prefer not to have to go to a job every day. Maybe I could have taken my kids to the zoo today instead. I love the zoo.

There's a point where I put my foot down... and that's riding a bike and doing construction... I'd rather do dental work than those things

I had the rich or levels of assets conversation with a buddy of mine about 15 years ago when we both started with the same company. $1MM is a big milestone for sure but you are far from set. $3MM and you can get by the rest of your life on what it makes if you're solid with how you invest it and live within the means of it. Once you get to $5MM it's a little bit different and obviously can indulge a bit. Once you are $10MM and up I'd say you can park the bus and do what you want. Granted it all depends on where you live and the lifestyle you are accustomed to or want to live. I also view these numbers through an after tax prism. It's the old CPA in me, but I have a tax rate input on my asset sheet that deducts tax liability for asset sales or cashing in of retirement accounts to give me a true after tax net.

interestingly enough this is pretty much the way I see it... 3MM and i think you can get by in a low cost area like the midwest and live a very adequate albeit not fancy life

5MM and you can retire and enjoy some swanky stuff

10MM and unless you live on the coast and couldn't see yourself driving anything other than an italian luxury car you should be able to do pretty much whatever you want, when you want.

Unfortunately as inflation hits someday I expect 5MM to be the new 3MM so that's my goal.

I read almost everything the guy writes and although I think he spouts a TON of BS and I think he's really not retired because he both does contruction AND is a full time writer and website maintainer.. both of which are jobs.... despite all that I think there is a lot to be gained by the things he writes.

Retirement can be defined in a number of ways.. MMM defines it as doing whatever you want and not being a slave to anyone else... and that's a fine definition.

Mine would be that I basically didn't have to ever do anything I didn't want to do (within reason). LIke if something breaks in my house.. I could choose to fix it... but if I'd rather continue sipping my scotch by the beach/pool and pay for it to be done, I can afford that easily as well... Basically a hedonistic, lazy lifestyle.

I have and maintain an older British convertible and an old boat and I have come to HATE maintaining old things and really appreciate the advances that have been made in modern vehicles.

I'm not talking about bluetooth speakers in your car or an 8" heads up display w/ GPS or a tailgate that closes itself.. a lot of stuff they pack into today's cars is just garbage that is going to break.

But modern breaks, seatbelts, attachments for car seats, airbags, smooth transmissions, etc... that is all really good stuff... screw old stuff... and I'm speaking from having way too much experience

Serious response: get an investment group together, find a couple partners and get in real estate. As an atty that already reduces a lot of your costs. Put together a "fund" of qualified investors and partner with a good local builder with good ties. Start small and go from there.

Fwiw, can't wait to do this on my own at the right time either regionally or if biz keeps going the right way on a more national scope.

Understood. This would be a weekend car for tinkering around town or down to the beach. For a regular driving car, regular modern stuff is the way to go.

Maintenance issues are overated. My family had a 63 split window. Once my step father and I finished the restore there was no huge time/money investment in maintaining it.
