Spent some time with both Elmer T. Lee and his little brother, Ancient Ancient Age, last night.ETL was absolutely delicious. It's not terribly distinguishable from AAA. Both have those rich baking spices and beautiful overall balance.I'm excited about some more time to flush out the differences.I know I've preached about AAA before, but seriously, if you are a fan of Elmer and care at all about saving a few bucks, pick up a bottle of AAA. Very similar profile, same mashbill, same proof, but a third of the price.Elmer's certainly worth the $30. AAA just happens to be crazy value at $12
I'll have to check this out. Big fan of Elmer T. Lee. Currently working on some Knob Creek, but I don't like it near as much. A little rough right out of the gate for my palate. Had Eagle Rare for the first time last weekend (don't drink often, and generally then it's a bucket of macro brews watching a game) and that was damn good too.
Didn't they stop making AAA?

That is what a distributer rep at a local shop told me earlier this week.

For the love of God I hope that's not true.

I'm crossing my fingers that you (he) meant AAA 10 Year instead of AAA 10 Star. The former is what 99% of people are referring to when they say Ancient Ancient Age.

Not that losing 10 Year wasn't a big loss, but that happened a year or so ago, and was impossible to find anyway.

Costco has Johnnie Walker Gold Reserve limited edition on sale for $49 ($20 savings, marked down from $69). Not bad considering my local liquor store is selling it for $84

Enjoying a nice Evan Williams OTR right now.

I know: cheap swill. But although good Bourbon is better than cheap Bourbon, cheap Bourbon is still better than everything else. Cheers.

My partner has a bottle of pappy 20 year on his desk. When we move into our new office the first week of June, the 3 of us will celebrate by opening it.

OTR?
On the rocks.Picked up 4 roses small batch - about to open.
Almost bought that today over the Woodford. They had single barrel too...was tempted to walk out with like $250 in bourbon but I think the wife may not have liked that

Owner stopped and talked to me while I was browsing - said they were getting a select single barrel on Monday and told me I should come back. I'm tempted to go back and pick it up too.

Four Roses is severely underrated. Been enjoying the small batch all afternoon. The new Limited Edition should be coming out in the next week.. Looking forward to seeing if I can get my hands on a bottle or two

New distillery opened up in my hometown. Anybody ever joined any of these ambassador programs? Or should I just save the $60 and likely get twice the bourbon when the first bottles are released in 4 years?

I went to the grand opening and was impressed. Ken Lewis knows how to run a business and has incredible connections in the industry.

I think they will start distilling soon if they haven't already.

I signed up for the ranger program because I figure even if it's only $25 bourbon, the experience is worth something and I think you'll get to bottle your own bottle if you want, which is kinda cool.

They had some of their OKI bourbon at the grand opening sourced from MGPI and it was good, I'm curious to see what they'll do on their own

Curious what people are going to for their everyday drinkin' bourbon. I keep going back to Elijah Craig 12 or Four Roses Small Batch

Ahhh, what a great thread. Now if you want to get into the good stuff - Pappy Van Winkle 20 year is amazing. Haven't had the 23 year since it's over $200/bottle.Mud
 wish I was a whiskey guy in the days when you could actually find stuff like Pappy 20/23 and had to make a decision on whether it was worth shelling out the cash for

Who's touring Woodford tomorrow? This guy.

Went to the Wild Turkey distillery on Monday, and damn, that's an impressive operation. They have 475,000 barrels of bourbon on site being aged from 6-12 years at any time. We also met Jimmy, the head taster, who's been working at the distillery for 56 years. Rare Breed was definitely the best of their offerings.

Saw a presentation from the guy that owns Maker's Mark today. He's also an aerospace engineer and a lawyer. He went into the family distilling business after a rocket he designed took off, turned a 180 and exploded into the building where his company was housed. I also had the opportunity to liberally sample their stuff.

I've also had Buffalo Trace and Four Roses since I got here on Sunday. Based on my experience solely in Kentucky to date, I'd rate them:

Buffalo Trace

Maker's Mark

Wild Turkey Rare Breed

Four Roses

Everything else Wild Turkey makes
Our lists are pretty similar - I'd be curious about your opinion on Eagle Rare.
Eagle Rare is absolutley the best taste to price ratio in the entire whiskey field. I keep thinking that they'll figure out their mistake and jack up the price by $10 a bottle one day and it will make me sad.
welcome to that day... I've seen eagle rare at $30+ in spots where it was $25 just a couple months ago

I've noticed here that Eagle Rare always fluctuates between the high 20s to low 30s in price. When on sale it is usually $27. They finally have Angel's Envy in NC now. I'm going to have to buy some soon!

A part of me really wants to dislike Angel's Envy because it's not traditional and takes on untraditional flavors from the extra aging in other casks, but I'll be damned if that's not a tasty whiskey. The rye is finished in rum barrels and takes on a nice coconutty flavor.

The place I go to usually has the cheapest prices in the state of Kentucky. Occasionally there is another spot that beats them by a couple pennies on some bottles. The price there has gone up on 750mL bottles by 20% since January. I could walk in and get a handle of eagle rare for < $45 in January and now it doesn't stay on the shelf at $50 with a limit of 1 per customer.

Balcones True Blue. Simple, not complicated. Sweet flavor. Doesn't compare to the single malt but overall ok.

I bought some Angel's Envy, and I am liking it. I bought the straight bourbon whiskey. I didn't see the rye. It cost $45 before taxes in the liquor store. I noticed Eagle Rare 10 year was selling at $30 today. I wish I had some Eagle Rare left to give it a taste comparison to the Angel's Envy. Anyway, this is very good, and easy to drink.

I went bourbon hunting today. Hit up ~15 liquor stores hoping to find some hard to find bottles.

Ended up getting 2 bottles of Elmer T Lee, 1 bottle of Elmer T Lee Commerative, 1 bottle of Baby Saz and some bottles of Elijah Craig 12 and Weller 107 for my bunker

Still on the lookout for Four Roses 125th, the Four Roses 2014 Limited Edition, Booker's 25th as well as more Elmer T Lee Commerative, but those things are hard to find in the wild!

 the rye is a little harder to find and is usually around $70/bottle, but holy #### is it good
