Has anyone found any of the recently released Four Roses Limited Edition? Sold out pretty much as it was being out on the shelves around here.

Picked up my normal Eagle Rare and based on the recommendations here popped for the Angels Envy too. Impressed! Far and away the smoothest bourbon I've ever tasted! Thanks guys!

Which was the best bourbon you'd ever had? the eagle rare or the angel's envy?

A couple months back, I managed to get free tickets to a bourbon tasting event in Louisville. It takes me less than 2 hours to get there, so I figured why not? I'm up for a random adventure.

While I was there, I ended up chatting with a couple that were standing by the same table as me, turns out they had come down from Cincinnati too. By the end of the night, they invited me to a bourbon tasting they were planning at their place. She owns a local restaurant and he works for Porsche, so I was excited to see what they would do.

It sounds like you spent some time in Heaven, Guster. Which was your favorite out of those?
It's really hard to pin down because they were all pretty good and I was pretty tanked by the end

I'd say the High West and James E Pepper were the worst of the group

I was really impressed with the Evan Williams 23, Parker's Heritage, William Heavenhill and Willett 23.

I would gladly have any of the pours again

I'm hesitant to say that the Angel Envy is my new favorite based on one evening's tippling. I'll continue to evaluate the situation and get back to you!

She owns Ferrari's Little Italy and lives in Madeira

Not a bourbon drinker, but my wife is looking for some J.R. Ewing memorial bourbon. She keeps reading about it but can't find it anywhere. Would anyone happen to know where she could find it?

Yea thanks. They gave us the same ol' links from February that she read four months ago. If you don't know, it's ok to just say so or, better yet, not try to be clever and post a useless response.
The fifth link shows you can get it at Binny's moron.

Shame you couldn't have just posted that link instead of being a snarky doosh. But then again, you are you. So it's to be expected.

"Your craft rye whiskey is probably from a factory distillery in Indiana"

Not really news but an interesting read. This link has a list of all the labels using the MGPI juice: http://recenteats.blogspot.com/p/the-complete-list-of-american-whiskey.html

(It also lists every distillery by state and their labels sold, nice reference source)

Thanks for the info chauncey. I've known that this business was a tad incestuous, but this is ridiculous...

At least now I'll be able to knowingly patronize those folks who maker their own...

This is a reason why I really don't see the big market or need for craft whiskey the way there is with craft beer.

Whiskey and bourbon are well-defined and regulated. Even if the big boys wanted to have a race to the bottom, they couldn't (Beam and JD have already gone as far as they can). I'm all for competition and innovation, but the big boys are already doing whiskey quite well.

That, combined with the massive barrier to entry for guys selling their own juice, makes it an incredible road to hoe.

Still a fan of just plain old Jameson.
It's the go to cheap stuff for sure. Regular JD is awful.
This is why I stick to bourbon and American whiskey. $25 won't get you a "cheap 80 proof go to". It'll get you a choice of over a dozen outstanding bourbons/ryes (I agree though, that JD is absolutely not in that group).

If you just want something 80-proof and highly drinkable, a $10 bill will about cover you.

I came home from work one night this week and the wife had made a pork tenderloin - it was delicious. I tell her how great it was and then this conversation ensued:

HER: "I used a new recipe. So you really liked it?"

ME: "Yep, it was fantastic - what did you do?"

HER: "Well, it called for whiskey so I just used the one you left sitting out last night. It said whiskey."

ME (nervously): "You used my bourbon? Which one?"

HER: "I think it was Angel something - I put it away"

ME: "How much did you use?"

HER: "It called for a cup."

ME:

1) Booker's
2) Woodford Reserve

3) Blanton's

4) Baker's

5) Basil Hayden's

6) Eagle Rare

7) Buffalo Trace

8) Maker's 46

9) Old Granddad 114
10) Maker's Mark

11) Lexington

12) Ridgemont Reserve
13) Bulleit

14) Rebel Yell

15) Four Roses

It's been a while.

Basil Hayden's is VERY good. If it had a little more texture to it, it would be higher. Wonderful flavor, just the right amount of heat.

I just recently had a position change and a colleague and I decided that we needed to do something special each time we closed a deal so we decided to buy a nice bottle of alcohol, and when a deal closes, we will have a glass. We went with this for our first bottle (dewars signature). any opinions?

http://www.holidaywinecellar.com/p-9493-dewars-signature-blended-scotch.aspx?utm_source=froogle&utm_medium=csc&utm_content=9987&utm_campaign=Spirits&gclid=CjwKEAjwpcGfBRDni__JqrTIqx4SJAB9BpSO3qfMcxJZQLvCAeCXavbXeY4T8-w04oIOI8QLTnBfZhoCo2Hw_wcB

Also, any suggestions for what our next bottle should be? Doesnt have to be scotch. Can be in similar price range give or take $100. 1 deal closed a month would be killing it, so its not like we are going to be drinking this stuff weekly.

Woodford Reserve Double Oaked
Rock Hill Farms Single Barrel - sorry you missed this one; it's exceptional.

This thread needs a heathen. Gimme a $20 handle of Evan Williams anyday. For a man of my means and whiskey drinking capacity its just the thing.

Put it next to JD and I couldn't tell you the difference and its half the price.

I might like the nicer whiskies but it just seems like a sucker bet for me.

Don't get me wrong I'll drink YOUR nice whiskey if you're sharing. But if I'm buying we're getting after the Evan.

I like the spirit of your post, but I must take issue with one thing. Yes, you can tell the difference between Evan and Jack. Evan is much, much better and an honest proof. Jack, and it's noxious banana flavor is still the only aged whiskey I'd rather just not drink.

I love some cheap bourbon. If you like Evan, you might also try Evan White Label, any Heaven Hill Bottled In Bond, Virgin 101, or Ezra Brooks. All made at the same place, and around the same price point.

Ancient Ancient Age 10 Star, is my favorite non-Heaven Hill cheap bourbon and it's even cheaper than Evan.

I've got a couple bottles of that at home, so no need to try it there

Saturday I was promised a bottle of Pappy Van WInkle 23 year old for Opening Sunday of the NFL season. Fingers crossed!!

Yesterday was a great day, found out I have a bottle of Old Blowhard coming my way along with the Pappy, NFL Sunday can't get here qucik enough :tebow:

I really love Angel's Envy. I think the finishing in port barrels really smooths out the finish of the bourbon. It is so smooth with minimal ethanol burn on the finish. I highly recommend it.

While I do enjoy the smoothness of the Angels Envy, I've come to the conclusion that after more than one, the port sweetness is a bit cloying. I'll continue to enjoy it when I'm being a lightweight, but when having more than one (~99% of the time) I'll stick with standbys like Eagle Rare or the single batches from Evan Williams and Russels Reserve.

I've kept the rest of this bottle hidden but polishing it off tonight. Thought I would bump this in memoriam of the wasted bourbon.

Restocked a bit yesterday... picked up 2 bottles of Willett 2 year rye, a bottle of Willett 10 year bourbon and 10 bottles of Elmer T Lee :banned:

Went cheap, with Henry McKenna on sale at the ABC.

First taste test - pretty damn good. Might be the best value hard liquor I've had.
