10 Best Budget Bourbons

This article is a year old but figured I'd share it here for any of you guys who aren't afraid to reach for those middle shelves.

Old Forester

Buffalo Trace

Elijah Craig 12

Wild Turkey 101

1792 Ridgemont Reserve

Bulleit

Old Weller Antique 107

Four Roses Small Batch

McAffee's Benchmark

Evan William's Single Barrel

Most of these bottles are listed in the $25-$30 range. I honestly didn't know these were "budget bourbons" before now, I must be poorer than I thought. The bolded bourbons make up probably 80% of the bottles I buy and are all solid. Never tried the others.
I've been pimping McAfee's Benchmark for a decade. Far from the best sipper out there, but the value is insane. At roughly $16 a handle, it's great for cocktails or shots. I almost always have a handle in the bar for shots, cocktails (aside from Manhattans) and guests. Anything I spend $25+ a fifth on, I'm drinking straight.

If your buddy likes Buffalo Trace (which is my fav value bourbon) but you want to get something nicer get Eagle Rare. same distillery, Eagle is the higher end, but not too pricey. It's fantastic.
thank you sir.
And for something even a little more special, look for a bottle of the Buffalo Trace Single Oak Project. It's an awesome project they are doing to try to find the perfect combination of oak barrels, age, etc. It makes a great gift for someone into bourbon. http://www.singleoakproject.com
Most of those are kinda terrible, especially at that price point.
Mine have been hit or miss, but it's fun and different.

I tried some Old Forrester 1870 Small Batch the other day. It was only released in six states. This stuff was smooooooooth. My buddy and I both looked at each with a WTF look on our faces because we just couldn't believe it. He was able to find a couple bottles online and ordered them up. It's a bit hard to find, but well worth the trouble.
It's releasing national this month, so should become easier to find
Awesome!

This is different from the 1870 Original Batch? I didn't see small batch when I searched it.

yes, that's it. It has "original batch" stamped across the front. My understanding is that they did a very small run of it, but it sounds like they are making more.

The 1870 label will be a permanent part of the "Whiskey Row" line extension of the Old Forester brand. There will be 3 more releases under their "Whiskey Row" series, which are actually led by Master Distiller Chris Morris's protégée Marianne Barnes. Apparently they are trying to match similar approaches to 4 different bourbons they made on Whiskey Row in Louisville between 1870 (when Brown Forman started blending whiskey) and 1923 (when they moved out of Whiskey Row). Not sure the world really needs 7 different options of Old Forester (these 4 + the current 86 proof, 100 proof and Birthday Bourbon), so should be interesting to see how they position the other releases.

Thanks for the info. If the new ones are anything like the 1870, I'll be buying them.

For those bourbon lovers out there a must see is

Bourbontucky, its on the Audience channel, 239 on DirecTV

A 1.5 hour show on the history of Bourbon

I've become a big fan of Sazeracs after my recent trip to New Orleans.
I love them!
Ordered all the necessary ingredients online (good luck finding peychauds bitters on a shelf).
After my NO trip a few years back, I had the same reaction. Found Peychaud's bitters in my local liquor store in about 5 minutes. This was in Orlando, you live in NYC, seems like it would be even easier there. Are they really that hard to find?

Yeah, in my experience there are two types of liquor stores in the city. There are the ones that are glorified liquor bodegas that only stock Angostura and there are the full service ones that stock a billion types of bitters (Regan's, Fee brothers, The Bitter Truth etc.). The second type will almost always have Peychaud's. FWIW, I really enjoy substituting The Bitter Truth Creole Bitters for Peychaud's in a Sazerac. It's a little less aggressive with the anise in favor of other spices which I like since the absinthe or Herbsaint is already providing a lot of anise in the drink. It does make the final drink a tad less sweet.

Find a decent store that carries product distributed by Sazerac Company as that is who distributes Peychaud's. If you like bourbon then look for Blantons, Buffalo Trace, Ancient Age, EH Taylor, etc...Ask him to talk to the purveyor who supplies him with those bourbon to order some Peychaud's

I'm sure you can find them but apparently none of my local spots had them. Just don't move on a regular basis

I have a really cool opportunity lined up in mid-April to do some tasting/selections of 3-5 private barrels from a couple bourbon distilleries. Should be an amazing, once-in-a-lifetime experience.

In the meantime, I've been spending some time trying to edjumicate my palette so I can better discern difference between offerings. :banned:

Been riding out the cold weather with a rotation of Four Roses Small Batch, Dickel 12 and Fighting ####.

I don't know that 4R is my favorite bourbon, but they are so good at what they do. That fruity/floral sweetness they pull off is so delicious and unique.

For those that like a good, affordable rye, looks like the new Rittenhouse isn't nearly as good as the old. The old stuff was distilled by Brown-Forman while Heaven Hill was getting back up to speed. The new stuff is from HH (DSP KY 1) and from every review I've read, is a huge step down. If you can still find the Brown-Forman stuff (DSP KY 354), grab a couple bottles.

I still haven't been able to get my hands on a bottle of Rittenhouse so I wouldn't know but that does seem surprising. I think of Brown Forman as a distiller that makes a bunch of crap except for old Forester and Woodford Reserve while Heaven Hill generally makes great stuff all around.

Thank you for posting this. I recently started drinking a little whiskey again. I generally drink my bourbon neat but will drink it on the rocks occasionally. The list is going to be my starting point. The first bottle I purchased was Bulleit. It is my new favorite sipping whiskey. I cannot wait to try another.

I thought we had a separate scotch thread but I searched and couldn't find it.

Going with The Balvenie 14 YO Caribbean Cask tonight.
Very nice! I'm polishing off my bottle of Macallan 18
I'm not a traditional hard liquor guy but have always preferred the single malts when the mood strikes me. Oban and Dalwhinnie being my personal favorites. Reading through this thread, it seems there has been a boom of small distilleries not unlike the explosion of micro-breweries.

Sounds like there are some very good US offerings without the big, imported price tag?

If you can find an American single malt that touches the stuff I've had from Scotland let me know because I'll be all over it.

It was more of a question - seeing "smoothest I've ever had" type comments and small batch references...

Reading through it, it seems like they are talking about bourbon/rye, while you're talking about scotch (it's all whiskey, though)

I have decided to stumble into the world of Scotch.

I am very fortunate to have a mentor(co-worker who likes to travel to Kentucky twice a year to go on whiskey tours). He seems very knowledgeable to a neophyte like myself.

My introductory bottle is a 12 year Tomatin Single Malt. I had it on the rocks. It burns a little, but I like it.

I have tried all these besides the Benchmark, but the Bulleit bourbon is my favorite from these listed.

Just gifted a bottle of Noah's Hill Bourbon. Will enjoy some tonight
Anyone know a good spot to get an older age-statement (15yr / wax top) bottle of this?

Had a pour of it at a local pub last weekend and it's been on my mind ever since. Fantastic Bourbon.
you'd have to look on the secondary market - craigslist, bottlespot, facebook groups, dustybid, something like that

oh and it'll cost you around $275 probably

Not a bottle of the new non-age-stated stuff here locally for $45. I'll give it a shot and see how that goes.

Right, NAS is around $45. If you look at the little side label, look for something from 2015. It'll say 15-##. 15 is the year and ## is the batch. I loved batch 11 but can't find it anymore.

The stuff from 2015 is a bit older than some of the previous NAS Noah's due to some supply issues. Basically the story I was told is they have had to take stock that might have gone into Willett Family Estate and pull it into their other labels because of sourcing issues.
