[icon]'s whiskey flipping thread (1 Viewer)

My introductory bottle is a 12 year Tomatin Single Malt. I had it on the rocks. It burns a little, but I like it.
Funny enough just did the distillery tour and brought a bit of it back. (During they tour they showed off their 1967 barrels that are waiting for a limited edition 50 year - one wonders how that is different from the typical stuff.)

I will say of what I tried over there really liked the Auchentoshan 12 year. Tomatin didn't overwhelm me.

10 Best Budget Bourbons

Evan William's Single Barrel
Got 2 bottles of this and was unimpressed. This from a guy who enjoys Evan black as a mixer. The aged single barrel is a bit of a disappointment.
Evan Black don't need no mixin'. It's delicious on its own.Agree, though, that EWSB is pretty mediocre compared to all the other wonderful $25-30 bourbons.

Just gifted a bottle of Noah's Hill Bourbon. Will enjoy some tonight
Anyone know a good spot to get an older age-statement (15yr / wax top) bottle of this?

Had a pour of it at a local pub last weekend and it's been on my mind ever since. Fantastic Bourbon.
you'd have to look on the secondary market - craigslist, bottlespot, facebook groups, dustybid, something like that

oh and it'll cost you around $275 probably

Not a bottle of the new non-age-stated stuff here locally for $45. I'll give it a shot and see how that goes.
Right, NAS is around $45. If you look at the little side label, look for something from 2015. It'll say 15-##. 15 is the year and ## is the batch. I loved batch 11 but can't find it anymore.

The stuff from 2015 is a bit older than some of the previous NAS Noah's due to some supply issues. Basically the story I was told is they have had to take stock that might have gone into Willett Family Estate and pull it into their other labels because of sourcing issues.
Soooo turns out they switched from wax to foil tops between 14- and 15-... A buddy who is a bourbon nerd swears by the "black wax tops" due to "some changes".

Anyways... Found two wax tops (batch 14-49) at a hole in the wall spot in Memphis.... Possibly last two in town. Grabbed em. Currently sipping poolside in Nashville.

So good.... So so good.

If anyone can find Noah's Mill batch 15-11, I'd love to get my hands on 6-8 bottles.

I'd be happy to trade some stuff from my stash or pay for cost + shipping

I'll look around. Whats up with 15-11?
should have said 15-11 or 15-18... 18 is another really good one.

not sure what stock they used for those two, but it's different than 15-34 and some of the others I've had from this year.

they are all good, but 15-11 and 15-18 were just incredible IMO

I just polished off a bottle of High West American Prairie Bourbon. It was surprisingly good for a spirit from Mormon country. Dare I say, it's the best export since Mad Cow?

High West sources the bourbon for American Prairie and American Prairie Reserve - likely a mix from MGP and possibly Four Roses
Interesting. So they don't make their own?
They make some of their own stuff but release that under High West Silver and Valley Tan labels. The stuff they are known for is sourced, but still good stuff.

Fingers crossed on Tomorrow night's powerball number being 1 or 35....

Bought in on two Bourbon "Powerball" Lotteries.... If the Powerball is one of those two numbers I will get:

• 1x Elijah craig 23 year
• 1x Stagg Jr Barrell Proof 132.2

• 2x Very Special Old Fitzgerald 12yr

• 1x Mystery/Surprise bottle

The kicker?

Bought 1 & 35 on a pappy 12yr auction too ($12ea).... Started late but "should fill"

5 mins before draw... "We are 6 short"

I PM host "I'll buy the 6 last spots for $60 (price of 5) so you can run tonight. No response.

Lotto comes.... 35.

Bottle of pappy 12yr whistles by my ear but does not connect... I JUST MISS on scoring it for $24 (Had more people jumped in) or $84 (had the guy checked his inbox)

But, 5 bottles on the way inbound for a total investment of $29, and my two pappy 12yr numbers are still live for Saturday's drawing.

Ironically, I've spent the night at a buddy's restaurant sipping amazing bourbons while helping him build his menu out. Finishing out the night with Evan single barrel on rocks. I have realIzed I may like this stuff much more than I initially thought.

Regardless... Killer night

FYI the Elijah Craig 23yr was bottled 3/30/90, barrel 126.

So how do the rest of us get in on this bourbon/lottery auction thingy?

I'm a big fan of Japanese Whiskey
Got a favorite? I'm like Mikey I'll try anything.
Haven't purchased a bottle yet, but I had a Nikka 12 that was pretty good. The other night I has a glass of a Yamazaki 12 that was also delicious.
My BIL just moved back to the US after four years in Japan and brought me a bottle of Nikka Coffey Grain Whiskey---fantastic. When I visited him there a couple years ago we drank a lot of Japanese whiskeys and they were all very smoky/peaty. This one is not. It's more like a bourbon---a little richer and sweeter, which I tend to prefer.

Couldn't find either of them. In fact when I went into my local crappy place they said: "I don't think the Japanese make Whiskey." I was like thanks, bye. Better place about 15 miles away said they usually carry Yamazaki and something else I didn't catch the name, but they are out now and it is really hard to get right now.

Had to go to Nashville bought the only thing they had - Nikka Taketsuru Pure Malt. From what I've read it's a blend of 10 yearish old malts. I like it. Reminds me of one of my favorite's Balvenie in the sherry casks.

I have decided to stumble into the world of Scotch.

I am very fortunate to have a mentor(co-worker who likes to travel to Kentucky twice a year to go on whiskey tours). He seems very knowledgeable to a neophyte like myself.

My introductory bottle is a 12 year Tomatin Single Malt. I had it on the rocks. It burns a little, but I like it.
Less than 2 months in, and I have decided to extract myself from this world. I am notoriously frugal(read: cheapskate), and have concluded a scotch hobby is too...extravagant.

The second you start talking about 'good' scotch, you are instantly talking $100.00 and above.

But part of the fun is finding the cheaper whiskeys that are still awesome. You don't have to spend big to enjoy.

I know nothing of scotch, but there's a lot of bourbons available for 1/2 that price that are very good.

Right, but I suspect a Scotch drinker's definition of "cheaper" is far, far different than a Bourbon drinker's.

For Bourbon, $13-15 will get you a really nice neat sipper (Evan Williams Black, White, or 1783, Ancient Ancient Age, Fighting ####, and any other HH BIB still flying under the radar). The uninformed usually call these mixers, but they just aren't very complex. A little boring, but perfectly good to sip neat. A lot of people go looking for "smooth" and really over look some the cheap stuff in the process that fits that bill.

You get up around $20-23 and you are getting into some truly awesome Bourbons (OGD, WT, Dickel 12) and once you get into the $25-30 range, you've got a massive list of delicious bourbons and rye's to choose from. All outstanding and a matter of personal taste.

If you are in a non-control state, often, those prices are even better.

I don't know much about the Scotch world.....are there any 90-100 proof sippers for $25-30? Best I can tell, it's a bunch of 80-proof blends.

Was on the Acela last week on the way back from DC and had a few hours to kill, so I figured I'd try Woodford for the first time. I don't know if it was because I hadn't had a drink in a couple of weeks or what, but OOF I couldn't feel my throat! Finished two fingers but it wasn't pleasant. Maybe I should stick to my basic Maker's and Jameson haha

Are u finging Eagles Rare locally? It's almost impossible to fine here in Jax the last few months

Wow... I find Jameson to be much harsher than Woodford, which I find to be one of the sweeter/mellower bourbons/whiskeys out there. Honestly if I was to pick a single bourbon to be my go-to for a "big rock and a little splash o' coke" bottle, that it would be it. I enjoy it on a rock too.

Eagle Rare 10yr is pretty plentiful here. I snap pictures of the shelves of a few places I frequent to keep abreast of selection/pricing:

Charlies Liquors (up the street from my office): $30.99

Doc's Liquors (by my house): $29.99

Both are fairly well stocked but not too "marked up". If you wanted me to package up a few bottles I'd be happy to help ya out, GB.

Did this have a point other than a bitter anti-liberal rant? Because...Tl;dr
There are a lot of brands that have started as NDPs, buying their whiskey and creating a label. Some of them have decided to start distilling their own make. There's no way all of these new producers will be able to age their own make whiskey (without seeing a single $ for 2+ years) while still buying whiskey to bottle as their brand. Some are taking the approach of distilling other spirits that don't need aging so they can get some revenue in the meantime.

The point in this article to start hoarding craft bourbon is a bit ridiculous. If a distiller makes really good bourbon, I'm sure they are more likely to survive. If it's average or worse and they close, it would see pretty easy to find an equivalent replacement.

Yeah - the writing is a bit ridiculous - it is a commentary on what was going on in the industry a few years ago and how that is affecting current supply, though. I thought it was interesting and pertinent to the thread. The writing is a bit overbearing - perhaps just watch the video about Pappy White.

Do you ever see the 1.75 L bottles?

Scored another bottle of Elmer T Lee after putting a serious dent in the bottle a buddy gave me for my bday.

Sold my Elijah Craig 23yr I won in a raffle for $225+shipping.

Swapped my 2nd bottle of Very Special Old Fitzgerald 12yr (a fine wheater) for a bottle of Japanese Hibiki 12yr. Intrigued to sample the style.

Long story... skip to bold if you bore easily :)

Lunch break, happened to be driving by a liquor store that my folks frequent for their wine. The head guy at the shop used to work at another store and took great care of them for years. When he changed shops, they followed him. Have developed a great relationship with the guy. He used to hook up our booze for BBQfest on the cheap. Hadn't met the guy face to face in over a decade though...

ANYWAYS, drop in and browse. he doesn't recognize me. They've got a solid selection including some stuff like Stagg Jr, Elmer T Lee, and Buffalo Trace experimental Collection stuff. Most of it is overpriced though... Angels envy for $49.99.. ETL for $49.99...etc.

Then I turn the corner and notice a Weller rack. Loads of Special Reserve 750 and 1.75s.... and...whats this? 10 bottles of Weller Antique 107?! $24.99?! Grabbed two... put one back and grabbed a bottle of their Private Store Pick Buffalo Trace Single Barrel (a little steep at $23.99) as well. I figure if I love the OWA107 I can come back tomorrow.

THEN, I head up to the counter.... "You guys have a bead on any Weller 12yr?" (chorus of laughs from the staff). "you get that a lot don't you?" More chuckles and "yep". Chat a bit with Shane... Then let him know who I am. He lights up. "Oh man I love your folks... they followed me here...etc etc" Told me stories of them letting him know when he undercharged then accidentally, etc.

We chat a bit longer. He then tells me he'll be sure to set me some W12 aside, I ask if I can take my number and give me a ring when something comes in. He said "we don't usually but I will for you!". I jot down the info and note that I'm looking for W12 on there. He takes it... jots something on there and adds that "he's going to set aside a little something special this November, too"
:excited:

Pretty much HAS to mean he's going to try to hold me a bottle from their Pappy allocation... right?

Very much looking forward to tasting the OWA107 tonight...

Good stuff! Elmer T Lee is near the top of my list but is a little hard to find these days. My favorites for price/availability are Eagle Rare 10 and Four Roses Small Batch.

He takes it... jots something on there and adds that "he's going to set aside a little something special this November, too" :excited:

Pretty much HAS to mean he's going to try to hold me a bottle from their Pappy allocation... right?

Very much looking forward to tasting the OWA107 tonight...
Maybe Pappy or maybe Buffalo Trace Antique Collection (kinda makes sense since you were after Weller 12). Heck, maybe both.

Scored another bottle of Elmer T Lee after putting a serious dent in the bottle a buddy gave me for my bday.
Good stuff! Elmer T Lee is near the top of my list but is a little hard to find these days. My favorites for price/availability are Eagle Rare 10 and Four Roses Small Batch.
Yep, Elmer T Lee is pretty readily available at one spot near my office for 39 A bit of a markup but not the 49 or more I see at other shops.

I haven't been able to get into four roses, but it was admittedly a single barrel tasting after three other tastes in an evening. Eagle rare is pretty steady around here for 29 to 35 Haven't had a chance to give it a real good tasting yet either.
