[icon]'s whiskey flipping thread (2 Viewers)

I usualy prefer bourbon straight

but at a restaurant I saw this and couldn't resist

Modern Old Fashioned

Knob Creek, Orange and Belgian White Ale.

it was pretty refreshing
I'm intrigued. Was mixing Old Fashioneds Sat night with Willett 2yr Rye, EHT Small Batch and Rye, and McKenna 10yr BIB. Fun tasting the flavor shifts.

Also sipped on the new Elijah Craig 18 (very good), 2015 BTAC TH Handy (meh), and 2015 BTAC Eagle Rare 17 (extremely good). Great night of drinking.

Not sure if serious.

An old fashioned generally doesn't include beer. It's sugar (cube/syrup), bitters (normal/orange/old-fashioned), whiskey (generally rye but can be bourbon), and ice. Optional / Non-traditional are Cherry (muddled, maraschino), orange slice (muddled fruit and/or garnished), and splash of water pre-muddling to dissolve the sugars if using cubes.

When I make them at home, mine are 2 sugar cubes (small cubes, big 10oz-ish glass), hit with 3-4 dashes each of Orange Angostura bitters, muddled, 1/4 Clementine & 1 cherry muddled (fruit not rind), fill glass with ice, top with whiskey till 3/4 full (usually 4-5oz). I know it's somewhat of a sin, but I enjoy capping the glass with a shaker and giving the drink a quick shake or two vs stirring. Certainly not by-the-book... but I enjoy it.

I'm not really a drink snob so I don't mind folks using bourbon in an "old-fashioned" or vodka in a "martini". The drink you mentioned isn't TRULY an old-fashioned, but it sounds fun and I have no issue with calling it what they have. It's just booze, afterall :)

Lots of Bookers tonight. Love it neat - a little rough but nice. I feel like a man drinking this stuff with no ice.

Well BTAC season went okay but not stellar.

• Landed an Eagle Rare 17 (fantastic bottle, rarest of the BTAC this year) for $89
• Landed a Thomas H Hardy Saz (decent bottle, most common of BTAC this year) for $99

Now wheeling and dealing to get that William LaRue Weller I was initially trying to hunt down...

Successfully swapped ER17 > GT Stagg '14 > William Larue Weller '15, so I got the bottle I really wanted this year.

Moved my Handy '15 for $130 and 3 bottles of Weller 12, which was a win for me.

Yesterday my local called me up and sold me two Weller 12 750s ($39) and one 1.75: ($55)... so I'm good on W12 for a bit now.

Randomly this AM got a call from a number I didn't have stored... it was Men, the drunken ******** from the liquor store. He was "breaking all his rules" but had gotten a single Van Winkle Special Reserve 12yr Lot B and offered it to me. I thanked him profusely ran home for lunch. I grabbed a 2oz sample of the 1792 Port Finish I got recently (quite tasty, like a mild Midwinternight's Dram), two glencairn glasses, and headed up to his shop.

Shook ands and got to talking... pulled out the bottle. Talked about how his list was long but he wanted me to have this... said I seemed like a nice guy and he knew I wouldn't flip it. Expecting that, I reached up, popped the top, poured an ounce or so into each glass and laughingly said "Can't well flip it now can I?" He laughed and seemed relieved and eager to try it.

So that's how I got a bottle of Van Winkle 12yr for retail ($59) and ended up drinking whisky with a drunken asian dude on the counter of a ghetto-ish liquor store at noon on a wednesday.

Good times.

I hate you

 big fan of it's cousin, Noah's Mill

FYI the Van Winkle Lot B is... underwhelming if you buy into the hype. Very smooth, nice carmel, but there's just not a ton of flavor there.... inoffensive but not a standout. I would have been a bit upset if I bought into the hype and had dropped $50-75 for a pour of this. Very curious to blind test it against Weller 12.

looks like these are going to be near impossible to get as well

http://www.mybottleshop.com.au/product/jack-daniels-sinatra-century-100-proof/

asking $430 to $500 a bottle retail
I can get it for you @ $160/bottle + tax/shipping if you're interested
Really, the 100 proof? hmmm, merry Christmas to me, how long does that offer stand? After the Holiday?
It lasts as long as the local store around here has it... it's been out a while, so I don't anticipate a run on it

FYI there are a LOT of local store-picked barrels of Eagle Rare around here right now.... One in particular from a place called "Cheers" in Collierville is exceptional. We've blind A/B tested it against picked barrels from 3 other stores including the LIquor Barn in KY (who usually pick well) and it beat them all out.

MAY have another lead on a Lot B 12yr.....

Getting samples of this years Old Rip Van WInkle 10yr and last year's OF Birthday Bourbon to give a shot. Also my buddy scored a 4 Roses Small batch Limited Edition that I'm very eager to give a try.

If anyone has a chance with the Pappy this year, the 15 is better than the 20. That was my opinion and confirmed by my SIL that works for Sazerac.

So, there's a whole lot in this thread. I'm not a drinker, but I want a buy a buddy of mine a decent bottle of scotch to celebrate a milestone for him. I need recommendations for something in the $50 range.

TIA

Could do worse than Glenlivet 12 or Glenmorangie 10.

A little above your price range and not quite scotch, but a bottle of Hibiki 12 (japanese suntory whisky) is close enough to be really enjoyed by Scotch fans, while being just different enough to stand out as a unique gift. I have a bottle and all my scotch fan buddies who have tried it have absolutely loved it.

Thanks! Think I may go the Hibiki route. I know at least one other person bought him a bottle of scotch and their price range is decently higher than mine, so going with something unique seems like something he would appreciate.

Looks like we have it here in MN...$449 a bottle.

$199 for the 90 proof.

It's a beautiful bottle, as well. Not that it affects the flavor, but it looks great in any bar and is a cool conversation piece when entertaining ("Oh you like scotch? Have you ever tried Japanese Whisky?").

Review from Scotch review site.

Do you know what kind of scotch your buddy likes? Pretty big variation between the regions...Islay is generally very peaty due to the barley being dried over peat fires versus Speyside (your glenfiddich and glenlivets) which is lighter and more grassy and sometimes sweeter versus Highlands (oban, glenmorangie, etc) which has its own array of flavors as well, etc.

My other buddy bought him a Glenlivet 30 and my friend said it was the 2nd best scotch he has ever had. So whatever that means.

Wow, yeah If others are getting him $500 bottles of scotch then I definitely think going with a tangent like the Japanese Whisky or fine Bourbon would likely be wise.

:lmao: "Thanks for the awesome gift. It's not as good as what I've had before, but thanks anyway."

:lmao: Yeah, that sounds kind of bad. Pretty sure he would never say something like that to the guy that got it. I got that from his wife and I'm pretty sure she meant it as a compliment.

I ended up grabbing the Hibiki 12. It was actually somewhat difficult to find. It turns out that Suntori has discontinued the Hibiki 12. Called around and finally found a shop with a few bottles. The clerk seemed pretty excited that I was buying it and said multiple times that it was a great drink.

Hopefully my buddy enjoys it. Thanks for the recommendation icon!

No problem... happy to help. I hope he likes it too!

Just scored the most expensive bottle of my life.... a John Fitzgerald 20yr 375ml (yes, only a pint) for $300 retail, one of a 3,000 bottle release featuring the infamous "Stitzel-Weller" juice. It will be here Thursday. The hype around this bottle is crazy... with secondary currently floating in the $650-750 range.

I happen to have a "bourbon tasting dinner" at a steakhouse that night (4 courses hosted by buddy who owns liquor store)... will prob bring it down and try to flip it there. Who knows.
If not may try to swap for something tasty plus $3-400.

No way I am drinking that bottle.
