Where at?
Republic. The food was so fn good too.http://www.republictaverndetroit.com
Holy #### that is a great menu.
While it's no Chicago, LA, NYC, the Detroit food scene has been growing exponentially the last few years. There are so many great new places popping up all the time. Republic might be the best I've been to yet.

Borbon tasting dinner tomorrow night. Limited to 40 seats... we have 6 couples going and none of the ladies enjoy bourbon, so will the fellas will be feeling no pain by dinner's end. Pretty excited to try the Master's Keep 17yr. The Russells Reserve single barrel is actually a pretty tasty pour as well, have bottle at the house. Not sure I could care less about the Turkey Honey. May just skip that.

3 diff friends at shops reached out to me in one day. 3 of the 5 John E Fitzgerald 20yrs went to buddies at cost (300+tax). I held two. Within an hour I had an offer for a 2011 Pappy 23yr (SW juice) valued at ~1750 when I had never listed them for trade/sale. Tonight I'm at a tasting dinner at a steakhouse and some guy overhears buddies and I talking about the whole deal and he offers $2500 for the Pappy bottle that I don't even have yet.

Tonight finalized trade for the first bottle and they will ship Monday. Straight up told him the scenario and he said he wouldn't open it either, that he "prefers to drink whiskey that doesn't come with the guilt of killing an endangered species"

So without even really trying, was proposed two offers that will turn my two 300+tax bottles into $2500. Absurd. This officially gets the GF off my back about the 50 bottle cabinet which is nice I guess  so strange

Feel dirty on some levels but I'll be tasting a pour out of a buddy's bottle as a thanks for setting him up. Anticipating being underwhelmed. More excited about the '14 PVW15 sample I have coming in.

How much did you flip your ticket for?

Does anyone actually drink whiskey anymore?
Nightly. I have 50+ bottles in my bar at the house.. just about every one is open unless it's a duplicate of one that's already open. :banned:

 at flipping title... I have never sold a single bottle of whiskey at secondary. In fact, I have gone out of my way to hook up friends with hard to find stuff at cost.

Just scored the most expensive bottle of my life.... a John Fitzgerald 20yr 375ml (yes, only a pint) for $300 retail, one of a 3,000 bottle release featuring the infamous "Stitzel-Weller" juice. It will be here Thursday. The hype around this bottle is crazy... with secondary currently floating in the $650-750 range.

I happen to have a "bourbon tasting dinner" at a steakhouse that night (4 courses hosted by buddy who owns liquor store)... will prob bring it down and try to flip it there. Who knows.

If not may try to swap for something tasty plus $3-400.

No way I am drinking that bottle.
Memphis is May celebration bottle :)

If i get another one (very possible, have multiple irons in the fire and just got pics of a case in the backroom of a store nearby (spy shots courtesy of another liquor rep buddy)) I'll swap it for a Pappy 15 and have THAT one at the booth for MIM Celebration bottle. Probably better juice and 750ml vs 375ml. :banned:

Been a while since I have really been into whiskey, but am finding myself more attracted to it lately. Bought a house with an orange tree that has 500+ oranges on it right now and make myself an old fashioned 2-3 times per week

Need help quick, have to buy a bottle of scotch in the next hour or two for a guy's 50th bday. Anything decent in the $50 range?

Eta, not a good friend, no idea what he likes

Ah, yes....thx
Don't over complicate it. I know there are lot of great bottles out there but I have never seen anyone get upset receiving a bottle of McClellan12 which retails for right around $60, might find it slightly less or more depends on the place. Maybe because it is readily available people look past it but I always enjoy it with a cube.

I got a bottle of McClellan25 from the Mrs when I turned 40, she knows nothing about single malt but she went with the brand she seen me drink many times before.

If you are near TJs in Cali i would go there first. Many times they feature famous liquor brands under the Trader Joe's label. I got a bottle of McClellan that was sold under TJ name, think it was 10yr but very good and was like $30 a bottle I want to say, no more than $40.

The article is a couple years old and some of it isn't that flattering. But the Macallan that I mention is listed within this article and it actually scores well at 7.25/10 and for $35 a bottle or half of what you will pay it fits the bill just fine most nights. They sell a blend for about $10 but I would not use it for anything other than mixers for "guests" at big holiday parties.

But find the Macallan you really can't go wrong IMO.

Got lucky again... Local shop splashed their local limiteds on a spur of the moment thing. Dropped in and got another William Larue Weller and TH Handy. Promptly flipped the handy for zero bucks to my buddy so he can complete his '15 BTAC set. #flipper #murraychristmas

Since regularguy shot me a PM asking about where to find Weller I'm gonna shoot him a couple "Weller related" pours (and a couple other goodies). Cheers GB, PM Incoming

Scored a bottle of EJC XII last night. Hoping to flip it for 7 Brown eggs, 2 tacos and a Slurpee.
Just had two... Pretty good pour. Worth at least a full dozen scramble and a salted caramel double scoop at Ben & Jerrys. Don't sell the EJC XII short, you're liable to leave dollars on the negotiating table,

Sunday NFL Watching menu

Had some buddies over Sunday to watch the games. Highlights of the day were:
• 4 Roses Small Batch LE: Killer pour. Nice hit of spice compared to my usual Wheaters. Went back for seconds. Fave of day.
• Parkers Heritage 13yr Wheat : So good! Lingering finish on this was what stood out to me.
• Barrell Whiskey (batch 1) : Very good. Not sure I'll pursue the later, more expensive batches, though.
• IW Harper 15: Not bad but actually not a huge difference between it and the standard NAS version at 40% of the cost.
• WFE 6yr Rye : Leaps and bounds ahead of the 2 year. An awesome Rye to drink neat at ~$60.
• High West Double Rye: Ehhhh. Unique. Odd minty flavor that stomps on everything else. Try before you buy.

• William Larue Weller : Still one of my favorites. Surprisingly drinkable at 135pf, but a few ice chips take it to the next level.
• VWR 12yr Lot B: Still tough to pick out against Weller 12. A touch smoother but comes at the expense of depth of flavor, IMO. Would NOT buy this above retail-ish.
• Sazerac Rye aka Baby Saz : Still one of my favorite $30-35 bottles. Surprisingly available here. Makes a stellar Old Fashioned.

• MidWinter Night's Dram (act 3.2): Tasty but more of a cold weather cigar-toting pour. Port influence is huge.
• 1792 Port Finish: Kinder gentler version of MWND, with more port than AE, but not so much as to overpower the base Whiskey. A should-have for every cabinet at $40.

Also... revisited my Hibiki 12 yesterday. It's about half full now, and has been open a couple months or so. The oxidization has been VERY kind to this bottle. Such a great pour. I'm going to miss this one when it's gone.

I think I saw some 4 Roses SBLE at a store close to work a couple of weeks ago. Going to go check back in during lunch.
Definitely a buy at retail! I've yet to find one locally
Actually, they had a bottle left (out of 24) when I asked about it - $250. They also had Van Winkle 10 yr for $240. Needless to say, they still have them in their possession, not mine.edit: called another store who has had the SBLE and sold it at $100. I'm on a list now FWIW.

To hell with paying secondary at a store. Good luck with the list! They help. It helps to identify who handles their whiskey and try to make your purchases through them. I've also found that bringing samples of stuff they've hooked you up with helps as well... it's good to share.

Speaking of... Your samples are going out today. Shooting over double-pours of Weller 12, Old Weller Antique 107 (for comparison), and a single pour of '15 BTAC William LaRue Weller (134.6 proof) so you can try the unfiltered/uncut stuff too. Also shooting over a good pour of the 1792 Port Finish for something a little different (if you're a cigarguy, they make a great pair). I'll PM you the tracking number today. Let me know what you think.

:excited: Much appreciated, GB. I've been enjoying the whiskey advent calendar, but it's been mostly scotch so it'll be great to have some new bourbons to taste now too.

Merry Christmas!

Big thank you to those that have suggested Buffalo Trace as an inexpensive bourbon option. Picked some up for a Christmas party and it was a hit - 3 of us finished the bottle in a couple hours and were debating getting someone to head out and get us another bottle. Will definitely be buying it again, a steal in the 20-25 dollar range.

If you get a chance to try private barrel store picks, they can be even better. Once you figured out which ones have tasters who are good at it, frequent those stores for hand picked bottles as they're frequently tastier than the mass mixed stuff (which is still good).

Be sure to check out Larceny (similar price) for another killer value, IMO.

Picked up Larceny last night - had to stop in at Total Wine for a Christmas gift and saw they had it, so based on your suggestion I grabbed a bottle. Another guy that was there picking up some bottles said he thought it was pretty good too.

They had their version of an Angel's Envy private selection - a mix of 3 barrels - didn't pick it up, but may as it was only $1 more than the regular stuff.

I'm not a big angels envy guy but many are! Word is the store blends have the potential to be pretty tasty but I can't speak to em (especially that store).

Flying down to south florida tomorrow for a couple days. Going to browse a few stores in the Palm City / West Palm Beach area while there. Also heading over to Bradenton for a day to check out my folks house that's under construction. May stop by a place or two to see if there are any goodies laying around.

Then off to San Diego in Feb...

I've had 4 Roses the last few days and thought it was sweet and delicious. Today, I had a Blantons first. That 4 Roses was very average after.
