Finally located a store in town with the Dickel Rye.
It's obviously pretty similar to the Bulleit Rye, but more different than I thought it'd be. I think I like it a little more. It's got the same spicy, dry, minty thing going on, but it's got a touch of sweetness that's not in the Bulleit.

I love Jack Daniels. Green label, Black label, Gentlemen Jack, Single Barrel.....its all good.
I was lucky enough that my father is a Tennessee Squire (basically a club where you become an honorary member of Monroe County where JD is distilled and you actually get a deed to a plot of land on the distillery.)
On my 21st B-Day, my father wrote a letter to the Tennessee Squire Association explaining why they should allow me to become a member (which is the only way to become a member, by current member recommendation). Of course, growing up with my father I'd have the occasional drink at home and developed quite a liking to JD.
A couple of months after my 21st birthday, I received a letter package in the mail and was ecstatic. The plot of land I think is 1'x1' or maybe even smaller but its a great conversation piece and whenever you are at the distillery you are treated like a king with private tours and tastings and such.

Do any of you guys know if Heaven Hill has a 2nd bourbon mashbill? I'd like to try some Fighting ####, but I suspect I'll end up a little disappointed.
I love the value of Evan Williams White Label and want to like Heaven Hill products more than I actually do (whole line of well-made value bourbons at an honest proof) , but they always seem to leave me a bit underwhelmed. The entire EW line and to some degree, even EC12. All nice bourbons, but always seem a little lacking compared to my typical staples (Turkey and OGD). EWW, in particular, has a heavy chocolate/dark cherry type of sweetness without the right if amount of spicy kick to balance it out.
I'm going to give FC a shot even if it seems like a near certainty that it's the exact same mashbill. Maybe a little extra age and different barrel selection could make a difference. 3 extra proof points certainly can't hurt.
Either way, it'll be interesting to see how it differs from the EWW.

The line for Pappy and BTAC at a Party Source in N. KY. 7:30AM. Apparently, if didn't get in line by 4:45, you had no shot (not sure what everyone else is still doing there in that case).

I was in line there... But got there at 5:30
I was ~100th in line and got shut out.The email notification went out at 11a on Friday and the first people got in line at 3pm.
I had other obligations and couldn't make it down til early Sat am.
People like me stayed in line because they didn't say how many bottles they had. In their spring release they had ~85 bottles and I was originally 86th in line when I got there before a couple people joined friends earlier in the line.
Still got some EC21, so wasn't completely shut out
ETA - I was about 20 feet to the right of the light post on the right side of the picture and still didn't get any Pappy. The guy that posted that didn't stand a chance

Then again, the publicity for Party Source is much better that way.
Though, I'd think it would be effective marketing to do a lottery through some sort of customer loyalty program. Give lottery tickets from $30+ purchases for like 6 months leading up to the Pappy release. Make it a big event when the lottery's drawn.
Gets a bunch of people involved, but people don't have to wait all morning to find out if they get a bottle.
Anything's better than a control state though, I guess.

Just bought a bottle of Angel's Envy tonight - haven't had it yet, but I know they use port barrels in the finishing process and I like port, so I've got that going for me.
Also snagged a bottle of Basil Hayden for $28 and Knob Creek small batch 9yr for $22

A couple trips out of state to pick up some Old Weller Antique 107 and some Very Old Barton 100 (neither available in VA).
Not a huge fan of wheaters, but the OWA107 is pretty nice. I prefer it over the bottle of Makers 46 that's taking me forever to finish.
VOB100 is one I'd been wanting to try for a long time. Not quite as good as my trusty Evan Williams White Label, but I'd love to have it available locally.
Finally got around to trying some Devil's Cut. It's actually pretty good. Not sure I'd buy it again (there's just so much great bourbon at that price point), but I think it's worth the price.

Also, I'm very curious to see what impact this trend towards flavored whiskey ends up having on the bourbon market.
That crap's selling like hotcakes (and KC has some that apparently would even go well on your hotcakes).

My hope is that the insane profits from essentially selling flavored corn vodka at bourbon prices helps distillers keep offering good bourbon at great prices.
Though, I get worried about what happens when the bean counters see those profits. Seems some would want to divert more resources towards the flavored stuff and increase the prices on bourbon.

High West Campfire - I thought it was a bit gimmicky, but finally picked up a bottle after seeing so many good reviews and I love it. A blend of American bourbon, some rye and a very noticeable but subdued amount of peated scotch. A great idea really. Very enjoyable flavor.

Actually it's cinnamon flavored whiskey. Same strength as most standard whiskeys (vs the half-strength or so of most liqueurs.
Dismiss it for its' flavor, fine. But it's got some pop. I personally enjoy it. very good when mixed with sprite (if not shooting).

I don't think many whiskeys are 66 proof. I know bourbon has to be 80 for regulatory compliance and thought the same applied to "straight whiskey" but am not sure on that. I've never had the Fireball though and hadn't seen it before now. It does strike me as more of a whiskey flavored liqueur.

To be defined as a true whiskey, it needs to be 80-100 proof. Fireball is only 66.

Oh.. I've found a new favorite "mixin" whiskey. Rather than dropping the ~$50 on a handle of Jack Black label I've recently changed my go-to to Evan Williams at ~$20 per handle. At less than half the price, even with a good strong Whiskey/Coke mix (50/50ish) I find the Evan comparably enjoyable.
When drinking on rocks (or with a splash of soda/water), my go-to is more of a Jack Single Barrel or Woodford Reserve guy. Not very refined I know but that's what I've been going for. Most of my Whiskey drinking is done mixed down a bit with coke though.

Whatever Fireball actually is, it's the new Jagermeister. I always used to be a whiskey shot guy (Jack, Beam, whatever) when it came time to do a round of shots, but most people would go for the Jager as a default. Nowadays, it's Fireball.

Yeah, once companies add flavor (thus loosing the possibility of being called straight bourbon or straight whiskey), it really becomes a free-for-all cash cow.
Not totally sure what category most of these fall into, but they all pretty much allow for minimal or no actual whiskey. Predominantly neutral grain spirits and flavoring/coloring.
I'm assuming the one's actually labeled as whiskey would fall into the blended or spirit whiskey category, which only need contain 20% or 5% straight whiskey respectively.

I think that's the key to its popularity. Girls can handle it but it doesn't come off as a "girly" shot that guys are ashamed to be seen drinking.

Who cares what proof your cinnamon flavored whiskey is? Particularly if you're going to throw it in Sprite?
I was probably being a judgmental ####### last night, so I don't want to crap on what people enjoy. Hell, I'll have a bourbon and ginger now and again. But I don't particularly care what bourbon I use for it (other than the bourbon being cheap).
