Idiot drivers (1 Viewer)

It is real and magical.

only onto one ways obviously
but it's not, you know, legal, right?
but it is, you know, legal!!!

When there is a STEADY RED LIGHT, you must stop before crossing the marked stop line or

crosswalk. If you do not see any lines, stop before entering the intersection. Wait for a green light

before you start.

You may turn right while the light is red, unless a NO TURN ON RED sign is posted at the intersection.

You must first stop, check for and yield to pedestrians and other traffic.

You may also turn left after you stop at a red light, if you are in the left lane and are turning left from a

one-way street onto another one-way street, unless a sign tells you not to turn. You must first stop and

yield to pedestrians and other traffic.

Steady Red
A steady red light means “stop.” Do not go until the light turns green. You can
make a right turn on a red light only after you come to a complete stop and yield
to pedestrians or other vehicles in your path. You may not turn on red if a NO
TURN ON RED sign is posted.

You can turn left on a red light when driving on a one-way street and turning left onto
another one-way street. Stop and yield to pedestrians and other vehicles before turning.

Same law here in NY state. Of course, there are only a few places in my town where you might be turning left from a one-way onto a one-way, and I think all have no turn on red signs.

Pretty sure in Michigan you can turn left onto a one-way even from a two-way. My FIL did it once here with me in the car and said that it was legal there so he thought it was a standard thing.

Whoa, I had no idea.

I can't stand the drivers who use me as a blocker so they can speed. I do speed pretty much all the time and I hate those guys that you pass on the freeway and then they speed up and mirror my speed from a couple car lengths back...
Why? It make you stand out less to a cop as well. I do this heading through Wisconsin all the time. Get a caravan sometimes and fly.
My thoughts as well. The more the merrier as far as I'm concerned, as long as everyone's giving each other space and driving respectfully. It is nice if others take turns in front, though, if you're together for a long time.
I was driving down I-95 through SC a few years ago, on a weekday at about 2AM. Six cars, myself included, fell into this perfect pack. We got in line, gave each other olenty of space, and did about 90-95 mph. About every few minutes, the front car would pull to the righy and drop to the back of the line (like the Tour de France) We kept that up for about an hour and a half, until a few exited. It was a cool driving experience, how everyone was courteous and cool with each other.

I'm easily amused, I guess.
I love when this happens.

Spent hours driving on Hwy 10 through Texas with a pretty big group... upwards of 20 or so cars... all doing about the same as yours- 90-100mph and all taking turns somewhat organically at the front. We finally had to pull over to gas up. sucked.

Used to do this all the time in CA on I5 driving down to LA, but not as fast. And there'd always be somebody who'd pull up and pass us, pulling a few of the cars with them.... and they'd always get pulled over en masse down the road.

it was the same in CA, IIRC. I used to always make lefts from one-way streets onto one-way streets in SF... and saw many other people do the same.

Turning right at a 4-way stop. Guy to my left goes as I pull up and stop. I wait for him to go through and I start to turn right when the car behind the original car goes complete road rage on me. Goes through stop sign and hammers on breaks before t-boning me. Screaming, yelling, honking, swearing. He either didn't see the stop sign or didn't think he should wait his turn. Complete #######.

Whoa, I had no idea.
So, you're an idiot driver?

;)

We should probably have a confessional section of the thread (or new thread) where we admit to being idiot drivers ourselves sometimes. Complete with very rational excuses for our mistakes, of course.

Speaking of school zone speeding, I got a ticket some years back for speeding next to a local school. Problem was I regularly drove down the road, but only in evenings (past the 6:00 end time for the reduced speed limit) and on weekends when the limit is 30. So I admittedly got used to ignoring the school zone signs, and the one day I had to go that way in the middle of the day, there was a cop waiting to catch me going 33 in a 15. The fines are no joke in school zones, too.

did he hit you? unclear to me from your post.

but yeah- #######. why should he have to wait for you? he's entitled to do whatever the hell he wants in this world.... you obviously didn't get the memo.

Left on red in Philly is :moneybag: and people can't grasp it
They're still trying to understand turning right on red. I love the people who see the "stop here on red" sign, and somehow translate that to "no turn on red."

Yep... legal in MI to turn left onto a one-way on red. I do it every day, multiple times.

Hey #######, there is a reason they paint white lines on the streets telling you where to stop at a red light. So when you stop 2 car lengths after the thick white stripe, don't get pissed at me when you have to reverse because I can't turn the corner in my truck. Notice that when you back up behind the line I now have plenty of clearance to make my turn. Jerkoff!!!!
I've noticed that this is especially bad in PA. Not saying it doesn't happen elsewhere, but it seems like no one stops at the white line in PA. Hell, they even have signs at those white lines with an arrow pointing at the white line and saying, "Stop here". Yet people always seem to pull up to the intersection.
Are you talking about in the city or in the burbs? I get it if you will block the intersection as the light changes because of traffic. But if you're in the suburbs you're pretty much a #### if you sit at the white line and don't allow turn lane drivers to get through. When did drivers stop following this etiquette? It annoys me to no end.
First off, not sure what you're talking about. But secondly, it doesn't matter where you are. They put those lines there because they if buses or trucks make turns, they need that space to get by. If you're mad because you are behind and you can't get through, here's something you should realize: The world does not revolve around you. People shouldn't block an intersection because you are in a hurry to get by.

The other one is the "WAIT FOR GREEN" sign. This does NOT mean NO TURN ON RED. It means that oncoming traffic will get a green before you, so if you see them start coming towards you and your light is still red, don't go.

Do we really need a wait for Green sign in this instance? What is wrong with people?

I think every state has it's own version of weird signs like this. I know in Texas they have a sign that says something like "Texas law requires drivers to observe all posted signs." Yeah. But how do we know we have to obey that sign?

Pretty sure percentage of idiot bicyclists is way higher than percentage of idiot drivers. Had one today, surprisingly enough she was correctly in the street and not on the sidewalk. Unfortunately, cycling against oncoming traffic...

Probably. Unfortunately the higher number of drivers puts them way in the lead when it comes to raw numbers of knuckleheads. Not to mention the much higher potential for damage they have driving the big metal monsters instead of the death trap bike frame.

So you have a green light. You're waiting for traffic coming the other way to clear before turning left, but you sit behind the white line - why? Don't all cars clear the intersection when the light goes yellow/red?

I'm perplexed by your behavior.

That one time was the only time that I've ever experienced it. It was one of the most relaxing driving experiences I've ever had. It was as if everyone just "understood" one another and respected each other. That's rare on the road nowadays.

I think you're confused on the situation. Notice the OP said sitting at a RED light. We're not talking about sitting at a green light.

That Texas run was the best- sounds very similar to your SC trip. The CA drives were never too long- always cops and not as organic shifting of lead driver.

And t helps when you're in the middle of nowhere.

I remember going between 100-110 through most of Wisconsin (not fast enough). We had a group, but I don't recall having that rotating peloton.

Dear gardening truck,

On a one lane hwy and you are going 10mph under the speed limit with 20 cars behind you...pull the f over when you see the "slow car turnouts". #######.

Traffic circles are new to this area, but I thought I understood them until I read this from our state website.

Do not change lanes or pass any vehicles while in a traffic circle or roundabout.

How would you ever get into, or out of, the inner lanes? Look kids, Big Ben, Parliment!!!

Yeah, that's kind of confusing. I'm pretty sure the distinction is between changing lanes and crossing a lane. Crossing a lane while entering and exiting is fine (and often necessary).

I think every state uses the "No signal pre-emption for train" signs. I know what that means, but it's not exactly the clearest sign on the planet.

There's an epidemic here in Tampa this year...people driving the wrong way on interstates after midnight...this year there's been 5 or 6 wrong way drivers who have killed 11 people...just 2 were arrested this weekend. Its completely out of control and non one can figure out how to stop it.

Close the bars earlier? It's been happening here, too. Like last night. Usually, the wrong way driver is drunk.

Been an epedemic in San Antonio. They've started putting up big flashing red signs saying WRONG WAY if you are going the wrong way on a ramp and everything in an attempt to curb it. No idea if it is effective at all.

Theyve put those flashing signs up here too, and The idea of putting the tire spikes on off ramps has been brought up, so anyone trying to get on the wrong way will get flat tires, but a few of the idiots here actually made u-turns on the highway to go the wrong way. This one was the first/worst one that killed 5 people (the wrong way driver and 4 local college fraternity brothers he hit head on)

:lmao: yeah

Guy today was a double doosh. Coming out of a light he speeds up enough to not get around him before the single lane begins but slows down to 30-35 mph in a 45. Then on top of that, continues to drive 35 mph through a 15 mph school zone. Completely oblivious to the world.

Saw this winner today while stopped at a red light. In case you are wondering, this is not a one way street. Guy couldn't be bothered to be third in line, he had to be first in his own special line. You can't see it, but the guy directly in front of me has expired temporary plates.

I see this stuff every day on my way to work.

Tonight, its drizzling and I turn onto a main street. This street is under construction so two lanes become one. There is a light ahead so we can only move when the light is green. A truck is behind me and at some point he turns his brights on. I move my body into the middle of the car so I'm not getting shined by the lights from my left mirror. I get up to the green light finally and I'm going straight and this guy is turning right. For some reason he starts flashing high lights at me before he turns.

I have no idea why this guy did what he did. I don't have a burnt out light in my back and its not like I cut him off as we had only one lane. I just chalk it up to the guy being a doosh but what satisfaction is had from his behavior? Baffles my mind.

Raining today. There's a long line at a light where double lanes merge into one after the light a little ways ahead. Now normal conditions, I'll usually move up the one open lane and merge in because traffic is moving. Today it was stopped and again pouring. So I just stay in the line and flow with everyone. This one lady starts coming up the empty lane like she's going to just zoom by us all. Now in normal conditions where we're moving she would have never gotten that far. Since were standing still she's passing lots of cars. I'm at about the merge point so I pull over a bit to kindly let her know you've gone far enough. She proceeds to beep her horn and I ignore it. You got that much lady, enjoy it.

So then we get about 3 miles down the road where it opens up to two lanes again and I'm stopped at a light behind 5 or 6 cars. She pulls into the empty lane and stops right next to me with no cars in front of her. She then proceeds to wave her finger at me with an evil glare. ##### not only didn't realize what she did was in the wrong from an etiquette stand point, she has to go the full doosh route and stare me down when I'm in a line behind other cars? She's lucky I'm not a lunatic because I felt the urge to chase her down but refrained because I'm not a maniac.

you are wrong. zipper
I agree under normal conditions (as stated) but it was pouring rain and we were all standing still. This isn't a normal zipper area. It's right after a light going uphill and curving around a bend. At most you may pass 2 cars while traffic is moving. All of which is moot since I was at the merge point and she still wanted to be greedy.

Going up a hill on a highway this morning, on the right of two lanes. Got stuck behind someone going relatively slowly while there was a line of cars in the left lane passing us. I looked back and saw a decent window a ways back, where there was a 6 or 7 car length distance between two cars. I waited patiently, checking to be sure it was still there as it got closer. When it got to me, the gap was still the same size, so the the car behind was clearly not going any faster than the car in front all that time. I made the lane change and quickly sped up to the rate they were all going so that no one had to slow down at all while I got in. But a few seconds later, there's the guy behind me riding my butt, which he proceeded to do for the next mile while we passed more cars on the right and before I could get back in the right lane and make an exit.

I don't get people. He was content to have space in front of him before, and my actions wouldn't have affected his speed at all if he hadn't sped up momentarily just to tailgate me.

It was like I kicked his puppy or something when I made that lane change.

You should have yelled to her that you work with her husband. We live close enough together that it could have been the same lady.

you are wrong. zipper
I agree under normal conditions (as stated) but it was pouring rain and we were all standing still. This isn't a normal zipper area. It's right after a light going uphill and curving around a bend. At most you may pass 2 cars while traffic is moving. All of which is moot since I was at the merge point and she still wanted to be greedy.

it's always a zipper area.

But if you're already at the zipper and she's trying to hungry-hippo your spot- screw her... but I read your OP as you just moving into the second to block her- which would be a screw you situation right thar.

Her lane ended (lines stopped) but there was that little space left that she could have hung half on the median with a everyone on the right not being able to do anything about. I merely let her know she had enough.

by pulling out to block?

not saying what I do- riding the bumper of the car in front of me- is any better in this situation.

eta: screw her, btw.

Hater No. 1: California. Drivers from the Golden State have dark thoughts about drivers from Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Nevada, New York, Oregon, Texas, Utah and even Vermont.
California has the best drivers I've seen but we hate tourist drivers. Rarely have a problem with California drivers (still the occasional cell phone guy).
You ####ers never seem to differentiate the left hand lane from the other lanes.

ETA: I do like the general pace that California drivers drive though.
