Indefinite Las Vegas Raiders thread - ☠ Mork and Brady searching for a wet paper bag to see if Pete Carroll can still coach his way out of one ☠ (1 Viewer)

The average for the AFC West coaches is now 65.

73-year-old Pete Carroll will make history this season as the oldest head coach in NFL history.

The title belongs to Romeo Crennel, who was 73 years and 199 days old for his last game on Jan. 3, 2021 with the Texans.

Carroll will turn 74 on September 15.
We just need 3 years of Carroll to, theoretically, get the franchise back on a winning track. Culture, talent…everything needs to be improved.

Damn, we need a QB.
This. I don’t hate the hire. He’s probably the best they could do without a QB. Pete should bring a winning mentality to the team.

So now we have our bridge HC. Do we tank for Arch? Are fans even up for that? Brutal division and we're sunk without a QB. ******** on Russell Wilson (although he'd probably be good for the tanking optics - terrible enough to win, enough street cred it doesn't look like we're tanking) being any kind of answer. I think Carroll knows this won't be a quick turnaround, so why not? Hire Bobby Slowik at OC and see if he can learn from his mistakes because he was a hot hot hot commodity at this time last year - just as Liam Coen is now. Bring back Patrick Graham and see if we can keep defensive contributors happy while the offense catches up.

I know the first thing detractors will say is that if we do that we need to trade Maxx, but that's just not true. He's only 27 right now, he'll play this year freshly 28, so he's got plenty of premium years left.
I don’t think Arch is coming out in 2026 because of starts in college.

It’s just lunacy to hire a 70+ year old to run a large organization. Especially one who did it before and wasn’t invited back immediately. Does he at least bring a group of loyal followers to help him run things his way?
Oh the reply I would love to post but I love my Raiders enough to not get this locked. At least Carroll's contract ends before he turns 78

I think it's a foregone conclusion he's coming out. If he were worried about getting snaps he'd have forced his way into the lineup this year or transferred. But just in case there are plenty of fallbacks, I love Nico Iamalavalea from TEN and Drew Allar should be in pretty good shape with another year of coaching up.

My main point was to gauge fans' thoughts - are we a quick decent QB away from relevance in this division? Or do we tear it down to the studs, let Carroll build it up, then see how long he can hold on or hand off some kind of future to the next guy?

I see what you did there ;)

Tear it down to the studs. LV doesn’t have a QB, WR1, or RB, and has plenty of other holes. It’s nice to think your team is just a player or two away from competing but this team doesn’t have much talent as a result of horrific drafts for 20 years.

The other issue is that the AFC W is only going to get better now. Denver is winning the AFCW in 2025 while KC and the Chargers battle it out for second place. LV isn’t competing in the division for at least 2 years and it’s probably more like 3. This is assuming a QB is found in the 2026 draft or a QB is drafted this year that develops into a top 10 QB after a year or two.

It’s a shame the Raiders wasted another great DE but Crosby should be traded. That’s depressing but he deserves a shot at a championship and he will be in his 30s before the Raiders could be good again.

Teteroa MacMillan is a Mike Evans clone and could easily be the BSA available at #6 that would instantly help the team, regardless of QB.

DO NOT trade Maxx. He makes everyone else on the D better. He is worth more than two Khalil Macks when they traded the latter.

I like the idea of taking one of the 2nd tier QBs with our 2nd rounder pick.
A La our last decent QB rookie pick in Carr.

Less pressure on him. Groom him. Hope for a miracle.
Jaxson Dart

I see a lot of Bo Nix in this kid's highlights. The progression of their college stats is comparable as well, when you consider Dart coming out after year 4, while Nix played 5.

So glad Schottenheimer got the Cowboys gig. Takes him out of the running for Raiders OC.

Now we can only hope Carroll is so old that he doesn't really know how to use his cell phone and can't reach Bevell and Waldron.

I’m not sure what to think about the hire but I can’t shake that Carroll still punts inside the opponent’s fifty as if it weren’t an agonizing decision whatsoever and I can’t help but wonder if the game hasn’t passed him by.

But Jim Harbaugh was considered ultra-conservative and the Chargers did pretty well. So there’s hope! Pete can still coach. It just is weird also because the Raiders’ roster is hurting from the Gruden/Mayock years and they’ve got a long way to go, which mixed with his age gives me pause.

I guess the hiring is a bit perplexing, but there’s no arguing with Pete’s results this century.

As a dynasty owner of Tre Tucker I'm hoping for a successful year. I kinda hope they don't try and get Wilson but he still might be better than AOC/Ridder

Davis seems to understand that the team is at least 2 years away from competing and Carroll is a short-term play while the Raiders rebuild.

I like Byron Leftwhich at OC and keep Graham at DC but I fear we will end up with Bevell at OC and Bradley at DC.
I'd be ok with Bevell, but not Bradley. We don't need another guy that was already here in the same role. Bradley runs a very bland scheme that worked in Seattle because he had great players and didn't need to do anything creative.

I really like Leftwhich at OC as he could be the heir apparent to take over for the old man. He has some sniffs for HC. As a player he played under like 30 different OC's (ok, that is an exaggeration but I do remember that he had a new OC almost every year in his playing career) and he seemed flexible in the "system" when Brady came in board. I like that, I am not a fan of coaches who have their "thing" and will do it whether or not the personnel fits it. Carroll should be a great mentor to him and he already was groomed for HC under Arians.

After Leftwhich I am intrigued with Ronald Curry... no idea how good or not he is as a possible OC as it would be his first go but he has been getting talk of being an OC soon and I will be very honest, I like that he would be coming home.

Bradley is that coach I described above. He has his system and will do it no matter what. I don't think our secondary is suited for it. If not Graham my second choice is Martingdale.

Slowick should also be in consideration at OC.

Amazing what difference a year makes but he was a hot candidate last year for a reason and, despite perception, the Texans scored 372 points this season, only five fewer than last year (the yardage discrepancy was bigger, 385 less this year). The league average scoring increased which caused their overall rankings to drop.

But the Texans went 10-7 and won a playoff game two years in a row. He needs to get hired ASAP.

Make it happen Pete!!!

Like the idea of Slowick or another young upcomer OC over the myriad of lahoozer OCs Pete had in Seattle. Also not enthused by how schwag the Seattle OLs were over the years. Hoping Pete has learned from those mistakes. Harbogg rebuilt the dolts OL with the quickness and will only continue that pathway, rightfully so. Pete better take note and match accordingly.

Don't overly credit Harbaugh on the OL. He picked Alt. Telesco picked Slater & Zion Johnson in the first round in '21 & '22... & Herbert in '20. The Chargers already had a nice foundation on the line before Harbaugh.

Another OT would be great at #6, assuming we're not talking about another Leatherwood-esque reach. But at that draft slot it feels more like a BPA situation. If it's an OL, great. If it's a WR, great. If it's Shedeur... okay, I get it so, great.

I'm skimming an article just now about free agent targets and 25-yr-old Chiefs G Trey Smith stands out to me. I check to see which round they took him in during the 2021 draft and find they took him at the end of rd 6, after which he immediately became their starting G.

In that very same draft they used their late 1st rd pick to trade for LT Orlando Brown and their late 2nd to take stud C Creed Humphrey.

This is the draft where the Raiders took Alex Leatherwood.

I point out the above not to commiserate, but to instill hope that rosters can improve quick when a team knows what it is doing.

Not sure where the Leftwich speculation comes from, he's been out of the league for two years now. He was fired in Jan 2023 and maybe I get not settling for a QB coach gig right away, sitting out two season seems like a concern. I think I'd be ok with him if King Tom knights him but I'd also be perfectly happy with Slowik in there.

First Press Conference for the Raiders new HC and GM.
Have to say, my immediate impression is that Carroll does not seem/act/look his age. Hope I'm that way in 30 years

when a team knows what it is doing.

What means this?

It means winning five of the last six AFC championships wasn't due to Pat Mahomes alone.
Wow. Sounds like they have a commitment to excellence, or something….
There is a big difference between the few elite teams and the bottom feeders in the NFL. It takes talent on the field, sidelines, and office to put together these powerhouse teams such as the Ravens, Chiefs, Eagles, and Bills. The Raiders do not have any of the 3 parts in place. But hey, at least we get new coaches and GMs every year or two to keep things interesting.

Agreed 100% on the first sentence. But as much as I dislike Mork's haircut, front-office and HC decisions thus far, at least the guy keeps swinging. This isn't dissimilar to the QB search. You keep taking swings until one sticks. And even when one does, you contiually groom succession plans.

As for the 2nd sentence, maybe we should give the new 'sideline' and 'office' more than a few hours before declaring them non-functional parts. That sentence was true last week and way moreso a few months ago before Brady walked in the door. But we're back to we'll see mode. For now.

Dammit. Now I’m filled with optimism again.

The new GM and HC could be good. Way too early to know. Carroll is old and is just temporary no matter how it goes.

So thinking about Carroll more there are a few things that I like about it...

First, with his proven track record of success, Carroll will be given a long leash which should amount to stability which is something we desperately need. After Gruden we haven't had anyone that had the respect to survive a bad year. Carroll should be given some leeway to make progress.

Second, Carroll is big on culture and will drive a very similar direction in which AP had the team going in terms of culture of positivity, identity and winning mindset. Of course it will be his own style and not exact but it will not be a culture shock like if he had someone like McD come in. The best thing about AP was that no matter what the team did not quit on him and fought. Carroll will keep that going.

Third, with his extensive experience he has a lot of connection and with the respect he has in football circles he should be able to pull pretty much whomever he wants to coach for him who is available. I really like the report that Graham is in consideration. I do hope Graham stays. Having continuity in that defense with the returning players healthy and maybe some more moves will go a long way to helping us win right away as he has stated. I do find it interesting that Rob Leonard got an interview for DC. That tells me that they would like Graham back and Leonard may be plan B to do exactly what I am saying here in trying to keep the defense going in the direction it has been. Bevell seems to be the front runner for OC which neither gets me excited or upset.

Finally, it seems like Carroll does not have final roster say which I think is a good thing.

Here is hope to a new era in Raider Nation.

Love the former, hate the latter. Leonard/Graham are proven (+) defensive coaches, while Bevel is proven (-). Pete needs to find his own Ben Johnson - an innovative guy who is in tune with modern NFL schemes. Bevel is not that.

Stiller fans trying to talk Russ Wilson to Vegas into existence elsewhere in the SP and on the interwebs. Gigantic eff nose to that!!

If I am Pete & Co., I'm all over Justin Fields in FA + Tet McMillan at #6 to combo with Bowser and Meyers; and then the best mid-round QB/RB/OL swing(s) they can find this year and beyond.

But first, immediately get to re-signing Graham *and* Leonard, re-doing Maxx's deal to make him a top-3 paid NFL defender and Raider for life, and consulting Maxx on which of the umpteen UFA Raider defenders they should prioritize re-signing (Spillane, Chiasson, Hobbs, Adam Butler, Koonce, maybe Moehrig would be my priorities, in order). There is plenty of existing talent on this defense, when you consider the above names + Wilkins, Pola-Mao, Jack Jones (if Pete can harness him, I dunno), Bennett, Amari Gainer (mystery how this guy didn't get regular season looks after his monster preseason), and dare I suggest, perhaps even Tyree Wilson. They showed that in spades in 2023 and in glimpses last year, despite having ridiculous injury misfortune and absolute zero complimentary play from their non-existent offense/running game.

AP did not leave the cupboard bare, especially on defense. But there is lots of work to be done to keep the finer pieces from being stolen, while filling in the gaps that exist, particularly the gaping holes on the offensive side at QB, RB and WR1.

Agree 100% with your take, particularly the notes on continuity/longer leash due to his track record. He’s not a sexy coaching pick but he’s exactly the kind of coach this team and franchise desperately needs. And the “player’s coach”, culture aspect….seems we have our Rah Rah AP replacement with MarShawn Lynch in the house screaming “Raaaaaiiiiiiddddders!” During the press conference. :)

And I think his statement on final say and collaboration is likely how every single consistently winning franchise runs: great leaders respect others areas of expertise and it’s the group’s effort combined that leads to great decisions, and not one dude with overrule power. That’s how I like to lead at least, and believe that collaboration and “great ideas come from everywhere” is the way to build a strong culture and winning plan.

Love this plan, though I wouldn’t be upset if the best OL is there at 1.6 and we take him. Or one of the top 2 rookie QBs.
If not QB at 1.6, then I love grabbing one of that big next tier of rookie QBs (Milroe, Dart, Gabriel, Howard, etc) in the 2nd or 3rd. And we know we have a solid .500 backup QB in AOC, imo.

Excited for this draft. Damn you, optimism!!!!!

Have not had a chance to post much last couple weeks but I wanted to applaud the hiring of Carroll.
Easily the best hiring of anyone so far this off season.
Yeah he's old, yeah the offense isn't gonna be high flying but I anticipate him turning the defense around AND...
I have one big cherry on top of this that I haven't heard mentioned but it was the first thing that went thru my mind when they hired Pete

LVR at No 6 or whatever they pick in the Draft, they likely won't have a QB fall to them in the 1st round and I doubt Pete will trade up.
Carroll will start looking at QBs the Raiders can draft without giving up extra draft capital.
He did it when Seattle drafted Wilson in the 3rd round which gave them a huge advantage for 3-4 seasons, they loaded up at other positions
Seattle was never quite the same after they paid Wilson top dollar and had to make cuts at other spots.

Pete Carroll wrote the playbook on drafting a cheaper QB you can actually start in the NFL and build around them while they are on a rookie deal
I expect him to find at least one arm in this draft and perhaps even 2 and let them compete over the summer and in training camp
I have to believe this type of conversation unfolded when Carroll was interviewing and the fact LVR is mostly QB-Empty at the moment might have been appealing to Carroll
Low expectations or under promise and over deliver.

I think the Raiders will look more like a professional organization over the upcoming season and things will be much brighter by the time Week 1 rolls around
Brady must have had some heavy influence on this, I assume he knows what he's doing. I watched him walk on to my Bucs' team and turn them into Champions quickly
I think Brady will have a huge impact with the Raiders now that he is part owner of the team.

It is a solid plan to take BPA in round 1 and not reach for a QB. Take a QB in round 2 or 3 and patiently build a team. Going BPA when missing out on a QB in the last draft worked out as well as it could.
