Innernet nerds: how much bandwidth is too much? (1 Viewer)

Otis

Footballguy
I recently bought some super silly uber fast tricked out network speed from Verizon which costs a small fortune. I work from home a fair amount, and when I do I connect to remote work systems via Citrix and use webex fairly frequently, and we use lots of Netflix and Fios streaming, and like most houses we have like a brzillion iPads and iPhones and iWatches and other junk gobbling webz all day, so I figured it would be worthwhile. You can't run the Otis account from dial up. But a GB told me it's a total waste of money and we are never using even a third of what we pay for.

How mich bandwidth is too much/a waste of money for a normal household?  How much do I need for a snappy, reliable connection?

TIA

I think you could run all that with 100MB and still be fine.

I used to have no real issues between the wite on FB, me here/surfing/youtube and two kids constantly on Netflix when we had 50 MB

Most FBGs need at least 100 gigs a month to manage their money on the conservative end.

Assuming you provide free internet to your immediate staff you may want to double that.

There are use limits on house internet in the US?

I thought that was only the developing world

It's not so much a question of how much bandwidth, since almost all residential connections are shared.  So, while you may have a 100Mbps down and 10Mbps up, you could still have moments where Netflix buffers or whatnot if your neighborhood node is getting overwhelmed.  Additionally, while you may not always be nearing your down/up limit and thus not consistently utilizing your available bandwidth, that's not what you're paying for.  You're paying for those moments where 3-4 people are streaming in your household, playing online gaming, uploading pics to some cloud storage, RDPing into a work environment, etc.  While that may not happen often, you can guarantee that you'd need banwidth limits much higher than the lowest provided by ISPs.

25 or 50 down is usually a good number for households doing a ton of streaming and gaming.  You also want about 15-20 up too.  If you have fiber to the home you might have a synchronous connection and will get the same for both down and up, which is always nice.

I'm currently getting around 300 up/down at the far end of my wifi; something like 600-700 into the router.  The research I'm doing is telling me that my good buddy may be right, and I could save a bunch of coin bumping back down to a reasonable speed.

Turns out I was paying or the 750MB plan; ratcheting down to 150 to see how it goes.  Hoping no hiccups; apologies from the entire Otis account family for any further drop-off in content or responsiveness during this transition period.

What do you consider a small fortune?  And whatever the price just make sure we continue to be able to get diet and Hawkscreech updates.

Just a hard go-live, no testing?  You running things like Trump now?

Otis must be in some sort of database where companies find clients that are easily tricked into paying way too much for everything.

Do you have fiber to them home?  Who's your ISP?  750Mbps (not MB) is HUGE for bandwidth.  Like crazy huge.  150 is more than plenty.

Ah just peeked at the Verizon fios plans and saw the 750.  Wow.  That is insanely high.  I mean, in 5-10 years, that might seem like a reasonable amount for a household, but right now that's crazy high.  The only need for that is if you're hosting a small data center in your house.

Yeah it's Verizon Fios.  Every time they've offered a new speed I've bumped up.  It's just been a few bucks more each time.  But looking back, it totals up to a fair amount.

You seem like a fairly level headed chap, not at all susceptible to the power of advertising. Hard to imagine you being suckered in to paying for way more than you needed.

:lmao:

I've never had any issues with Verizon standard package and we have all those things as well. I've had zero reason to bump up to even quantum. Lmao at 750mb

unless your hosting some sex webcam streaming services then 750 is too much. 100-150 is the gravy range. anything less probably sucks anything more is too beaucoup

:lmao:   :lmao:

And here I felt guilty running 150Mb FiOS for the home office.

We're an ISP/VoIP provider that runs a 20 person office on a 100Mb cable from Spectrum (nee TWC.) Granted there's a world of difference between business class w/ dedicated IPs and residential, but nobody needs 750Mb for Netflix & chill.

The 150 is perfect. Everything running rock solid.  Also, because my Eero network is pretty solid, I'm getting that full 150 in my home office via Wifi. :win:

Otis you aren't really a human anymore are you? You were saved onto a hard drive and hate getting your posts interrupted by you kids playing call of duty.

This really is amazing. I know lots of us miss ole "Late 20's bringing skanks home from the bar" Otis but "middle aged and rich so I just piss away money" Otis is still big time schtick.

Keep doing you GB.

I can't imagine the laugh the sales team at Verizon was having over this one.  You're probably putting some dude's kids through college.

Otis is correct. He had 750MB at home, not Mbps. His access to the information super highway was more extensive than we ever knew.

How much did they charge you for 750? Going rate for Google fiber is $70/month for 1 Gbit or $50/month for 100 Mbit. I'm definitely paying for more internet than I need but I do it so I can feel superior to others, so it's worth it.

Just a little feedback, Otis: the rest of the thread is fine, but your posts are taking longer than usual to load. Also, the formatting is off and everything is spread really wide. Maybe jump back up to 250 MB.

Even 150 seems insanely high.  I would say 50 or possibly 100.  I run 50 at my house (spectrum) and have ZERO issues and we're constantly online gaming, streaming, working, etc...
