I just don't understand why Apple doesn't put a microSD slot, miniusb and hdmi port in these things. I will never buy one because of it. I guess I know why, you have to spend an extra $70 in accessories and $100 for a $13 flash chip. The genius of it is fanboys call this a "feature".

Could probably do without the 'fanboy' part, but let's ignore his point and focus on it instead. FWIW...the rest of it is spot on. Makes no sense to me as a consumer. Makes all the sense in the world for Apple as a revenue generator.

My comment was in reference to the one and the fanboy comments but yes I agree it's unfortunate they've not included those features. Of course, the pricing in his post is a bit absurd as well. Can get an HDMI out port, plus a card reader for about $30 total. The $100 for a $13 flash chip is a bit odd as well, unless he's talking about the upcharge from 16 to 32 and such... but every OEM has similar charges for capacity increases. hen again, I don't want logic to get in the way of his overemtional rant. Carry on gsmayes. Work thyself into a lather.

I suspect his point is, at that price point, he shouldn't have to be buying "accessories" for iPad that are default to other products at the same price point.

I wasn't trying to start a battle. The only apple thing I own is an iPod nano from the generation right before they added a camera and FM (I think) to it.

At this point I'm seriously considering getting an iPad (not sure which version) and I'm trying to learn the pros/cons. The big problem is that generally speaking, I'm a value guy. My work schedule has me in hotels 4-7 nights per month and I'd want the iPad to allow me to watch stuff on the big screen while in bed. I don't want to necessarily hold the iPad to do so.

Wife and I are also taking a trip in August where we'll spend about 18 hours on a plane, so I'd like to have something for entertainment during that. The iPhoto/iMovie thing intruiges me as well since we have tons of pics and movies of the kids. I have friends that use nothing but Apple and swear by it...I just haven't really figured out the "why" yet.

If I have an iPad, and a Nano, and a windows-based home PC, are those things able to work together seamlessly sharing files and such or is that a pain?

Did you look at a netbook?

Not really, no. I wanted something to carry everywhere in the house without damaging so my goal has been a tablet/desktop PC combination for a while. Breaking my laptop just accelerated the process. I wanted to wait a year or two on an Android tablet with good features to come cheap but the OS didn't feel ready and the price points were not low enough. I just wanted it for media consumption anyways.

What TV panels even support Airplay at this point? I just got a Pioneer Receiver that does and it is real nice with this feature.

I will say that pushing 1080p content over airplay is just going to nuke bandwidth inside a home network. There will always be reasons to have cable connected hardware. Even if you have your content local to your ipad pushing that to your TV directly (lets not even get streaming in the mix here, yet) is going to be a real strain on the 2-Wire type systems people have more often nowadays.

Heck, one of the biggest complaints was lag on the original AppleTV just trying to push dvd quality streams over wifi (which is basically the same thing as airplay+ipad). I think the next appletv will support the gigabit routers, but those aren't really catching on for home use yet.

Yes - for the most part. Only downside is you will have to convert/obtain your video in a format playable on the ipad. Not a huge deal with some advance planning.I have had an ipad for 1.5 years now. To be honest I use it less then I used to. It is fantastic for travel, watching media etc as you describe. I used to use it a lot more for web browsing but find myself choosing the laptop more often then not now. Im a multiple browser window/multiple app at the same time guy - and its just too much of a pain with an ipad relative to a computer.

Also on the fence here. I've always used the latest iPhone. Currently have the 4S and it pretty much keeps me company when I travel. I travel for my job on planes 75% of the time. As long as there's a place to charge my iPhone in the airport, I have no problems watching a few hour movie or a classic baseball game or something of that nature. When I don't feel like watching TV, I have a good hundred books on my iPhone. I guess the only appeal for me is a bigger screen I suppose? I have good eyes, and can read easily on the iPhone, I don't know. I guess I never saw the point. I'll read through this thread and see if there's feature that would convince me otherwise I guess. I want one but not for any specific purpose, I guess, just to have one, which is a dumb move.

Does Airplay allow me to connect an iPad to the HDTV in my hotel room when I am traveling so I can enjoy a movie on a large screen?

Well i travel extensively and I rarely am in the room watching movies, however If you bring the wallet sized AppleTV box, then you get to enjoy the nice wireless experience of Airplay. That way you're not having to sit 6' away from the TV, or have to jump up off the bed every time you want to pause or rewind something. If you're dead set on tethering your tablet to the TV via HDMI via physical cable then yes, you have to come off a whopping $28. If I had an iPad with retina display I'd likely rather watch the movie on that screen. Likely a much better picture than the in-room TV. That said... the MAJORITY of the "streaming" i do from my iphone or ipad is at home. Music, videos, etc... that thats much much better through airplay. I can have my iphone in my pocket, adjust playlists, songs from anywhere around the house. Cables are a dying breed. Old technology.

I love how every solution you offer is to buy something extra. Personally, I'm not too keen on spending $28 on something that I assume costs less than a dollar to make. And hey, if I'm going to spend $30 on a freaking cable, I might as well go with the AppleTV for $100.Apple makes good software, no doubt, but it's not worth the price premium they put on their hardware. I just don't get it, if they added these cheap features that don't really add to the cost much, it'd be by far the best tablet out there. Instead, they purposely cripple it for some people.

I think you're missing the point here. VERY few people use HDMI out to TV on their tablets. Apples Airplay is a MUCH better solution for the vast vast majority of people. It's integrated into a lot of home theater components now. My father just bought a denon amp that had airplay built in. Now he uses their iPad to control his home stereo system outside on their patio (zone 2) or inside (zone 1). Play music, watch TV, stream video, whatever. It's all one system and he loves it. THAT is what Apple is about. Apple pulled floppy drives and people flipped out saying "But people still use floppies!" Whatever. They died soon after and they still sold millions of iMacs. Apple refused to support flash because of the problems with it. PEople flipped out saying "You can't NOT support flash". Well not Adobe has abandoned Mobile flash and apple has sold hundreds of millions of iOS Devices. Flash is on it's deathbed. Apple DIdn't include Optical drive in Air, and is pulling it from MBP's soon. People will flip out saying "You CAN'T not have a CD drive". Bull####.They'll still sell millions of units and the CD will be dead soon. Apple doesn't include HDMI and instead provides super-easy wireless option that is light years ahead. A few of you guys are screaming "You CAN'T not have an HDMI output" Yet somehow they'll sell them by the dumpsterload and everything will continue to move toward wireless. IF you're dead set on doing things the old way (being tied to the TV with cables) then the iPad isn't for you. That's fine. But Apple has never been one to cling to old technology for the benefit of people who refuse to move on from legacy tech. Not now. Not ever. It certainly doesn't seem to be a problem to the vast majority of people.

If I understand it right it's a technology that lets you stream to your tv or other device.You need to buy AppleTV to stream videos to your tv currently. So to accomplish this you need to buy an AppleTV and IPAD. Music can be donw with other devices.It's much like streaming media from your pc to your xbox using windows media extender.I think

Unless it's changed you need to buy AppleTV for any pictures and video.Don't think any TV's have it yet. Some audio receivers support music through itunes/airplay

You can either:Buy AppleTV ($99) : Which gives you netflix, pandora browser, Apps, etc in addition to streaming video/audio/etc via AirPlay. Similar to Roku, GoogleTV, etc but it's light years ahead with regards to integration if you've got other Apple Devices.

Buy a Airplay Enabled Receiver or like these Denon systems that have the tech built in. In addition there are iOS apps that give you full control of the denon receiver from anywhere.

I'm not sure $100 for a Wifi Hotspot / Audio Streaming hub is really gouging. There might be cheaper options out there (not sure if there are or not) but non that are on par functionality/integration wise. And they can be had for $50 all day on ebay.

Dumb stuff like putting YouTube videos on your tv from your iPhone is great fun when you have people over.

yep. I'll likely get rid of my appleTV when I upgrade my receiver this fall. My pop got a denon unit for $400 or so and it is SLICK. Not only is the sound fantastic (as you would expect from Denon) but the App + Airplay turns their iPad into the world's baddest remote control (in addition to being a great browsing/etc device) Anyways... point is: THIS is where it's all headed. The idea of being tethered to your TV with an HDMI cable is endangered. It's frankly silly when you have so many other great options out there to do things better.

AppleTV is 99 bucks and supports 1080pHonestly though if you've already got a Roku then definitely don't need an ATV. (which you astutely knew).

if you're in the market for a Home Theater Receiver then strongly consider looking into Airplay Enabled ones.

Many things do YouTube my wii even my direc tv. But with ATV I can use my iPhone or iPad to search so much better then using a remote. Also like being able to show pics with it stream my videos from my iPhone to it.

I believe you ordered the 32 GB ipad yes? So you paid $99 for a mere 16GB extra in storage space. No features at all, just storage space.Apple TV is a bargain compared to that.

I honestly don't care much about this stuff (streaming youtube, etc etc to my tv) but curiousfor any ripped movies on my home pc could I stream through apple tv? Assuming it needs to be converted?There is a reason I bought a 27in monitor for my pc

I honestly don't care much about this stuff (streaming youtube, etc etc to my tv) but curiousfor any ripped movies on my home pc could I stream through apple tv? Assuming it needs to be converted?There is a reason I bout a 27in monitor for my pc

I stream movies directly from iTunes on my iMac. These are movies I have ripped to my iMac using handbrake.

Not an iPad question, but is the Apple TV upgrade a hardware upgrade or a software upgrade? I already have an Apple TV, am I going to have to buy a new one to get the new features?

both. but, i think main improvement is gigabit router support.

I believe you ordered the 32 GB ipad yes? So you paid $99 for a mere 16GB extra in storage space. No features at all, just storage space.Apple TV is a bargain compared to that.

well, that's to improve the functionality of a $500 ipad that I plan to use for the next 3+ years.I don't see how the apple tv would really get much use for me. I already have several devices that do basically the same thing. I don't own an apple computer and don't think I ever will. I just have an iphone and will have an ipad. That's about the extent of my apple ownership.

Apple TV is cool if you're running macbooks/imacs & iOS stuff. A waste if not.

Agreed. If you don't have iOS devices or don't have a ton of media hosted on iTunes on your home's media server, then a Roku is definitely the way to go.

yeah if you're not looking to dive fully into the ecosystem then no sense in getting ATV. Just grab a APlay enabled receiver and call it a day. Hell there are a bunch of older denon receivers that offer free AP upgrades over your network.I'm an Amazon Prime Junkie as well.
