Other than the chip difference (A5X vs. A6X), what other noticeable differences are there between the iPad with Retina Display that was released in March 2012 and October 2012?

Is there anyway to use the hdmi adapter to mirror the ipad3 in 16:9? Hbogo automatically changes it, but YouTube, other apps and the home screen are all 4:3. Is there a setting to change?

So the "a lot to cover" tagline didn't mean a new smart cover/keyboard.
I might want this to upgrade my "new" ipad as it was then dubbed. What a bad idea that name was. It's iPad3.

Yes. The form factor and other minor tweaks of the subsequent ones was not worth the added display resolution. The 2 was the ideal size/weight.

I don't understand. What were you expecting? It would be one thing to say, "underwhelming announcement" if there were something expected that was missing. But there wasn't. This was about the new iPad (impressive), retina Mini (check), Mavericks (check...plus it's free!), and the ship date of the Pro. Plus they updated the Macbook Pro. What was underwhelming about it? Outside of mini's that had colors like the ip5c I'm not sure what you could have possibly been anticipating. Basically everything except the Air has been refreshed in the last 6 weeks.

I can't speak for 'GunZ, but I would guess plenty of people didn't expect the new ipadMINI to jump up to $399 in price. Especially since so many people were surprised that the MINI wasn't released with a retina display in the first place. If anything I thought that the MINI might fall to $299 so it was at least in shouting distance of the latest Nexus 7.
Some also might have expected a price increase to at least boost the lowest end memory to 32GB. When making comparisons between the MINI and the Nexus 7 things look even more out of whack at a more usable 32GB version. The 32GB MINI costs $499 while the 32GB Nexus 7 costs $269.
Overall I think most people were expecting to hear a compelling reason apple won't continue to lose share in the tablet space the way they did in the phone space.

Thinking about buying a couple 2's for Christmas. There is nothing wrong with them. Until try bring out the iPad Giant, I have no reason to buy a newer model.

Yeah, they are noticeably better in terms of performance, handing, etc. We have the first gen (my 3 yr old uses it) and the 3rd generation (wifey's). Once you have the retina screen and quicker performance, using the old joint sucks.I still have a first gen iPad and while I'm sure the newer ones are noticeably better in terms of performance, I like it.

No doubt - it's a personal choice. For me, it would be hard to buy 2 iPads with old technology for what, $700, when for $900 I could get the brand new top of the line iPads that are vastly superior by any objective standard.
But it's certainly a personal choice.

So I just got $200 for my iPad 1. Yes, the 4 year old original iPad. The iPad that cant run any app released in the last 1-2 years without crashing.

Dang, that is pretty good. How much is a new iPad there? I have a 36GB first Gen.
A mini is $299 and comes with a $25 gift card. So I could conceivably trade in my 1st g and get a mini for $75.

I thought about trading mine in for a new one. I have the 3rd iPad and it's still it mint condition and runs perfectly for everything I do with it. iBooks, Netflix, New York Times Crossword Puzzle App, Watch ESPN and Comcast Streampix all run perfectly.
I've had mine in a case since I bought it, there's not a blemish on the thing in the 2 years I've had it, any reason to upgrade or take the Target gift card for it?

Depends on how much you use it. If you're like my wife, and you use it for probably 2-3 hours per day, perhaps it is worth it to get the slimmed down, lighter, and significantly more powerful iPad Air.
If it's not your nightly reader/browser/etc - probably not.
Wow, nice! I was close to pulling the trigger on the Surface trade in but didn't really want it. Now I can use the gift card for other stuff and get a Nexus or something.

Yeah, I keep it on my night stand to watch espn at night before bed for the most part and travel very often where I just rent a movie From iTunes. I guess I don't see the need. I'm all about bigger and better and the free 200 dollars is so tempting, but this thing has never let me down and im not thinking nows the time to part with it. Stupid me - in addition to my earlier post, I also use it as a video recorder for my band and there's a few piano player campanion apps that I use very often when I don't have accompaniment. A lighter version might be good in that respect.

Nope, just the device. All they do is go into the settings to get the model number, erase the device, then stick it in a drawer.

Wish this was around last week. Bought my wife an Air to replace iPad1. Not sure what to do with her old one. My wife has mentioned wanting to donate it to gorillas/chimps/apes, which is something people do, I guess.
