Is Kevin Smith a must own for Best owners? (1 Viewer)

Owning J. Best has definitely been a rollercoaster ride thus far and while I'm nervous enough about his production the remainder of the season with his toe issues and low rushing totals to continue rostering Kevin Smith as his handcuff, there are so many other options I'd like to explore with Smith's roster spot. So, I ask fellow Best owners: are you confident in Best's health/production the rest of the season or has Smith become a must roster handcuff?

I may be risking it, but I decided to drop Kevin Smith for L. Blount this week. I simply didn't have enough RB depth to waste a spot on my roster for a guy who I don't really see that much out of, even if Best gets hurt.

I'll probably be kicking myself when Best goes down and Smith puts up huge number though.

I think it boils down to what Smith can do coming off the injury last year. If he is the Kevin Smith of old, I think he is must own for Best owners and maybe even a wise WW pickup in deeper leagues. But, I also think we would have seen more of him earlier in the year when Best was healthy, if he was the Smith of old.

Meh. I drafted Best and Smith but I dropped Smith pretty early on. No regrets.

Unless Best is out for an extended period of time with a new injury, I don't see Smith becoming too useful. Toes or not, Best still looks like the main guy in the offense with Smith getting scraps. I don't even know if Smith would be more than a flex if Best wasn't playing. I would (and did) drop Smith the first chance something with more upside comes along.

Starting K Smith this week with Best. Start 3 RB league. Rice/McCoy owner. Doh.

I picked Smith up a few weeks ago. I wasnt sure at the start of the season but he seems to be getting a few touches and I do think he'd get a decent portion of the workload if Best were to miss time.

Having said all that, here's to 150 total and 2 TDs from Best this week.

Man I hope so for the Skins Def has put a few player on the injury reports of late.

I wouldn't add him just yet, but keep an eye on the guy. Hes only been back 3 weeks from that ligament surgery and has been productive in the past. I can see him getting worked in the 2nd half of the season

I'm assuming this thread is based on redraft but in a Dynasty league I think Smith is a hold. He's only 23 years old and he showed as a rookie that he has some skill. If all the Best hype on this site is true, Smith may never see the field as a Lion but I think he's got potential to be picked up once his rookie contract expires. At that point he might have a shot starting somewhere else.

I get the feeling that Smith (assuming Best out) would be lost in a committee with Felton and possibly MoMo as well.

Smith's taking too long. (For FF) He needed to be a good backup right away since the start was late.

One thing that Best inadvertently hurts him with is he doesn't get a chance to get the work in and get confident after the injury.

At some point later on in the season, if I were Schwartz, I'd get Smith more reps hope he does well and increase his trade value. While doing that, he also helps keep Best healthy for 2011.

Their line isn't horrible anymore, but they still need better players. If a coach/OC is going to game plan for a ton of carries by one RB, the quality of the OL has to affect his risk to injury too.

I guess I'm saying when it's enough experience for Best, leave it at that. In Best, they seem to have landed a vital piece to rebuilding that team. With impressive WR, QB, RB, and TE, if they can hit the OL in the draft next year or in free agency, that O could be one of the most improved in the NFL almost instantly. I think they'd better be careful with Best.

BTW I think Smith is a decent NFL RB that might (eventually) sign elsewhere or get traded and we'll hear from him again. A buddy of mine disagrees and calls him Kevin Jones II.

Hasn't his brief career already shown not only that he's better, but that coach believes he is too?

Do what now?

If you have the roster space I would do it while he's cheap. People say just wait, but if Best gets hurt this weekend, you are praying you are top of your waiver list, having enough free agent auction dollars to bid on him or are the first guy who can run to his PC. Shallow benches, bye weeks and injuries make it hard, but if you can pull it off why not?

No, Kevin Smith is not a must own. Even if Best did get hurt, there's no evidence that Smith is good enough to carry the load himself nor do I believe the Lions would even give him the chance. There are a couple other guys on the roster that would dip into the overall carries IF Best was out and FB Felton would probably get many of the goaline carries. It's Best or Bust IMO, use your roster spot on another player.

If Best went down, I think K. Smith would in fact step into Best's role. He won't do it near as well, or in the same fashion, but I think he'd be the primary ball carrier and receiving back. Felton has hands of stone, I don't guess he'd see much more than he already does, which is short yardage and suprise FB runs. There isn't much else there on the roster, and Smith has been looking better each game, I think he's gradually getting more and more confident and healthy.

Just my .02$, as a faithful Lion's fan.

Thought Kevin Smith's been a must own for Best owners from Day 1. He was dirt cheap and he can produce RB2 #'s (fantasy starter) at worst if Best were to go out. Can't really ask for much else out of a backup RB.

Smith looked pretty good bouncing some runs to the outside. Best got decent amount of touches but with the game on the line, Smith was in.

I think I saw this on my phone so I'm not 100%- But didn't Smith NOT get the first down? We thinking about the same last big drive?

Here

# Detroit Lions at 02:10

# 1-10-WAS 20 (2:10) 34-K.Smith up the middle to WAS 23 for -3 yards (98-B.Orakpo).

# Timeout #2 by WAS at 02:07.

# 2-13-WAS 23 (2:07) 34-K.Smith up the middle to WAS 15 for 8 yards (41-K.Moore).

# Two-Minute Warning

# 3-5-WAS 15 (1:59) 34-K.Smith up the middle to WAS 14 for 1 yard (92-A.Haynesworth, 52-R.McIntosh).

# Timeout #3 by WAS at 01:54.

# 4-4-WAS 14 (1:54) 4-J.Hanson 32 yard field goal is GOOD, Center-48-D.Muhlbach, Holder-2-N.Harris. WATCH HIGHLIGHT

So, I'm not sure whether that will still be a coach's vote of confidence in a player next week

Not sure, I stopped watching after the Suh TD. But when the game outcome was still in doubt, the Lions used Smith more.

posted same time. Just felt like that needed to be pointed out. I too was impressed he was in, but I wonder now

1200 total yds 8 TDs his rookie year.1100 total yds 5 TDs last year before he go hurt.you're trippin.....

Yeah I remember all the ppl complaining last year when K Smith was only avg 3.4 yds a carry, coming into this game Best was at 3.2.

Both RBs will/should play...

Well if its a Best/Smith rotation, then its no better than the Miami situation

In fact I own Ronnie and Jahvid in one league, and neither has started for a month (Tolbert and Torain - who'd a thunk it)

I'm not sure if Kevin Smith is a must own because I don't think either Detroit back will be productive enough (though in tandem they should be effective)

ETA: e.g., they'll be better IRL than FF

I guess it depends... If you're number 1 when it comes to waiver priority I would say leave him alone. Then if Best does get hurt you can assure yourself that you'll get him through waivers. But if you don't have a high waiver priority then you might want to consider it.
