My kid’s ff team includes Chase Brown and he made his team logo (on espn) a cop and his team name is “I Chase Brown Kids”. I think it’s potentially offensive to some people (and just not funny) and suggested he change it. He thinks it’s funny and says all of his friends think so too. He thinks it’s a generational difference because I’m over 50 and he’s 21. I’m curious how this board feels about it.

Well yeah obviously it's in extremely poor taste. And like you said, not even funny.

You're right on both accounts. It's potentially offensive and your child's generation is sadly a whole lot more racist than our generation. The stuff they talk about amongst themselves is nuts, especially if they're male and gravitate to people that are right-wing or right-wing adjacent. I came from the young right back in the nineties and stuff that we didn't even think of is now publicly spoken among themselves at times. The topics they discuss at times are really questionable in how certain beliefs are deployed and they either tend towards SJW stuff or they tend towards inappropriate (to us) discussions born from beliefs that seek to explain social phenomena using genetic or inherent differences as root or primary cause. I keep seeing stuff like open discussions of racial explanations for social phenomena, which is very much on the rise. Authors like Steve Sailer and people that believe in heritable IQ and inherent racial differences in IQ and criminality are freely read and accepted and those topics are freely discussed in certain spaces.

It is potentially really dangerous regardless of how you feel about the issues and no matter whether you think those things are true. It's dynamite, especially in children's hands.

I also don't think we should circle wagons and tut-tut either child or parent. This is exactly how they're talking. A lot of them. I keep hearing adults my age surprised that the youth are both as right-wing as they are and that they tend towards saying the exact things that people practicing identity politics tried to get rid of for about the past thirty-five years. It failed spectacularly and they revel in smashing the taboos put in place.

I think people need to get out a little more or immerse themselves or sit on social media for about a few weeks to get a bead on this. If you're offended by it the kids love it and if you "clutch pearls" they revel in it. I think it would behoove people to understand why they're doing it so conversations can be had. This is a wildly racist, anti-semitic, and even sexist bunch. You'd be surprised. They took our shibboleths that were guilty of overreach and they're torching them. The anti-semitism is an especially frightening characteristic/feature that we need to get out in front of before it gets crazy.

Not if he’s my kid and he’s representing me.

The kid isn't representing the father if I'm reading right. He's not at Pop's work or anything. It's an ESPN FF team.

This is wrong and you know it and you come here and spew this blather. Jeez man you don’t have to drop in on every conversation and try and be all contrarian all the time.

Not directly but it’s on a public website. Chances of anyone I know seeing it are slim but I work with a very diverse group. If someone I did know saw it and was offended by something my son wrote, I’d be mortified. I’ve got a great relationship with my kids, if I told them to change something like this, they would. I work with a lot of 20 something’s. I don’t see the same racist attitude you do.

It's very different. Imagine an intellectual bigot and why they might feel the way they do. That's how you're able to address it effectively. I traveled in this stuff for thirty-five years so I'm familiar with all the attitudes. They see the overreach of all things politically correct and they really rebel against the dumber tenets. But in doing that, they also transgress against its benefits and they adopt worldviews that have the potential to be very dangerous. It's not good.

Potentially offensive to some people?

It’s absolutely offensive and racist and stupid and not humorous at all.

Hey man, too bad if you don't get it. I see this and hear this all the time. I have a nephew and a niece this age and I worked for a right-wing think tank and know the elements on the right doing this.

Don't tell me what to do and don't assume you know my motivation. I don't appreciate it. If you want to be dogmatic, do it with somebody else. I'm very familiar with these movements and where they come from. Don't lecture me, pal.

That's fine. You have every right to feel that way. Hmmm. I have no finger on the pulse of twenty something year olds, but doubt they’ve become more -ist than the generations that precede them.

Maybe it’s just a vocal minority, like the incel demographic?

No, they very much have. They found among the young right that they were 7 times more likely to express views that would normally be considered anti-semitic when compared to other age groups. It was staggering.

They postulated that anti-semitism would show a "horseshoe" effect where both the radical left and radical right would express these attitudes similarly—in other words, that it would be the extremism that caused the attitudes and not the political disposition. They were wrong. The young right, especially minority or right-wingers who were not caucasian, were wildly disproportionately anti-semitic. As a matter of fact, the young right has divided into two groups: one anti-semitic and one not. They have slang terms for them. No BS. This exists.

But as a general rule, younger people still lean more liberal, correct? Pew poll
  • About two-thirds of voters ages 18 to 24 (66%) associate with the Democratic Party, compared with 34% who align with the GOP.
  • There is a similarly large gap in the partisan affiliation of voters ages 25 to 29 (64% are Democrats or lean that way vs. 32% for Republicans).

Not the men. I think they might be more liberal overall, but they're more right-wing than in the past. I'd have to look at it again. The women are very liberal. In fact, probably the most liberal generation ever.

The men are wild. They're very right-wing (compared to younger generations that preceded them).

I mean, I guess I could see bigoted views increasing in the context of economic realities, where younger generations are feeling hopeless, and want to scapegoat somebody - I had always assumed that hostility would be directed at “Boomers”, not racial/ethnic/religious minorities.

this is different and it's prevalent. This is what I found at eigenrobot on Twitter. He's a Twiiter guy who attracts the right.

These are the two groups I was talking about:

the "mischling right" isnt exactly jewish, not exactly christian, but its not anti those things either except in a vaguely nitzschean sense. My note: these are not antisemites

"mongrel right" is nominally christian but actually just coprophiles My note: these are the antisemites to the best I can understand it.

I definitely don’t think you’re advocating for this.

But to assert that those of us responding negatively is because it’s not in our experience so we think it doesn’t exist/isn’t prevalent is also insulting.

And I’m not telling him what to say or how to act. I’m telling him that his fantasy football team name is racist and offensive and not funny. He can do with it whatever he pleases. I think ultimately he’ll regret it, though.

I was talking about what ChiefD told me and also what fruity pebbles was saying he'd tell an adult.

It's not insulting to you at all unless you take it that way and feel guilty about it. Read what ChiefD said to me. Utterly ridiculous to think you have the right to tell a grown man that.

On the surface, this seems like it would be offensive. Are we missing any context here? What if half of his league is "brown" people? What if one of his "brown" friends suggested it? Would that change people's opinions?

This thread on Twitter begins to address what I'm talking about. I'm not saying the movement is huge or mainstream but it's very noticeable. I'm not even "down." I just know exactly these thoughts and ideological underpinnings because I'm used to it. I worked down in DC for ultraconservatives so I'm used to the authors and the ideas discussed here. I've heard it all before.

This feels like a screen name I would see from some young kid beating the **** out of me in online NHL 25 games.

So many offensive to varying degrees names there that are only made worse from the fact that it's from a 13 year old who's beating me 9-1 and trash talking the entire time.

Which is mostly to say, I'm not surprised all his friends find it funny and he'll probably go undefeated.

Also, kids these days, etc... I guess?

Yeah, I don't want to get too heavy about it, but (you might be surprised that this is where I get a bit conscious and tolerant at heart) this is actually a sort of serious problem within the intellectual and institutionally organized right. When I was involved with politics and working at the place I did there was a consciousness that this stuff didn't or shouldn't get trafficked with our sanction because for whatever reason, when one advocates for less of the current federal government, you don't get just the libertarians but also those seeking to replace the federal government with something more conducive to a less accepted and desirable set of beliefs and desires. So we'd get the racists, anti-semites, theocrats, and fascists coming out of the woodwork and you had to be conscious and aware of it.

It's like a Marxist crashing an event put on by the Democratic Party in San Francisco or Cambridge, MA. That kind of stuff.

And if I'm able at all to judge how mainstream it's become, it's actually quite serious and worrying. The establishment doesn't exist anymore so there's nobody to keep it at bay. It's decentralized and spread out—it's not checked due to its populist nature and the power vacuum which allows it to become mainstreamed.

And yeah, it's the kids, but if this is what they're trafficking in without supervision, then we've got an issue.

eta* and it's serious and worrying because it's primarily a youth movement that lets you know you're irrelevant and old, and therefore, you have little to add because you let things get so messed up. You would have stopped this liberal overreach if your ideas were effective or legitimate.

Don't take my admonishments as any sort of endorsement. Understanding why they're saying what they're saying is crucial. They don't accept what we did when it comes to issues of race, sex, religion, or class.

I wouldn't be "clutching pearls". I would be ***-kicking. Don't care what the cultural zeitgeist is. Still offensive. This is 60's Chicago talking here. Just no.

I will say contrary to everyone in here calling it extremely unfunny, and with most people knowing I'm one of the most liberal people here (I have the bannings to show for it...) it's a bit clever.

My context is probably different being in Canada and my nearest big city being Toronto, which is extremely populated with a lot of people who identify as "brown" in a non offensive way. (and you know, not having ICE).

I could read it as a meta commentary on police in places being racist themselves and targeting certain races without trying/stretching that much.

But probably still best to change it.

Kind of funny and also offensive. I always played in leagues where the team names were sort of offensive in one way or another. Not as problematic, but I had a team called James White People Problems. Same tone, but didn't have the same PC issue. But really, is it less offensive because his name was White instead of Brown? If you think there's a difference, you may want to consider why you're offended.

OK, nearly all of us old (mostly) men don’t like the name. And @rockaction thinks it reflects a more concerning ideological undercurrent, at least in a subset of youngins. Armed with this knowledge, what should we do?

I think all but maybe one were concerned, albeit in different ways. How interventionist he wants to be is the issue, I guess. I think the majority of people found it fairly offensive and would ask him or force him to remove it or change it. There were three or four of us that could see it from another vantage point (me, Galileo, NV, and -fish-) and out of those one thought it would be better if he put the kibosh on it (NV) and I thought personally (I'm pretty laissez-faire in general about this stuff because I think these things are highly contextual) that there should be at least what is hopefully a free-flowing and casual conversation to make sure this isn't a political thing that reflects a more odious and troubling ideology (I think this is pretty coded, actually, and that if he really talks to the young man it's not going to be just a humorous joke but something deeper). Galileo just inquired and left it alone so we don't know his opinion or remedy suggestion, while -fish- was really laissez-faire about it and has made racial jokes involving caucasians and seems to wonder why we won't allow the same for darker-skinned folks. The rest of you all seemed to be really offended and thought it best to put the kibosh on it. That seems to represent the clear majority.

That's sort of the summary of who and what. What he does is really up to him, and off of the top of my head, this could have been a topic brought up by an infrequent user to stir things up here. Three hundred posts since 2003 is a really low number. But I don't think this is the kind of thing you can discuss, come to consensus, and then implement a plan or idea. It's a stranger's kid and we've given our opinions. I think it ends there, really.

As a whole, they’re not. But we’re far more likely to hear from those who are.
This type of talk has become accepted by more people than it has before, under the guise of freedom and self expression. It’s still racist and in bad taste no matter who does it.

It’s mostly weird and would be offensive to many people. Others have covered my thoughts in here about it not being funny but I’m curious what he says he finds funny about it.

One point I would make to him is putting something like that online (or any possibly offensive thing) could come back to bite him in the ***.

I didn’t follow this whole convo but I thought it was common knowledge at this point that young males are much more far right wing l we’ve seen in a long time. The most common words in online gaming are the n word, r word and f word. I think it all started “for the lolz” and to be an edge lord and now it’s just kind of become the way many of them think about minorities, women, etc. Many young women/girls are having a ton of problems dating right now because of it.
