Is Tony Dungy's job in jepoardy? (1 Viewer)

Given how horrible the Colts defense is, I think you have to wonder if Dungy will ever be able to get the Colts over the hump. Dungy was brought in to fix the defense, and while they made some improvements last year, they are as bad now as they were when he came to town.

Don't get me wrong, I like Dungy, and think he is a good coach, but I am not sure he is the guy who can coach the Colts to a Super Bowl win. Unless they somehow win the Super Bowl (or even make it) next month, is his job in jeopardy?

If it isn't, it ought to be.

As a coach, and presumably a defensive guru, the defense he has put together is pretty crappy.

Dungy's playing & coaching roots are in Pittsburgh, and his wife is from the area. It would be interesting whether the Steelers would consider him if Cowher retires and Indy parted with him.

That cover-2 crap relying on speed gets you beat in the playoffs. A good smash mouth OL and good running game beats that team every time if it isn't playing from behind. I don't know about you, but I would hate to rely on a defense that requires a lead in order to win.

It probably should be at this point. Big Dungy fan, but he has proven time and time again he can't get it done in the playoffs.

It worked for Tampa Bay and here is an interesting quote from Monte Kiffin.."The old Pittsburgh Steelers used it," said Tampa Bay defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin. Those Steel Curtain defenses won four Super Bowls in the 1970s. "Over the years, you know, coaches change some things."

How can you say a coach who leads his team to at least 11-5 and a Division Title is in jeopardy of losing his job?

The only problem that Dungy has is that his 3 Offensive stars take up nearly 30% of the cap room. His starting 11 Offensive players eat up over 40% of the Colts possible salary cap. If you include guys like Proehl, Stokely, Vinatieri, and H. Smith then you are over 50%!

That's 15 players taking up over 50% of the cap. That leaves 38 other players on the team with nearly no $ to around! No matter how you slice it, that cannot be good.

Look at the other aspects of their play. They are among the worst in the league on both Defense and Special Teams. It should be obvious to Polian ...

However, this is a organizational-wide issue. No matter what, they have to live under the cap ... The solution here will require these stars to take pay-cuts in order to have the best shot at a Super Bowl title.

Good post. Not only the $ but INDY has also neglected to invest a draft pick in the first two rounds of the draft since 2002 which is a little surprising. If you aren't going to spend the $ to retain your front seven defenders and you aren't going to draft guys to replace them is it really any wonder they can't stop the run? They've had a revolving door at LB yet the last time they drafted a LB in the top two rounds was in 2000.I don't blame Dungy nearly as much as the GM.

:goodposting:happy I was wrong here.edit: but before this playoffs, the statement certainly held true.

I think it wasn't so much the system as it was having the personnel.
