Jerry Sandusky accused of child molestation (3 Viewers)

I'm hoping Penn State wins today so the ####### students don't mistreat the Nebraska fans or riot after the game. Not looking good though.
I don't think that's much of a possibility. Now that there's been a cooling off period I expect the PSU fans to be civil unless they're rudely provoked by insensitive Nebraska fans.
I agree. I think most PSU fans are smart enough to know that the last thing they need now is more bad PR. I think any PSU fans that start mistreating any Nebraska fans would be quickly put in line be fellow PSU fans.

So allegedly if PSU wins, the team seniors are going to walk the game ball to JoePa's house? That's sweet.
Now I really hope they lose.
No, I think that's OK. For the seniors, it brings closure to their football relationship with Joe Pa. They - like everyone else - will need a lot of time to sort all of this out in their hearts and minds. These kids went to PSU to play football. Let's let them focus in on that for a few hours.I believe the pre-game events - the slow walk onto the field, the gathering with the Nebraska players, the time of silence - helped to frame the game in the appropriate context. If PSU wins, those young men can have some time with Paterno. I'm not going to judge them for that.
I'd rather see the players and fans worry more about the victims than the old man that covered up their rape. That's just me though.
Damned if they do, damned if they don't. These are guys whose lives have been positively shaped by JP and that can be acknowledged by them without diminishing the terrible behavior. I think they've made it exceptionally clear that the victims of abuse are foremost in their minds.

Haven't heard much discussed regarding Second Mile, but I think the leadership of that organization needs to be wiped clean also, if not discontinued altogether. They knew about the charges in 2002 and did nothing until 2008? And in reality, they didn't do much of anything then.

I will be surprised if Second Mile isn't disbanded. They will be the first target of lawsuits for most victims, and possibly the only target of lawsuits from the pre-1998 victims.

Hope so. Great comeback by the kids though.

yeah for all the blame thrown around, and well deserved, I haven't heard much about Second Mile. But I noticed that it's in the Grand Jury docuemnt that they were told in 2002 and maybe in 1998 too, right? I mean, what the hell? They're the ones "providing" the kids to Sandusky. Sick.

Yea its questionable. There are legal issues to be resolved and clarfied.Curley did, however, tell them that there was an investigation that yielded "no wrong doing occurred"

Wonder why victim #6's mother didn't go to authorities after she got Sandusky to admit to improper contact to her on the phone with campus police listening in?

School President, AD, Paterno, campus police, McQueery and dad, Second Mile heads. Got to think their was at least 10-15 people that knew what was going on. Probably many more then that.

A lot of people in that community had to have known. A LOT.

Because the authorities were already involved, and they told her that there wasn't enough evidence to arrest him.

Fwiw, Jerry Sandusky was listed as a consultant receiving $57,000 in compensation from Second Mile in 2008.

As a matter of fact, for FY 8-31-2002, he got $57,000.

For FY 8-31-2003 he got $57,000 Jerry was still listed on the BOT for Second Mile.

Similarly, for 8-31-2003, Sandusky got $57,000 and is still listed as a director.

After 2008, the federal reporting requirement went from a $50k threshhold to $100k, so if Jerry got anything from Second Mile after 2008, it's buried in the other numbers.

I have an 18th birthday dinner to go to, now, but it sure looks like Sandusky remained very involved with Second Mile throughout the 2000's. It would not be hard to tell exactly when he came off the BOD by going through all the 990's. He also appears to have been drawing $57,000 per year as a "consultant" from Second Mile throughout the 2000's.

He was active until 2008, when he notified them of the latest investigation.

Did she go to anyone outside the university?
She went to the county district attorney, who declined to press charges. She could have gone to the state police but they probably would have just referred the case back to the county.

So basically everyone knew. Wonderful.

That jerk got what he deserved. Wrong place for that.eta: I'd probably throw some beer at him or something. THe kids there, both on and off the field, deserve 3 hours of near relief from their college world collapsing around them in horrific fashion. Screw him. I wish he got worse from the crowd.
I've noticed you don't handle differing opinions very well.

How so? Because I think the guy's a jerk for throwing in the faces of the students that are just trying to get a little bit away from a terrible week? I agree with the guy almost totally in what he's saying, I just think where he's saying it is wrong and unfair. That's what I'd throw crap at him for, not for what he's saying.

Think a large % of people think the game/season should be canceled. He's protesting in exactly the right place.

"This has been a terrible week for Penn State University in general and Penn State football in particular. I think I'll get away from it all for three hours by attending a Penn State football game."

I can probably only say this with the benefit of hindsight, but I think the Board of Trustees should have fired Joe on Monday morning. Again, this was not an easy decision and there was an incredible tidal wave that just kept building on this story, so maybe it wasn't realistic to do this on Monday.

But I think a lot of the fan support behind Paterno is in direct response to the media attacking Paterno, which was in response to him still being on staff. I think if they fired Paterno immediately, the media doesn't come down nearly as harshly as it does on JoePa. Remember, as soon as Paterno was gone, then McQueary become the target of the media firestorm.

Spanier and Paterno could have been released immediately, and then the character of the whole story changes. There stops being debate about Paterno, and everyone can focus on the investigation, the victims and moving forward. Perhaps they even cancel the game immediately. But by letting so much hang in the air -- will Paterno go or not? will the game be played or not? -- I think that sort of split up the community into different factions.

That's why I said "near relief". Nowhere on campus are they going to get away from it, but where else than at the game are they going to constructively release their emotions? If you watched you saw plenty of people crying and over emotional both on and off the field. The kids in the stands and on the field needed this, IMO. They didn't cancel the season, so let these kids who have nothing whatsoever to do with it have a break.

I seriously wonder if the BOT had any intentions of firing JoPa until JoPa basically told them to 'pay no attention to that man behind the curtain!"

How so? Because I think a guy being an ### in front of already hurt kids is a jerk? If that's your definition of trash, then I'm fine with it. I'll have to check my notebook, but I'm pretty sure I wouldn't want to be anything other than trash in your eyes anyways. Probably makes me worth the label of human.

You disagree with him, fine...But throwing beer at him? That is wrong and you know it. You are better then this Sweeney

They didn't. Go protest in front of JP's house. The kids going to the games are completely innocent of anything remotely involved in this and they're all wounded by this. Leave them alone for a few hours.

Found it interesting that a few years back they university heads went to Paterno's house to try to get him to retire. Paterno said no.

Anyone have the details on this?

Check your notebook, trashpile, but the guy wasn't being an ###, he was trying to bring levity to people who are mourning the firing of Joe Pa instead of the numerous kids who lost their innocence and soul because of some man that Joe Pa helped hide it.

I am? I doubt I'd feel very civil towards him if I were one of those kids. I really don't see how he's any different than the WBC folks, rubbing people's noses in tragedy.

I think the reaction of many in that community, Sandusky aside, is the most offensive part of the story. The reaction of protecting PSU/Paterno is why we're here.

Are those the kids that everyone honored with an extended moment of silence? Or by the Blue-Out (instead of the originally planned white) honoring child protection? Or the shirts they sold with proceeds going to RAINN? Or the numerous signs honoring the victims? Those kids? Yeah, thank goodness that guy was there to remind them or they might've forgotten about the victims.Notebook updated: card trader's opinion worth less than what I flush every morning being as he's nothing but a blowhard who thinks he's morally superior and proves it by calling people names.

Right, so you agree with what he's saying, just think it's the wrong place, so your reaction is to throw beer at him. Not to say have a civilized discussion with him about the right place to have that kind of protest or even to just walk by him without comment.Compare that with your posts in this thread and I noticed a pattern.

I agree. Alternatively, Paterno could have stepped down at any time and saved the school from some angst.

Civil conversation is not what he's there for. As for my posts in this thread, it's all been aimed at a child rapist and his enablers. Not really sure those are fair examples to use as "people I disagree with".

Why do you find that so funny? It's increased since then, btw.
Because it IS. It's actually even funnier than when I first thought it was so funny.
Well that certainly clears it up.I happen to be pretty passionate about caring for and protecting kids who come from underprivileged backgrounds. That's why I've adopted one child out of the foster system and I'm working on number two.

What are you passionate about and what are you doing to pursue that passion?
