Jets: Management issues gag order01/23/06 03:40 PMTHE NEWSNew York Jets management has issued a stern gag order to all coaches about speaking to reporters. The squad threatened legal action against those who don't comply. The order comes in the wake of offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger being kept from interviewing for other jobs after being passed over for the Jets head coaching position – which was given to former Pats defensive coordinator Eric Mangini. Our ViewMangini's tenure isn't even a week old and already madness abounds in Jets-land. Heimerdinger would like to replace Gary Kubiak as offensive coordinator in Denver, as Kubiak will be taking over the head coaching duties in Houston. However, Heimerdinger has two years left on his contract and the Jets won't allow him to interview elsewhere. Instead, New York seems to think it will be better off with a bitter offensive coordinator that doesn't want to be there, working under a coach that was chosen over him. Good luck with that. (Fanball) :X

I wonder what the rules are about gag orders. It's not like they could take away a game's pay if he won't truly be there next year. It's nice to see Woody playing hardball. For a guy that lost Parcells, BB, and Herm he's been relatively quiet.

The gag rule is simliar to what the Patriots use, and which was originally championed by Bill Parcells. I think that Bradway basically made the case to Woody that he was the rigth long-term answer to the Jets problems. With three playoff appearances in five years, as well as the contruction of a top-10 defense three years running, Johnson accepted Bradway's case. For good or for ill (and I'm not a big Bradway fan, but I'm not calling for his head either), Bradway is positioned to be the face of the team and the true head of football operations. The Heimerdinger situation is a bit confusing. The way the Jets see it, I think, is that there's no reason to allow 'Dinger to make a lateral move. He was brought in to reimagine the Jets offense, and has only had one year to do the job, and that year was a wash, given all the injuries on the O-line, to the QB, and to the RBs. I think what the Jets are saying is that they still believe that Heimerdinger is the right man for the job (a feeling strengthened by the fact that Shanny wants him in Denver to replace Kubiak) and that his personal displeasure at not having gotten the head coaching gig should not prevent him from working for the Jets. More accurately, if he's so dissatisfied about working for the Jets, let him tender a resignation and work out a buy-out with the team (or sit for two years). It sounds to me like Dinger is unhappy enough to go take a job elsewhere if it doesn't cost him anything, but not so unhappy that he'd actually pay to get out of the contract that he signed. If the Jets were allowed to get compensation for Dinger, perhaps things would look different, but they can't, so why let him walk just b/c he's sour about not getting picked as HC?

If 'dinger wanted to replace Kubs, he should have taken a lesser role w/ the Broncos last year, instead of signing w/ the Jets. I can understand the Jets not allowing him a horizontal move (OC TO OC). I, personally, would fire him. That's a festering cancer for the team. But, maybe the move to Denver was discussed w/ Bradway in the interview? Or maybe what happens if Herm leaves. I do think the gag order is extreme, but at the same time it is a business, and he is under contract. My gut tells me they want him to quit, but he wont quit because he would have to forfeit the money, AND sit out two years from coaching, unless he gets a HC gig. The Jets are a mess in the front office. I feel sorry for Mangini. He's almost in a position that's destined to fail. Not because of what he can or can't do with players, but because of the dysfunctional front office. Not to self. Don't ever take a HC job from a GM that trades a #1 pick for Doug Jolley!!!!

I think what the Jets are saying is "FIne, you can go Dinger - Just leave that pile of Money right here"...

From what I understand, Dinger wants the Denver job AND the Jets $$$$$

They are working on a deal now :

HEIMERDINGER, JETS NEGOTIATING. Jets offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger remained in limbo yesterday, one day after a job opened for him in Denver. It is believed that the Jets and Heimderinger's agent are negotiating a settlement on the remaining two years of his contract

The agent for Jets offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger is trying to work out an escape clause for his client. If Heimerdinger, a former Denver receivers coach, is released from New York, he'd likely be a strong candidate to replace Kubiak

That's the reason - if the Jets let him go and he takes the same job in Denver for less money, the Jets have to make up the difference. They should just reassign him and say - no soup for you.-QG

I think Dinger wanted a HC job, and left Tennessee for NY b/c he wanted to the opportunity to work in a high-profile situation with a playoff team and a rising star of a HC. If the Jets had built on their success fromt he previous season, Dinger would have been a hot HC candidate. Instead, the Jets fell apart, and Dinger will now be stuck behind closed doors and behind a rookie HC.That said, who do you think the Jets will look to hire at OC and DC now?

I believe they Hired Bob Sutton their LB coach for DC.And Chris Palmer sounds like the leading OC candidate.

Westoff stays for ST.
