Lost my job today :( (1 Viewer)

Start by taking a nap IMO
I need one, I just took the last week off of work to install a new floor in my foyer, kitchen, hall and busted my ### all week.

I got called on Thursday to call into a mandatory meeting for everyone and found out they would be telling us today. I could have waited and saved a week of vacation pay.

Thanks for the kind words so far everyone.

Yes, I get a decent severance package (I think)

I will have about a week's worth of job transition to do, after that I won't need to work, but will still be getting paid as an employee until Jan 31.

I will then get my saved vacation and vacation from next year (9 weeks total) paid. I also get 25 weeks pay in severance and the amount in my cash balance retirement account (about 50K).

I also get 6 months of outplacement services with lhh.
damn bro, id be partying if i were you right now.
Yeah, I'm sure this will look better in the coming weeks/months. I'm not one to switch from job to job that often as you can see. What I'll really miss is the 5 weeks of vacation I was getting. Not sure what I can get to start somewhere else.
you should be able to negotiate something similar if 5 weeks is standard for your position. you may have to go backwards a bit on that but different companies do it differently.hopefully you can pick something up a couple months in and get paid while your severence is active which would be huge.

That's a killer package.
Agreed. Though 25 years of service deserves that type of package. Start the job hunt now. You'll get the best of both worlds, - potentially a better paying job now while still getting paid from your old employer. That being said, I know it sucks. I've had it happen to me once, and I was numb in the airport. Sucks to tell the wife, etc. It took me a few days, but then I turned the numbness into determination about getting the best next gig. Good luck.

Sorry to hear the bad news. I was laid off 3× between 2008 & 2012. It was never due to performance, the economy just sucked.

Once your self pity parade is over I highly suggest mentally preparing for the worst case scenario. Stay positive, but be realistic.

Don't be surprised when you do everything in your power to perfect your resume, shoot it out to 50-100 places & barely get a few auto generated responses about keeping your resume on file.

Good luck. I'm sure we will be seeing more of you in this place.

If I am reading this correctly you will be getting paid until the end of September next year? Jan 31 plus 34 weeks of paid leave?

Jesus ####### christ if so

Terrible situation to lose your job, but this is one helluva severance package. With your background, you'll surely find a fantastic situation soon. Best of luck and best wishes!

Not sure about your industry per se, but someone of your experience should probably start off with 4 weeks. It's not unheard of, so a bit of a haircut for you but not that bad.

Sorry to hear Ric. I had the same thing happen a year ago. Tough when its a good company, you like what you do and the people around you. Are you expecting to move?

I was going to say sorry, but seems more like congrats. Sounds like you are in awesome financial shape and practically no debt. And a big package. If I were you I'd kick back, take some inventory in life, and then reassess next moves. If I lost my job is be screwed; sounds like you were as prepared for this as anyone could be.

Good luck in your next adventure wherever that may be.

I work for a large IT consulting/recruiting company, feel free to IM me and I would be happy to help you out with your resume if needed. Additionally, I would be happy to chat with you about your upcoming job search and could put you in touch with a recruiter located in our closest office to you.

Agreed, sole income, 3 kids and you'll have your house paid off in 3 years? bravo.

Yeah, my wife has been a SAHM for 12 years and started working part time last year. So as the provider for my family it's hitting me hard to not have a job.

Thanks again for the kind words, you're all making me feel a little better.
Remember the moops's post about being paid until next September when you're feeling this way. YOU ARE PROVIDING FOR YOUR FAMILY. In a major way. Sucks to lose a job you like but you have a great opportunity here. You have put yourself in great position to keep succeeding. Congratulations and enjoy the break. :)

  He's gonna ruin rick's vacation with this job-seeking help, but still a solid move.

Thank you. I'll get back to you in the next couple of weeks once I get things settled.

Just wanted to say thank you all for the helpful responses. You've made me fell a lot better about my situation. My family and friends have been great with the support as well. Hope to be posting in this thread in the next couple of months about my next opportunity. For now, I'm going to start preparing a few things next week (resume etc).

I just finished up laying down my new kitchen floor today, I'll be finishing up the moulding/etc in the next couple of weeks and getting some odd jobs done around the house as well. Going camping with my 2 boys this weekend with their scout troop and I'll have some time away from home and hopefully can relax.

Thanks again.

yeah, i would start being aggresive now. But with the understanding that few companies will likely be hiring before the end of the year....but your goal should be the first on their minds at the beginning of 2015

Well, Just wanted to let you all know, I accepted a job offer today and will start after the new year.

It's for a smaller growing company, a little more salary and better benefits. Got 3 and a half weeks of vacation and 10 holidays which is less than the 5 I was getting but I can live with that.

I'll be able to bank all my Vacation and roll over my severance to an IRA.

Best Christmas gift I've ever received.

Thanks again for all the support from everyone.

You still receive that whole severance package and now you have this job, I assume near similar pay, right? You won the lottery as long as this new one works out to half of what your last company was able to do. You didn't say, but I assume in the Rochester area as well... no moving or anything like that.

Yup, whole severance, new pay a little higher. Still in Rochester, this job is on the pther side of town, so 30-40 minute drive each way instead of 15-20, I can live with it.

Thanks

With the coin you banked you could buy a second home next door to the new gig. Congrats on the huge score!

I'll never understand the stupidity of corporate America. As a side note, it would be great to hear the name of the company you left. Unless it's a dying company or you were a total boat anchor, they'll never come out ahead whacking you. Odds are they'll hire someone to replace within a 2-5 years. They'll may pay a recruiter to do it. They lose your experience and reliability. Until they replace you they'll generate less product/service to make profit.

Congrats! What a great Christmas present - had to take a huge load off man. Best Christmas ever!
